⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Read this one in the recommendation of a friend. I've got mixed feelings about it. Overall it's a nice and easy read and there is enough there to keep you intrigued. But, I do however feel like some bits were a bit too on the nose, especially with the heartsoothers values. Can't say I saw the ending coming so that was a pleasant surprise.

Squeezed this one in ahead of my other books after watching the Netflix series. I don't often read romance novels, but I loved this one - despite knowing exactly what happens. The series is brilliant but as always the book is even better.
✅ loved the storytelling from both sides
✅ Emma's character is hilarious and so relatable
✅ so many great 90s references and memories
👎 I guarantee you'll cry at some stage

Slimani definitely has a way with words
Adéle has such a different tone when compared to Lullaby (written by the same author) but once again she manages to make it impossible to put the book down or to predict what the extremely unlikeable protoganist will do next

After not being able to put Lullaby down by the same author, I decided to try Adele. So far, absolutely intrigued. Slimani seems to capture so well the complexities of the motherhood.

Eeeeck! Finished this book in record time (for me lately). I couldn't put it down or stop thinking about it 🫣. I loved the writing style and story. Some might find the ending off putting but I reckon it added even more to the overall creepy and anxiety inducing mood of the book.

Acting as the official host (via the Spinecrackers Book Club) for the #bookisholympics it makes it kind of difficult to make objective decisions about my own books for the competition. So, I have 9 and a half hours left of Helter Skelter. What do you guys think could it count as a novel once it's done or rather just a short story due to the fact that it's actually 26 hours and I have been listening to it for a while?

StephBengtson I was wondering about this too! Im a hundred pages in Jane Steel, but I took a break because I didn't know if I could count it. I say go for it. 8y
TheSpinecrackersBookClub @StephBengtson I'd say that counts definitely. As far as I remember Jane Steele is about 400 pages so you have 300 pages left and only need 220 for a novel 😉 look at me mathing 😋 8y
Gulfskye There are quite a few novels that are only 9 or 10 hours and they are complete novels not a short story.@i would count it as a novel. 8y

My second #uniquefact for the #augustphotochallenge is that I have been conducting research on the legal aspects of organ donations for the last 6 years and recently I was given the chance to actually witness a kidney transplant. Without a doubt the best moment in my life and it's actually got me thinking about attempting to get into medical school. It was all I wanted to do after school but due to circumstances I rather ended up in law.

bookishkai Adding to my stack; my partner is two and a half years post diagnosis of end stage renal failure, goes to dialysis three times a week, and is waiting waiting waiting for a kidney transplant. 8y
BookishFeminist So cool! I'm a law grad too 😀 organ donations is such a fascinating legal topic. Interested to hear what you've found! 8y
Jellybeanbon Thanks everyone!! 8y
Jellybeanbon @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @bookishkris It always heartbreaking to hear how long people need to wait for a donor kidney. Dialysis can be so draining for the patient and the family. This transplant that I attended was a 10 year old kiddy that was born with Renal failure and he waited all these years for a suitable donor kidney. 8y
Jellybeanbon @BookishFeminist I'm from SA so our Constitution is supreme law I based my masters thesis on the viewpoint that according to your rights in the Constitution a person should be given the option to be remunerated for a kidney donation. The majority of my research has been based on improving the acute organ shortage by incorporating a form of remuneration. Lately I have been working on the referral process in the hospitals. 8y
BookishFeminist @Jellybeanbon That's super cool! I'm not sure if remuneration for kidney donation is legal in US but I have a sneaky suspicion it's not. What an interesting perspective. Thanks for indulging my curiosity! 8y
Jellybeanbon @BookishFeminist most probably not. At this stage it's only officially legal to buy and sell kidneys in Iran. It has been since the 80s and they are the only country in the world that does not have a waiting list of kidney recipients they actually have a list of people waiting to donate (or rather sell) their kidneys. In Singapore they allow remuneration for a few specified things regarding the transplant. Israel now recently also started to.. 8y
Jellybeanbon Work with the idea of remuneration. In SA our draft regulations mentions that remuneration can be awarded but no legislation specifies who needs to provide this legislation and how much it should be. 8y

