Buddenbrooks - The Original Classic Edition
Buddenbrooks - The Original Classic Edition | Thomas Mann
Buddenbrooks was Thomas Manns first novel, published in 1901 when he was twenty-six years old. The publication of the 2nd edition in 1903 confirmed that Buddenbrooks was a major literary success in Germany. It portrays the downfall (already announced in the subtitle, Decline of a Family) of a wealthy mercantile family of Lubeck over four generations. The book is generally understood as a portrait of the German bourgeois society throughout several decades of the 19th century. The book displays Manns characteristic detailed style, and it was this novel which won Mann the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, although according to Manns wife this achievement would not have occurred without the publication of The Magic Mountain. Manns objective was to write a novel on the conflicts between businessman and artists worlds, presented as a family saga, continuing in the realist tradition of 19th century works such as Stendhals Le Rouge et le noir (1830; The Red and the Black). More personally, he wanted to surpass the literary status already achieved by his eldest brother Heinrich Mann, who met relative success with the novel In einer Familie (1894, In a Family), and who was working at that time on another novel about German bourgeois society, Im Schlaraffenland (1900, In the Land of Cockaigne). It can be said that both of Thomas Manns objectives were satisfied. The novel stands today as one of his most popular, especially in Germany, and is considered by many to be the novel that best captures the 19th century German bourgeois atmosphere. The exploration of decadence in the novel can be attributed to the profound influence of Arthur Schopenhauer on Thomas Mann during his youth. The three generations of the family depicted in the book experience a continuous economical, physical, and spiritual decline, with true happiness becoming increasingly unavailable to all the members of the family. The characters who sacrifice their lives for the sake of the family firm meet unfortunate ends, just as those who do not. The city where the Buddenbrook family lives shares so many of its street names and other details with Manns hometown of Lubeck that the identification is perfect, although Mann carefully avoids explicit pronunciation of the name throughout the whole novel. In spite of this fact, many German readers and critics attacked Mann for writing about the dirty laundry of his hometown and his own family. However, although this may be debated, it must be said that the fate of the Buddenbrooks bears no direct resemblance with the authors own family, nor with that of the 19th century German bourgeoisie in general, not even with the money aristocracy, although merchandizing is a central topic. The main period of time considered covers 1835 to 1877, and thus includes some of the most dramatic episodes of 19th-century German history: the Revolutions of 1848, the Austro-Prussian War, the North German Confederation, and the establishment of the German Empire). However, in agreement with the above-mentioned remarks, these events play only a peripheral role and thus in this sense Buddenbrooks is also not a historical novel.

4⭐️ Reading this novel feels like watching Taiwanese family drama series 🤪 I love how Mann jumps from one incident to another, making me alert with much anticipation. Short chapters with total of 11 parts, this chunkster doesn‘t feel like a chunkster at all. It‘s super readable and I enjoyed it so much.

EvieBee Kudos on your accomplishment! Also, beautiful pic. 3y

There were aspects of this story that I truly enjoyed, but there were also parts that just seemed to drag on. I seldom felt truly invested in the characters even as I was hearing their entire life stories.

The Stakhanovite Thomas, who lives his whole life to carry on family heritage. The fragile Christian, who is constantly searching for a different path. The frivolous Antonie, who demonstrates great resilience in the face of life trials. Johann, the only feeble hope for the family's future, he slowly fades away, marking the end of the Buddenbrooks.
For sure not an easy reading (especially for its length!), but definitely recommended. :)

This was a really interesting story. It spans decades in the history of a once prominent family in Luebeck, Germany. There were many times when I felt great sympathy for the characters, and other times that really brought what a different time this was, and how high their social class was. There's a part when one character is horribly offended that a working class man would dare to say “Hello,“ to her that really brought that home to me.

Nothing in this book should be surprising, and still I was surprised. It‘s a feat! After forty years and 730 pages, you feel you really know the family, and so the decline is devastating. Still, there is plenty of humor and insight to be found, as well as questions. Most troubling: What caused the decline? Was it inevitable or did the choices of the offspring gradually doom them?

I‘m blown away by this book... I was definitely not expecting to like it as much as I did. It‘s long, it‘s sad and depressing, but it‘s so very well-written and very readable. Considering it‘s translated from the German, that‘s really impressive. A family saga with some interesting characters. Hard to believe Mann was only 26 when this classic was published.

Thanks for sharing, Deborah! I enjoyed being part of Group F.

Well that was a humdinger...of sorts. I‘m inclined to be choosy about who I would recommend this book to, but I would love to discuss it with anyone who has read it. I was enjoying the writing a great deal but I am not much of a family drama person. But this book is much more than that, it just takes its time getting there. I wish I could read German.

I'm glad I read it. I would think I knew what the author wanted to portray, but would be caught off guard. Mann added characters, but they wouldn't add to the plot line. I'm more confused about his purpose to writing it now than before I started. If you are interested in how a prestigious family lived in 19th century Germany, this is for you. On to you, @jmofo. @arubabookwoman, thank you for introducing me to Mann. @sprainedbrain happy New Year.

Mann's first novel is impressive; a family saga stretching through the latter half of the ninetheenth century and over several generations following the slowly decline of the family facing the advent of modernity. Mann pulls us in a world of stunning vitality, pieced together from births and funerals, weddings and divorces, recipes, gossip and humor. Fits the #FamilyAffair for day 10 #AugustGrrrl perfectly:)

The Buddenbrooks is one of the upperclass families in 19th century Germany. Four generations, one family firm, all in the hands of the eldest son. Everyone obeys the rules of how a well-to-do family should behave. But time goes by and we witness the slow decline of the family traditions. Mann gives us an intimate portrait of their lives, so much that it sometimes made me feel uneasy and feel very sorry for their losses and sorrows. #1001books

My current long read is the Buddenbrooks. I've just watched a clip from the 1979 TV series on YouTube and discovered that I bought the exact same china at the church jumble sale last year as the Buddenbrook family uses for breakfast 😀☕️ it's not brilliant china, but it was cheap. I don't have the big tea / coffee pot, just cups and saucers and the sugar bowl in the shot.

"Wir finden in den Büchern immer nur uns selbst. Komisch, dass dann allemal die Freude groß ist und wir den Autor zum Genie erklären."

Pickpick

"The Decline of a Family." Covering four generations of a German merchant family, Buddenbrooks portrays the ups and downs of family life in the 19th century and is a compelling read. Every character and action is realistically portrayed and Mann's writing is clear. With humour, drama, romance, loss, and strong family values, this book draws in a wide audience. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone's list of classics!
