Million Little Pieces
Million Little Pieces | James Frey
At the age of 23, James Frey woke up on a plane to find his front teeth knocked out and his nose broken. He had no idea where the plane was headed nor any recollection of the past two weeks. An alcoholic for ten years and a crack addict for three, he checked into a treatment facility shortly after landing. There he was told he could either stop using or die before he reached age 24. This is Frey's acclaimed account of his six weeks in rehab.

The fake memoir that pissed off Oprah Winfrey. 😱

lil1inblue I had totally forgotten all about this controversy! 😨 3mo

vivastory I haven't read the book, but what stuck with me from interviews at the time was him saying that nobody would pick it up as a novel. I find that really interesting. 3mo

Eggs I liked this book; read it fairly recently. Hardly ever watched Oprah. 3mo
Lesliereadsalot Loved this book when it came out and the sequel too. 3mo
dabbe @vivastory I do, too. I'm a much bigger lover of fiction than I am of nonfiction (though I love NF, too). 3mo
dabbe @Eggs Would you categorize it as a memoir? Quite a bit of it was embellished or not true. It makes me wonder where the line is between fiction/nonfiction ... a similar discussion occurred when I posted IN COLD BLOOD as #basedontruestory 3mo
Kitta Like @Eggs and @Lesliereadsalot I loved this, I found the sequel not as good but still entertaining. I was in a phase at the time of reading memoirs about disasters and drug addiction lol although I would have read it if it had been marketed as fiction or based on a true story. I feel like lying and marketing it as NF ruined his credibility though, he shouldn‘t have lied. It should have been fiction. 3mo
Lesliereadsalot @Kitta yes it definitely should‘ve been fiction but it wouldn‘t have slammed me the way it did as non fiction. Totally understand why Oprah was devastated to learn she‘d been lied to. I was shocked but even now I remember how the book made me feel when I read it, even knowing now that it was a lie. 3mo
Eggs @dabbe No on memoir…more like historical fiction. I haven‘t researched him, but if he was a tragic addict and embellished his experience , seems still like F. HF writers add/edit history all the time. 3mo
dabbe @Eggs @Kitta @Lesliereadsalot Labeling it as HF seems the best way to have gone, but one wouldn't have been as gobsmacked as you said, @Lesliereadsalot. I haven't heard much from him since, so I think this whole episode definitely had a negative impact on his career. 3mo

marleed I read this book when it first came out and shortly before the Oprah interview. I was gutted when it was revealed the book was not pure fact. …But on reflection, I thought the author got a bad wrap. He was unknown. He was just writing. It was editors and publishers that decided to market it as a memoir. And he never could have dreamed the Oprah bookclub pick. So I go back to my initial impact when reading the book itself. 3y

Edit - Bailed! I‘m starting this today. I have a cart filled with books, and always have trouble picking what to read next. So I came up with an idea of having my youngest son, 9 years old, pick a book for me. This is the third one he has picked for me. The first one was Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill, the second was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I loved both! So I‘m hoping this one will be good too. I‘ve read mixed reviews on this one. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Found another book on my "books I forgot/didn't know I had" bookshelf that sounds really interesting. Gonna try to start it this weekend. Drug addiction runs all through my family, unfortunately. My brother struggles very badly with it and he just recently had a very bad seizure caused from his using and his heart had stopped, thankfully they were able to resuscitate him. So I'm sure this book will hit me hard..

Amor4Libros I didn‘t know this was being made into a movie, looks good! I remember when Oprah praised this book so much that a friend and I read it and were blown away. I read it again a few years ago, it‘s that good. I‘ll definetely watch the movie 5y

marleed I read this book just prior to the interview and was deeply impacted. Then the interview, then the controversy. It‘s seems so odd now that I was so saddened by the aftermath . It has changed how I read memoirs. In his defense, when he wrote the book he didn‘t set out to call it a memoir nor could he anticipate it would get that attention. Even still, I read differently. 5y
DivineDiana @marleed I too read it before the controversy. Unsettling. 🙁 5y
marleed @DivineDiana I took the controversy so personally which seems so silly now. Upon reflection, much much later, I feel sorry for the author because he was caught up in a publishing world he was no way prepared for. Actually, the aftermath might make a great movie! 5y

As a novel this book is very well written, however, it's marketed as a true story for some reason??? Weird. I figured it out relatively quickly that there was no way this book was 100% accurate. But I enjoyed the story and writing style, if nothing else, the book has emotion.