⭐️⭐️ I've been watching horror movies and reading horrors since I was a little girl so when I started reading Frankenstein I was really hoping that I would love it. However, I was left feeling a bit disappointed! To me everything felt very dramatic. The whole book is filled with endless dramatic and sad monologues either by Dr Frankenstein or the Daemon. Maybe I just don't get the classics 🤔. Either way another classic done ☑️

OSChamberlain Well she was only 20 when she published it so you can't expect a masterpiece I guess. 8y
Jellybeanbon @OSChamberlain Oh no please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying it's a bad novel it's just really not for me. It's well written and I understand that there is a deeper meaning etc I just really didn't enjoy it. It seldom happens that I count down the pages of a book I'm reading and I was doing it the whole time with this one. Maybe different time, different space I would feel differently about it. 8y
OSChamberlain @Jellybeanbon I get you. Maybe it's because you've been reading horror all your life. I mean back in its day this must've been one hell of a scary story, but with the stuff people come out with these days, I suspect it takes the scare factor out of this one a bit. I can't be sure, since I've never actually read it myself. 8y

readinginthedark Sometimes I look at my son and think I created a drama machine! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist This is one of my favorite books but I totally hear you. For me, my enjoyment of classics doesn't come from the fact that they are riveting so much but rather looking at the historical and literary context behind them and understanding why they were riveting back then. 8y
Jellybeanbon @Laura317 so relieved to hear I'm not the only one. 8y
DebinHawaii I feel the same--all 3 of the male narrators are drama queens! I read it years ago in school and forgot about that aspect! 👑📚 8y
cuiuup The only character I cared for in the book was Frankenstein's monster. Although there were some facts about him that I felt were not believable, I felt like Frankenstein was all drama and no fright. 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 It's not my favorite either. I am really not a classics lover. 😐 8y
Jellybeanbon @emilydecato I'm starting to think I'm just not a fan either. 8y
Jellybeanbon @MallloCup I agree with you and to be honest he was just really self-centered. He really just cared about how the Daemon made his life unbearable. He knew he would kill Elizabeth on their wedding night yet he still decided it's a great idea to marry her. 8y

My #favsiblings for the #augustphotochallenge is Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. I read this book about 4 years ago and absolutely devoured it. The last paragraph has always stuck with me.

Godmotherx5 I read this years ago. I barely remember it. I may need to look up that last paragraph. 8y
Jellybeanbon @Godmotherx5 I still wanted to add it but it was too long: "I am not a smart man, particularly, but one day, at long last, I stumbled from the dark woods of my own, and my family's, and my country's past, holding in my hands these truths: that love grows from the rich loam of forgiveness; that mongrels make good dogs; that the evidence of God exists in the roundness of things. This much, at least, I've figured out. I know this much is true."

QueenAnne @Jellybeanbon I agree! He comes from a decent family, has a great relationship with his family and friends, is able to travel and study.. Dude what's your problem 😆 8y
cuiuup @Jellybeanbon but the monster isn't really a monster but an intelligent being in want of love and a sense of belonging... Victor missed out on a bomb best friend! 8y

I never thought that something could excite me as much as books do. Well, I was wrong. Feeling quite inspired by the Litsy community I went on the hunt to find a comic / graphic novel store. Living in SA this is not an easy task BUT we recently moved and woohoo I found a store very close to my house! So now I need suggestions on which comics or graphic novels are good to start with? I have a feeling that this store will see me often.

Chessa My fave comics right now are Ms. Marvel, Saga, Lumberjanes, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Rat Queens, and Giant Days. I don't read individual issues usually, I wait for the trade paperback collections of 4-5 issues to come out. Other good ones: Sex Criminals, The Wicked + The Divine, Y: The Last Man. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Lumberjanes!! I was always the teenage girl who stole her little brother's comic books to read. As an over-50 person, I sometimes surprise my friends with how much I love superheroes! So many books are coming out in graphic novel form. Have fun!! 8y

Jellybeanbon @Blair_Reads some riveting stuff! He even compares the Beatles to the 4 angels written about in Revelations in the Bible. He thinks they wrote bits of I Will and Honey Pie about him. 8y
Varshitha I saw this is in the used book store last time but I had already bought so many books I didn't get it.. Will definitely get it next time.. 8y

It's #day3 of the #augustphotochallenge and today's theme is #pinkandgreenbooks. So I quickly realized I don't have much pink books. I reckon this has something to do with my lack of romance books as well. However I found this lil book which I picked up at my second hand bookstore haul sometime ago.

