OMG I internally screamed at this book about a hundred times. It‘s the kind of book you need to pause every other chapter to take in. And you‘ll need many coffee for that.

I guess all Asian countries have similar roots of patriarchy. Though Korean are far more sexist, each and every situation told from Ji-Young‘s POV is eerily familiar to me. It‘s relatable to a point that it‘s almost uncomfortable.

Gosh, I need a short break!

My BFF was in a toxic relationship and just got out. She read this book and said it helped her see her worth. A feminist take on a dark patriarchy side of South Korea. She was so deeply impressed she lent me this for a week. Gonna start the journey now!

Thank you @zezeki for the tag! And @Eggs for hosting #wondrouswednesday

1. Lots! 😂 But the first on my list is Garth Nix‘s Keys to the Kingdom series.
2. When I was in grade 5 and stayed up late with my father reading HP and the Half-blood Prince the very first day it came out. (The only time I‘ve ever read with father.)
3. Kelsier from Mistborn 😍

Asking for an opinion: should I continue this one or bail?

I‘ve read the first of the four parts. It‘s interesting but painfully slow. It‘s been sitting on my shelf since last August. Plus, I‘ve just found out what the author had done to her child and that made me hesitate.

But people either gave 5 stars or 1 star for this. I really don‘t know what to do next. Please help! 😂

KathyWheeler I loved this book, but if you aren‘t enjoying it, there‘s no reason to finish it. 5y
ljuliel I‘ve never read anything by this author , so don‘t have an opinion about whether the book is good. I‘d say if you‘ve been trying for that long to finish it, and you‘re still struggling with it, you might be wise to move on to something more entertaining. Those books with reviews like that are tricky , aren‘t they ? You either see really low or really high reviews, so it doesn‘t help you decide, it just makes you more confused. 5y
MidnightBookGirl I loved this as teenager, but I had very different reading habits back then (and honestly the whole relationship between Morgaine and Arthur probably fed into my VC Andrews love). I never continued on with the series, and I read the same news about the author as you have. I can't imagine slogging through it now... unless it was on audiobook, where I could speed it up. Maybe cheat on it with a faster paced book, and see if you come back to it. 5y
See All 14 Comments
pppooraikul @KathyWheeler You‘re right. I think I might have to let it go. Perhaps I‘ll come back to it when I‘m ready. Thank you. 😊 5y
pppooraikul @ljuliel Exactly! I mean, how can one love it and another hate it completely? 😂 I hesitated because I‘m afraid that I‘ll miss something great. But I guess I might have to accept the fact that it cannot keep me hooked. 5y
pppooraikul @MidnightBookGirl Yeah. I feel troubled about the news. I love how she told the story via female characters whose names and importance got mixed up in some other Arthurian tales. I also love the hint of feminism in her voice. But considering her real life, it just seems...so wrong. I think I‘ll let it go for now. (Or maybe I if I can find an audiobook and speed it up... 😂) 5y
CBee I loved it. But I read it a long time ago and only found out about the author a year or so ago. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn‘t read it today 😳 Definitely sounds like taking a break is a good idea 😁 5y
julesG I forced myself through this. I think I gave it 3 stars. I'm all for bailing if you don't enjoy the book. 5y
Palimpsest I generally try to separate the artist/ author work from their real lives, but as much as I‘m interested in this time period I will boycott this series forever because she was a child molester to multiple people. I don‘t care if the money profited from books sales are now going towards abuse victims. Everyone should make their own decision about whether they want to read it themselves though. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
pppooraikul @CBee Indeed! I think I really should read some other books before giving it another chance. I‘m glad you loved it though. 😁 5y
pppooraikul @julesG That sounds like a pain! Hearing this, I seriously think I‘ll bail. 😂 5y
pppooraikul @Palimpsest That‘s my problem exactly. I tried so hard to read it as if I know nothing of the author‘s horrendous abuse. It made me feel kinda obliged to finish. But somehow the thrill‘s gone and I felt uncomfortable when I read some certain scenes. Knowing the money‘s now for a good cause did help ease my mind. But all in all, I think I‘m gonna bail on it. Thank you for sharing your view on the matter! 😁 5y
CBee @pppooraikul sounds like you‘ve figured it out 😊 5y

I‘d contradict a saying that a good book is one you couldn‘t put down. There are lots of great books I enjoyed and still took me days or weeks to finish.