(Day 16 - #Rehab)

*I cannot hear that word, rehab, without thinking of poor James Frey, author of the tagged book (purportedly a memoir, however the “facts” didn‘t quite add up), who was very nearly knighted by Oprah. But that was before she found the book to be a pack of ... well, semi-truths? Or semi-lies? Anyway, Frey was then publicly and shamefully dumped from her book club.

Cinfhen Ha!!! #GreatMindsThinkAlike check out my post for this prompt 😂💕 6y

#AnglophileApril From my TBR...James Frey caused quite a literary uproar when he released his “memoir” about time spent in #rehab only to be called out by internet snoops as a fraud. Nobody was angrier than Ms. O who had endorsed his memoir and chosen it for her bookclub. I think it‘s a fine line labeling something from memory as NF or fiction. Although in Frey‘s case I believe he flat out lied about key story points. *images from Google *

LeahBergen Ohhhh, DAMN! I remember that interview so well. 😆😆 6y

FashionableObserver Why didn‘t that fool call it “creative nonfiction” or something? It takes some balls to try to scam Auntie Oprah. Scamming the rest of the world...maybe. Ms. Winfrey?! I. Would. Never! 🤣 6y
Megabooks I think this was the beginning of the end for Oprah‘s book club. At least in that iteration. 6y
Cinfhen Agreed!!!!! @FashionableObserver #CreativeNF sounds so much better than #BigFatLiar 😜 I think the public rallied behind O after she publicly shamed and kicked James Frey out of her bookclub @Megabooks This was a HUGE story in the states @TrishB but it was during our #MommyYears 🤪 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen wasn‘t it like a year or two (if that) later that she stopped choosing new books and started choosing classics?? Then the show ended and contemporary picks started again in the magazine? 6y
Cinfhen That could be @Megabooks Hows the foot feeling? 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just looked on Wikipedia, and she did start picking more classics than usual after 2005, but not exclusively. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oprah%27s_Book_Club Thanks for asking about my foot. 😊🥰 It‘s feeling better now that I‘m in bed, but I had a busy day yesterday, which was rough. Nothing like kicking back with a good book for the body and soul!! 💕💕 6y
tournevis I found this whole affair quite boggling at the time. In French (mostly but not only in France proper), there's a whole genre called auto-fiction which is basically what this guy did. It's you, but events are changed, invented. It's not about facts. I always thought the problem was the book was wrongly marketed and he fuelled that. I remember a critique on Radio-Canada asking why people were confused about the fictional bits, as if self-evident. 6y
Cinfhen I find most memoirs are probably ״exaggerated״ to some degree but I guess it‘s because he presented the entire story as factual @tournevis when he outright embellished and denied. Supposedly he claimed he spent 87 days in prison when in fact it was 8 hours. 6y
tournevis @Cinfhen I know, I get that. It's precisely auto-fiction. The English-language book business needs to adopt that genre too. 6y
Mdargusch Boy this sure brought up some controversy! Poor Oprah. 😂 6y
Cinfhen I agree @tournevis it‘s a good term 6y
Reviewsbylola I always think this is so interesting. I wasn‘t invested in this book personally so I didn‘t have a reaction about the fabrication. But if the allegations about Augustan Burroughs fabricating Scissors is true (which I don‘t believe they are), that would be disappointing. 6y
Reviewsbylola But yes, I agree most memoirs are likely exaggerated to some degree. 6y
gradcat Omigosh! You‘ve storyboarded it! Ha ha, I love this! 👍❤️🥰 6y
Cinfhen I HATED like REALLY REALLY HATED that memoir @Reviewsbylola and I‘m 99% sure it‘s BS!!! 6y
Cinfhen There are very dysfunctional families BUT that shit was another whole level @Reviewsbylola 6y
Cinfhen I think memoirs in general are very tricky @gradcat @Samplergal and that‘s why im a little skeptical about 6y
Megabooks I am skeptical about Educated as well!! I do not see how that could all be true!!! 6y
gradcat I pretty much take everything I read which purports to be true with...well, may be not so much skepticism as to say a grain of salt...but let‘s say I‘ve learned that the printed word is sacred no more, so to speak.... 6y
mrp27 I remember this well, I was managing a bookstore at the time and the nasty customer returns are still fresh in my mind. As if I was personally responsible for the fiasco. Anyway, #unpopularopinion I blame Oprah. She should have vetted her pick better. Frey was wrong to lie but with her resources it should never have happened. P.S. I've never read the book. 😬 6y
Cinfhen Oh wow @mrp27 I‘m sure people were really nasty🙄 of course Oprah blamed the publisher but I agree, there were plenty of people who could have verified information throughout this process. It wasn‘t until 2 years later when Oprah selected the book that it even began to gain such popularity. 6y
Cinfhen @CarolynM recently wrote a great review about Educated @Megabooks 6y
mrp27 I've ready many a Oprah book pick and have loved/hated many of them. I think what she's done for reading is awesome but oh boy did I hate dealing with her book picks on a bookstore/bookseller level! Fun times. 😝 6y
emilyhaldi This was sketch AF 6y
marleed Oh my gosh I remember this well. I had finished the book just days before the interview and somehow took the controversy personally which I know now was just silly. I now read any memoir as auto-fiction. As I read Educated and the Glass Castle my eyeglasses were James Frey tinted. 6y
Cinfhen I like your new approach!!! I found Educated too much to accept as fact but for some reason Glass Castle seemed authentic as crazy as it was!!! Auto fiction is a good term though and should be used more often. @marleed 6y
marleed Maybe we can market James Frey tinted glasses to B&N ;) 6y