It's day 2 of the #augustphotochallenge and theme today is #romancenovels. I scavenged and digged and analyzed my books and this is the closest books I could find to romance. I don't even really think these 4 are romance novels but I gave it a go. Hmm...when the day comes that we have a horror themed photo then I'll be able to take a gazillion pics.

Varshitha Nice selection.. I am still analysing my books.. 8y
Maike I'd love a horror day on that challenge! 😄 8y

Starting Frankenstein tonight along with my Spinecrackers Book Club. Well, this book immediately has all my attention if one of my favourite countries is mentioned on the first page 🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺 By the way I'm reading from the free copy that can be found in the ibooks app and it works perfectly.

Varshitha I have to start as well, I have been meaning to read this .. Will check out if they have it in serial reader 8y
Trav This is a favourite of mine. Enjoy! 8y

So far this will be my TBR for August #augustphotochallenge #tbrpile

Varshitha Wow,, that's so nice.. Great selection of books!! 8y
Laura317 Looks good! I've got 2 of those on mine, too. 8y
Jellybeanbon @Laura317 which two do you have? 8y
See All 13 Comments
Sue I'm too much of a coward to lists actual TBR because a) I will feel obliged to stick to it and b) then feel really bad when I don't. I am all impulse and no discipline when it comes to book selection!! (Great looking stack though!) 8y
Laura317 Feankenstine and Jane Steele. @Jellybeanbon I am waffling on Frankenstine though, since I've read it before. First month with @TheSpinecrackersBookClub for me. 8y
pppooraikul Nice drawing! And also nice selection. I'm with you with 8y
[DELETED] 3558467437 Great drawing! 8y
LitHousewife I love your drawing! 8y
Karen3 Love the drawing and I'm contemplating Helter Skelter too! 8y
Jellybeanbon Thanks so much everyone. It's very basic. I'm trying to get into bullet journaling but the problem is now I suddenly take hours just to make my lists. In stead of spending time completing the list. Hmm doesn't help much that I am an absolute procrastinater. 🤔 8y
Jellybeanbon @Sue I'm stuck with the same problem as you. I rarely stick to lists and I like to pick my books according to my mood but let's see how this goes. 8y
Jellybeanbon @laura317 ah no that is quite unfortunate that you have read Frankenstein. Maybe you can still share your thoughts on the book with the club? 8y
Jellybeanbon @Karen3 don't just contemplate it I can highly recommend this book. Since I started it I use every moment I can to listen to it. 8y

So is anybody in the mood to join me for a #bookphotochallenge for August?

Varshitha I am interested but don't think I can read this many books 8y
Maike Oh this sounds good, I'm in! 8y
pppooraikul Interesting. What's the rules? 8y
See All 9 Comments
Jellybeanbon @Varshitha oh no you do not need to read them all. It's just a photo challenge so according to the day you take a photo of a book that suits the theme. For instance today you'll take a photo of your TBR book or pile. 😉. I can't read that much either - unfortunately 😬 8y
Jellybeanbon @Maike great stuff! @pppooraikul how it works is each day you take a photo of the book that corresponds with that day's theme on the pic. This challenge is mostly done on instagram but I thought it could work great here too. 📚 8y
Varshitha Count me in then !! 📚 8y
pppooraikul Whoah. I'm in! 🙋🏽 8y

I look forward to listening to this on audio everyday. I'm only about 6 hours in out of the 26 hours. Of course, Charlie is absolutely bonkers but I can't help to think how much this has to do with how the system failed him repeatedly and due to the way his mother (almost non-existent) raised him.

