March
March | Geraldine Brooks
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize--a powerful love story set against the backdrop of the Civil War, from the author of The Secret Chord, coming from Viking in October 2015 From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs. A lushly written, wholly original tale steeped in the details of another time, March secures Geraldine Brooks's place as a renowned author of historical fiction. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Started in March. Continued in April. Bailed in May. I have loved other books by this author, but March is too dour and dry.

OTOH I bailed on Thursday Murder Club and will also bail on this follow-up. I‘ll still go to book club, though, because it‘s the last meeting until September.

I finished the Pandian and read a bit of Emma, so I‘ve been reading The Lola Quartet and liking it so far.

I‘m pretty happy with my March reading. I finished 20 books& accomplished most of what I hoped to do. I finished all 3 #Roll100 books, my buddy reads for #ChloeGongReadAlong #JaneAdjacent #NancyDrewBR #ChildrensClassicRead2024 #SheSaid #Naturalitsy #SeasonalCozies #TravelingStars & my virtual foodie book club & worked in an AuldLangSpine title (trying to do one per month). Finished out 2 series & started a new one #SeriesLove2024 & took part in ⬇️

DebinHawaii …the #MarveloysMarch #readathon. I did not read my selected #FoodandLit title & did a #DNF after 135 pages of The Golden Notebook for #SundayBuddyRead so not perfect but pretty darn good overall! I liked everything I read (except my DNF) but my favorites included Foul Heart Huntsman, My Monticello, both books in The Naturals series, What Feasts at Night Lone Women & Make Trouble. (edited) 7mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie I still feel a little bad for DNFing The Golden Notebook but it did enable me to focus on a few more books I wanted to read! 😆 7mo

My March TBR is aggressive & as usual, I‘m not planning to get to all of it. I‘m still unsure on this month‘s #SundayBuddyRead The Golden Notebook as I‘m only through the intro & not loving it but I‘m going to try for more this weekend. Little Women told mostly through the eyes of Mr. March. A friend recommended this knowing Little Women is a favorite, not knowing that I really can‘t stand Mr March. BUT this book did such a great job of explaining why he was such a pompous know it all without making him sympathetic. I loved it. Warning this book largely takes place in the south during the Civil War so it‘s not a gentle book.

JenDR Read this book earlier in the year. Enjoyed it mostly because it was Little Women adjacent. Didn‘t really reimagine the original. I find it funny that out of all those writers during that time period in that area - Louisa May Alcott‘s Little book for girls has become the worldwide iconic classic. 11mo

My latest book for coffee shop time. I liked Little Women as a child. I am intrigued about what Brooks does with a character who was mostly off page.

thea-block I enjoyed the concept of this one maybe more than the execution. I don‘t know if you ever read the Little House on the Prairie books, but if you did, I REALLY enjoyed the tagged book from the mother‘s perspective. Made things feel much more real! (edited) 1y
JenDR I‘ve heard of Caroline - so far very mixed reviews from readers I usually match vibes with. For March - I am enjoying the parts of him at war more than the flashbacks of his life with his family. 1y

I‘m not sure what to do about this…as far as historical fiction, it is well-researched. It‘s a decent read, if dry. I don‘t hold Little Women as dearly in my heart like many do, so that‘s not my issue either. I won‘t count this author out, I just think this one didn‘t resonate with me. Pictured: A. “Little Women” is one of my favorite books of all time - Jo March was the first, and forever, character in whom I saw myself, even as a little kid - and so this is kind of interesting. Not as utterly amazing as the people who recommended it to me made it sound, but it‘s good so far. #march #geraldinebrooks #littlewomen #themarchfamily #civilwar #abolitionism #slavery #racism #reimaginedliterature

Having visited the Alcott residence of Orchard House in Concord, MA in 2019 and learning about Louisa May Alcott‘s father Bronson, I enjoyed this historical fiction account of Mr. March‘s Civil War journey. Mr. March shares many of Bronson Alcott‘s characteristics and I felt that Brooks did a nice job of weaving his story into the back drop of such a beloved work as Little Women which was not an easy task.

After March enlists in the Civil War he says, “one day I hope to go back to my wife, but also to the man of moral certainty that I was. That innocent man, who knew with such clear confidence exactly what it was that he was meant to do.” The author ponders, “I don‘t think he can go back. Nor do I think it desirable. Moral certainty can deafen people to any truths other than their own. By the end of the book, March sees the cost of his ideals.”

Having recently finished reading Little Women, I thought this would be a nice follow-up, a fictional account of Mr. March, who gets relatively little attention in Alcott‘s novel. I‘ve also really enjoyed other books by Geraldine Brooks. But this one missed the mark for me. I found that the story dragged and that Mr. March‘s character didn‘t really match up with the man Alcott alluded to in LW. Just a so-so for me.

Geraldine Brooks‘ Pulitzer Prize-winning March follows the absent patriarch of Louisa May Alcott‘s Little Women in his service as chaplain during the Civil War. While I appreciate Brooks‘ detailed historical contextualization and the point she makes about moral rigidity, I felt March lacked the warmth and beauty required to be persuasive as a counterpoint to its source of inspiration.

KarmonR I enjoyed March when I read it. I became a Brooks fan because of this book. I am not a big fan of Little Women, so that may be a factor in the way I approached the book. What about you? LW fan? 5y
underground_bks @KarmonR definitely a Little Women fan, but I just felt like March was a cold book, maybe a little too literary and not enough beauty for me. 5y
KarmonR I can understand that. Mr March was not particularly likable , if I remember correctly. He didn‘t seem to fit with the women of the March family. 5y
underground_bks @KarmonR I also might be a little too invested in LW. But I just feel like the criticism of LW‘s moral rigidity in March is so blunt. I can‘t help it—I love the earnestness of LW and was missing it here. 5y

Outstanding work of historical fiction that imagines what Mr. March — Marmee‘s husband & father to the “Little Women” — did during the civil war. Brooks provides incredible historical detail and a story of personal relationships between March, Marmee and slave named Grace. Won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006. I love Brooks‘ novels. They are so well researched and written. https://cannonballread.com/2019/09/march-elcicco/