After I read Lush by Kerry Cohen, a friend suggested I dig into this story of addiction next. Lots of controversy around whether it‘s accurate. Some parts are completely fabricated. But with an addict going through the throes of withdrawal and recovery, it‘s probably difficult to see things clearly and recount them either way. My mom is a psychiatric social worker, so she‘s been in these scenarios of violence, abuse and confusion. A happy sorry.

Victoriahoperose I personally feel like the problem with this is that Frey took a lot of creative license when he wrote about his struggle with addiction. Non fiction is about perspective and still writing something that people will read. What I come back to with this is how many people were inspired by this book and found peace and help from reading it. I have a ton of opinions on this one, but I honestly believe that Frey‘s story is worthwhile. 6y
Annl I tore through the book, but felt a little cheated. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Just keep on mind that it was said to be non fiction, but turned out to be mostly fiction. It was big scandal even Oprah called him out on her show, cuz he essentially lied to her face. I agree with @Annl ☝️ ate it up, then felt cheated. 6y
BookaholicNatty @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @AmyG I will have to see if I can look that clip up online of Oprah and him (edited) 6y
BBooks I couldn‘t finish it, I bailed with only a few chapters left. And I went in knowing it was fiction as it was well after the Oprah debacle. I could not believe anybody took it as non-fiction. However, there‘s one thing that addicts do and that‘s LIE, so there‘s that. In the end, for me it was nails on a chalkboard and I just had to bail 6y
cathysaid I enjoyed it. I suspect some others do the same and don't get caught. By no means am I excusing the misrepresentation but viewing it from pure entertainment value, it fits the bill. 6y

I did struggle through this book a little. The writing style was hard for me to get used to and it was really dark, as I am sure addiction truly is, but there were some parts so slow and vulgar I almost wanted to skip ahead. I think a lot of that is due to a blunt description of someone struggling with addiction, but still hard to read nonetheless. I did appreciate his honesty even if I didn‘t always agree with his opinions or conclusions.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I liked this book until I found out that the author lied about it being a memoir. 7y

I enjoyed this NOVEL. I read it 1000 years ago before it was an Oprah Pick and his whole lying scandal came out. I think it is a great work of FICTION, a marvelous tale of redemption. My only objection to this book is that it does not realistically portray what it is really like to recover from an addiction using the 12 steps. It is much more intense and serious than Frey depicts. | This book is currently on the free shelf in my laundry room.