Gulfskye I read this years ago, it keeps popping up in my Audible "recommended for you" feed and I've been thinking about reading it again. 8y
BekahB If you haven't listened to it yet, there's a fantastic 13-episode series from the You Must Remember This podcast that covers the Manson family. It's so good! 8y
Jellybeanbon @Gulfskye well this is my first time listening to it and I'm so enjoying the audiobook but I thinking of reading it as well. 8y
See All 8 Comments
Jellybeanbon @BekahB eeeck! That's fantastic news I'll have to get your hands on it. Will have a look if it's on audible. 8y
Gulfskye So after seeing this post and going back and forth do I get Emma Cline's The Girls or Helter Skelter? The reviews for The Girls are hot and cold, and why read about a fictional Manson when there's the real thing? So today I downloaded Helter Skelter! 8y
Jellybeanbon @Gulfskye I think that was a very good choice! I tried to read The Girls but I just couldn't get into it - will maybe try it again after Helter Skelter. I'm still listening to it. I've got about 9 hours left and I can honestly say that I haven't been bored for 1 second. 8y
Gulfskye Helter Skelter brings up a lot of memories for me. The summer before 8th grade, I think, my dad and I read it together and talked about it over supper every night and listened to The Beatles White album all summer discussing the songs and what they meant, if anything. So strangely enough, I have fond memories of the first time I read Helter Skelter and seeing this made me miss my dad. So of course I needed to listen to the audioversion! 8y
Jellybeanbon @Gulfskye that is such a special story! Thanks for sharing. I can imagine the memories! I am absolutely fanatical about The Beatles so I'm enjoying all the references to it and how Charlie thought they were talking to him. 8y

In the Woods | Tana French
post image

I'm thinking about giving this a go? Would you recommend it in this #recommendsday?

Minimalgrl Love her books ... I would highly recommend 8y
BookishFeminist Yes! Tana French is great. 👍🏼 8y
winemom I, personally, couldn't get into it. The description is so intriguing, but once I started reading, the chapters dragged forever with little resolution. I think it's just her writing style. 8y
See All 19 Comments
Jellybeanbon I'm going to check it out and get back to you guys (or rather girls). I am listening to Helter Skelter too so I'm not sure if I will get any sleep between these two. I guess that means more time for reading 🤓 8y
LitHousewife Yes!!!!! And all of her books thereafter. 8y
wanderlustywriter This is one of my favorite books of all time. The writing was beautiful, it had some of the most well-drawn characters ever written, and the setting was incredible. I know some people dislike the perceived lack of resolution but I encourage you to read it and if you are confused at the end, come talk to me, I've thought long and hard about it and think I can provide some answers. (Sorry for the long comment—I just love this book so much!) 8y
Jellybeanbon @wanderlustywriter don't dare apologise for a lovely and descriptive comment. I just started the book and I am already sucked in. I will let you know what I think and definitely come knocking if I don't understand. 8y
RiotMom I LOVE Tana French! She's one of my go-to recommendations! 8y
ErikasMindfulShelf It's great! I can't wait for her new book! 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Tana French is one of my favorites. I loved this one and really the 4 that came after. Enjoy!! 8y
CareBear I agree with everyone else!! All of her novels have blown me away! 8y
Jillsandypants Yes!! Read it! 👍😄 8y
TheWellReadOwl Yes! So good. 8y
Keryntalia Adding my voice to the chorus - Tana French is so good. The second one in the series is my favourite but the first one is excellent too. 8y
wanderlustywriter @Keryntalia agree that The Likeness is the best one! But you need to read In The Woods first to fully get the impact of it. @Jellybeanbon enjoy! 8y
Johanna414 Yes!!! Read it! 8y
Gulfsidemusing Great on audio! 8y
Cpb I agree with @Lakesidemusing great on audio. I also agree with those that said The Likeness is the best. I love Tana French and can't wait for her new one coming here in the States in Oct. I do recommend reading French in order, so you get the full effect of how she picks her characters. 8y
MyNamesParadise Tana French is the most talented writer I've ever read. Her diction and prose are phenomenal! Enjoy! 😊😊 8y

For #recommendsday I recommend one of my all time favourite book I know this much is true by Wally Lamb. This is quite a beast of a novel but 4 years later I still find myself often thinking about this book. I decided to share the last paragraph of the book with my hiblio-community because it is most probably one of my favourite quotes in the book. If this is not on your TBR pile, add it immediately 📚📚📚📚