The #readharderchallenge2020 task 13 “read a food book about a cuisine you‘ve never tried” is a real challenge bc I don‘t wanna read a cookbook nor a chef‘s memoir. I‘m not into the art of cooking no matter how much I enjoy eating.

This book, y‘all, nails it. Adventurous plot, historical war theme, lovable characters and FOOD. The most exquisite cuisines one could conjure up in the middle of the ocean as if one‘s life depends on it.

Halfway now.

#8 An audiobook of poetry
#9 The last book in a series
#20 A middle grade book that doesn‘t take place in the US or the UK

As I reread HP for a twenty-ishth time (couldn‘t help myself), I just noticed something. Not sure if this has been discussed anywhere before but it seems weird to me that Dementors affected Harry to the degree he lost consciousness. Upon rereading, I realized that, of course, Harry had another (part of a) soul inside him at that time. And that soul was damaged beyond repair. That must be the true answer! 💡😎

This book is a BLAST. Audiobook is amazing too.
I adore Harry Dresden. Bus he does have flaws. I‘ll leave Murphy description of him, which I completely agree, right here:

“Dramatic death scene. Noble sacrifice, right? Tragically misunderstood? Hah! I understand you, buddy. You‘re such a pompous, arrogant, pretentious, chauvinistic, hopelessly old-fashioned, stupidly pigheaded . . .” 🤣

KathyWheeler I loved when she said that to Harry! It was so perfect. 😄 My husband and I just finished listening to this book and are on the next one now. James Marsters has become Harry Dresden to me; if they ever do another Dresden Files show, I want him to play Harry even though he‘s too old for him. 5y

When I read the word thaumaturgy, I instantly thought of The Name of the Wind. Later on, I saw Mr.Rothfuss‘ review on goodreads an completely agreed with him. THIS BOOK IS A BLAST. Plus, if he says next audiobooks are even better, then they really are and I‘d better go get the second one stat.

PS. Harry Dresden can be really annoying with his “old-fashioned gentleman” thingy. I hope to see some development as many reviews suggested, though.

This focuses mainly on Cowardly Lion, the infamous collaborationist. He sought out Mother Yackle to get some information on Elphaba‘s past and ended up, quite involuntarily, recounting his own.

Like previous books, the pace picked up at the latter 1/3. The end served storyline well & was satisfying enough. However, I was barely engaged & had only a little sympathy for Brrr. 🤷🏽‍♀️

It‘s either a pick or a pan for this one. No compromises. Just like Elphaba herself.

It‘s completely different from the broadway show but also very similar. Full of drugs, sex, politics, philosophy magic and religion, it invokes conflictual questions with no provided answer. The ending is far from satisfying. The writing style is hard to get into and I don‘t think I understand half of it. Still, it got a pick from me. Weird.

Suzze I tried. I really tried. Nope. 6y
pppooraikul @Suzze Don‘t force yourself! If it doesn‘t work, dump it. Tbh, I didn‘t expect to finish it this time. (My first attempt was six years ago. 😂) I only picked it up again when I was about to put it into my DNFs. Oh, irony. 6y

A story of Alyce, a young witch whose mother had been burnt alive by the Witchfinders. She soon found herself trapped in the war between Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary of Scott. Fast-paced and gripping, although there‘re small holes in the plot but they could be overlooked. I really liked Alyce especially in her opening scene.