I'm sure it holds relatable truths to someone's life. I enjoyed it. It had some grotesque parts that were hard for me to get thru , but ...WHAT. A. STORY. Hope you "enjoyed" it. 8y
Erika13137 @Claudia9498 I haven't finished it yet but that Dentist part was BRUTAL! Other than that it's an interesting read. The format took awhile to get used too. 8y
Claudia9498 @Erika13137 Yes!.. I cringed!... You're right the format took me awhile to get used to as well. I've never read anything written that way before. But once you get used to it, it's all good. 8y

Sometimes skulls are thick. Sometimes hearts are vacant. Sometimes words don't work.

Mariposa_Bookworm I must say that despite all the controversy that surrounded the book, I enjoyed this one. It was really really good. I have have the sequel, My Friend, Leonard, somewhere buried on my shelves. 8y
Marie_KN The sequel is also very good! 8y

There is no fear. Absolutely no fear. When one lives without fear, one cannot be broken. When one lives with fear one is broken before one begins to live.

DivineDiana Like the quote but I still remember all the controversy over this book. He lied to Oprah! 8y
Thessalia @DivineDiana I was working at Borders during the hay day and then backlash of this book. I have never been able to read this book as a result of both. 8y
DivineDiana @Thessalia I read it when Oprah chose it for her Book Club. If I hadn't read it at that time, I would have done the same. 8y

HiddenGemBooks @DivineDiana @Thessalia that's why I just posted this one quote. He has some little literature gems throughout the book, but I don't support it as a whole, if that makes sense..😐 8y
DivineDiana @cookiejanester And it's a good one! Not to mention a gorgeous photo as well! 8y
HiddenGemBooks @DivineDiana true! Thanks so much 😊 8y

Apologies! I'm a bit late with my #day9 photo of the #augustphotochallenge. I wasn't close to my books yesterday and I really wanted to rather submit a photo. So this is SOME of my all-time favourite books. It's really quite difficult to choose just a few but after sitting in front of my shelves for a while I decided that this is a pretty good mix.

LauraBeth Despite the controversy - I still ❤️ A Million Little Pieces 8y
elkeOriginal Golem and the Djinni has been on my TBR for ages! 8y
Laalaleighh @elkeo same! I can see it sitting on my shelf from here!! 8y

Jellybeanbon @LauraBeth I agree with you. I read the whole book in one sitting and it has stuck with me. I didn't enjoy the sequel though. 8y
Jellybeanbon @elkeo @Laalaleighh you have to read Golem and Djinni. It's probably my favourite book of the last 5 years. 8y
Laalaleighh @Jellybeanbon I will move it up my TBR!!! 8y

July is a wrap and I finished out with 10 books. Nothing stood out as spectacular this month. Most were good- average. Many were continuations of series I started last month, so I'm happy to have some closure to those.

Karen3 What book journal is this? I have been searching for something like this. 8y
Livelovebark @Karen3 it's a personal size planner insert download from Etsty. I scrolled through my purchases to find the shop and it seems to have disappeared 🤔 8y
Karen3 Oh bummer. I will keep searching. 8y
DivineDiana Reading champ! 8y

UGH I know I was kind of raving about this book yesterday but after reading on a bit, it went downhill pretty quick. Maybe it's just me but I felt it became repetitive and the writing style really started to grind on me. Maybe try reading it again some other day, but for right now, I'm leaving it.

CaitlinSiem We studied this book in a writing class in college. He wrote it as NF and Oprah raved about how wonderful it was, then he came out stating it was actually fiction. Quite the scene was made about it. I didn't care for it personally either. 8y
DivineDiana @CaitlinSiem His dishonesty changed my opinion of the book. 8y