Gulfsidemusing Loved this book... and just about everything else Wally Lamb has written! 8y
Jellybeanbon @Lakesidemusing ditto on that. I still need to read We Are Water though. What's your favourite novel by him? 8y
Gulfsidemusing My favorite? Hmm, a toss-up between this and The Hour I First Believed. Wishin' and Hopin' was hilarious, but I wasn't as big a fan of We Are Water.... though I heard the audio version is amazing. 8y
See All 8 Comments
[DELETED] 2232195534 Read this so many years ago and loved it. Maybe it was an Oprah pick? @Lakesidemusing Was The Hour...the one about Columbine and what did you like about it? 8y
Michreads Loved that book! 8y
Gulfsidemusing @kaysreadinglife I read The Hour I First Believed too long ago to recall specifics, but I know it made me "feel all the feels". Oprah chose a couple of Lamb's books back in the day... She's Come Undone and I Know This Much is True. I'll be forever grateful to her for introducing me to this author. 8y
Jellybeanbon Also really enjoyed The Hour I First Believed. I think he just has an amazing talent with writing and thus everything is really good. I was amazed with he's female perspective for She's Come Undone. 8y
Kaye Beautiful writing. 8y

LitHousewife You are brave!! 8y

See All 12 Comments
SoniaC I only have about 10 hrs left! Seriously disturbing. 8y
Jellybeanbon @LitHousewife eeeck! I know right?! 8y
Jellybeanbon @emilydecato I'm enjoying it a lot. It's loads of details and I like how they go into detail with the forensics and investigation. 8y
Jellybeanbon @JPeterson it's narrated by Scott Brick I don't know if your familiar with him? I think it's rather decent. His voice doesn't bug me but of course it's not as entertaining as Amy Poehler for instance. 8y
Jellybeanbon @SoniaC this is only my second audiobook so I'm still getting used to listening to books in stead of reading and with loads of details as this book I feel a bit lost at some times nevertheless I am really enjoying the book! The details are really gruesome! I feel so despondent at times when you hear how the investigation was actually messed up and how much mistakes were made. 8y
SoniaC @Jellybeanbon how funny it's my second audio book too. Loving it! 8y
Nking5025 I tried to listen to this audio book but it skips a lot of what is in the actual book. I don't know if that's common because I'm not a experienced listener of audio books but it bothered me a lot, so I just had to stop listening. 8y
Jellybeanbon @Nking5025 I didn't realize that. I only have the audiobook maybe I should get the kindle as well then. Is it important bits? 8y
Nking5025 I didn't finish the audiobook but as far as I went not really, it was just a pet peeve of mine. 8y

youngreadrshelf Feed by M.T. Anderson or Ready Player One were great as audio. 8y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Also great if you want fiction instead...try Hounded by Kevin Hearne, or Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. 8y

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟 With tears in my eyes I bid farewell to dear Ove. I tried so hard to avoid finishing this book because it felt like I had to greet an old friend and I wasn't ready yet. Needless to say this book is one of my favourites for 2016 and it will stay with my for quite a while. I'll definitely be checking out some of his other titles.

Marla I love, love, love this book and have recommended it to so many people. I know I will be visiting Ove every year. I tear up when I think of this book. 8y
Kizzy Have this waiting for me on audio 8y
Jellybeanbon @Marla I also think it will be possible to visit Ove every year. I teared up quite often will reading this. @KizzyBass start listening to it as soon as possible. It's just one of those books you instantly fall in love with. 8y

Kicking back after some serious packing and heading into my 3rd hour of the #24in48 challenge. Didn't quite expect to get so close to tears so often with this book but I'm loving every moment. Oh and @Litsy not enjoying any #readathon snacks but rather some delicious cold water from my favourite unicorn bottle

Anei I require those pants and that water bottle. 8y
Jellybeanbon @Anei @Anei the pants are actually a very fluffy unicorn onesie (it's winter here in South Africa). I assume it's easy to see that I adore everything unicorn. Not sure where you're situated but I bought the bottle in Germany at a shop called Tchibo 8y
Anei I am jealous of your weather and your unicorns! Sadly, I am in the US, but I might get to Europe in December, will have to see if I can find that shop! 8y

So, very bad planning from my side. I've been looking forward to the #24in48 weekend since I heard about it.