A quick pleasant read. And the most beautiful cover ever! Thanks again for the gift. 😘 @TheLondonBookworm

LeahBergen That cover! 😍 7y
Soubhiville Wow! Yep I‘d buy it just for the cover! 7y

As in my previous post, I‘m participating in #ArmchairAudies in Fantasy category. All these finalist titles are very promising. And almost all of them are the first of a series, an independent prequel or a standalone. Only one exception is Snake Eyes but I‘m willing to read book 1-10 to get there. (I‘m on book 3 right now.)

P.S. Oh, I‘ll try not to be biased even with my fav author Cat Valente on the list.
P.S.S. Anyone wants to join? 🙋🏽‍♀️

Zelma I don‘t kn9w how the audio is but one 9f y favorite reads last year was The Refrigerator Monologues! 😍 7y
pppooraikul @Zelma I‘m glad to hear that! It‘s the book I have the highest hope for. 😉 7y

Around this time of the year, the #ArmchairAudies is usually held by @LitHousewife to listen to Audie Award finalists and predict the official result. Sadly, this year she isn‘t able to run it. (I hope you‘re well, Jennifer. *virtual hugs sent*) But Miss Dee and Miss Susie (no Litsy account) are helping out this time. 👏🏽

I‘m participating in Fantasy category. If anyone is interested, please don‘t hesitate to reach out! 😉

My friend wanted to order a book (a soccer book of some kind) from Book Depository and I thought shipping halfway across the world is a serious journey and I ought to order some too to make the trip worthwhile. I ended up ordered 3 while my friend got only 1. 🤣

And I‘d like to give credits to Book Depository, as this is the first time I use their service. They took care of the packages really well!

Tehanu: Book Four | Ursula K. Le Guin
Pickpick

After reading 4th volumes of the Earthsea series, I decided I like Ursula Le Guin‘s voice in female protagonists way better. Or maybe it‘s just because I like Tenar so much. This book spoke strongly on feminism and totally worth reading. 👍🏼

DivaDiane I agree! She continued the series mostly because she wanted to say something different about women and how they live in the Earthsea world. The last 2 Books in the series really make a wonderful ending for the series. 7y
pppooraikul @DivaDiane Yes! I can‘t wait to start the next one. 😁 7y

Bought a piece of cake and made myself a nice cup of tea ready for the crazy amount of paperworks. But who could ever work when there‘s a tempting book at hand? One of the most beautiful covers I have.

>> I‘ve read a few chapters and OMG @TheLondonBookworm you know EXACTLY what I like! Thanks for this amazing Christmas present! 😘❤️🎁

I opened my dorm room and found this book in a bag hanging on the doorknob, with a simple post-it note “HBD” and no signing anywhere.

But I knew by heart it was from one of my friends who I‘m currently having a quarrel with and this is definitely his way of making-up. How can I still hold grudges after this? I mean, not all your friends buy books as an apology, right?

P.S. It‘s an extremely belated BD gift. Almost a month actually! 😂

LiteraryinPA What a nice gesture! 7y

pppooraikul @LiteraryinLititz @LeahBergen It made my heart melt really. Though sometimes I hate that he knows too much about my weak spot. 😂 7y
pppooraikul @Alfoster Yes! And all the arguments will always be quickly mended. Lol. 7y
Kaye I‘m a little slow. I kept trying to figure out the CODE for HBD 🤔🤪 7y
pppooraikul @Kaye To be honest, I was at a lost at first too bc my birthday is Jan 18! 🤣 But I guess it‘s just an excuse so he doesn‘t have to write “I‘m sorry” or “Apology” or something like that. He‘s just impossible to pin down. 🙄 7y
Kaye One of those mysterious fellows. Gotta keep an eye on those ones. They always keep you guessing. He can‘t be all bad if he gives books as gifts. 🙂 7y
pppooraikul @Kaye You‘re right. I‘ve come to the same conclusion too. 😊 7y
Dragon And it‘s a cute book , he should get points for that. 😀 7y
pppooraikul @Dragon He did indeed! 😁 7y
