Current reads, one fits #NaturalLitsy.
It was your cruelty to him that made him disappear by that same“under ground rail-road“ or “steam balloon,“ about which one of your city constables was swearing so bitterly . . .
Thomas Smallwood in his laughingstock letters August 10, 1842
First mention in print of an underground railroad helping slaves escape north, per the tagged book. Within a few months it has been adopted across the nation for the ways slaves escape to freedom.
This should really be titled Where's Litsy? I got a new phone recently, and can't find the litsy app on PlayStore. 😲 Anyone know what gives?
Imagining motherhood opens the door to imagining every power relationship, every profound connection . . . Far from depriving me of thought, motherhood gave me new and startling things to think about and the motivation to do the hard work of thinking.
Jane Smile, quoted in the tagged book.
To cross the vast ocean to their south, water-chasing dragonflies with forbears in Northern India had hitched a ride on a sedate "in-between seasons" morning wind, one of the monsoon's introits, the matlai.

2nd try at this book. May have to buy it to finish, as it's long and I don't want to rush. I'm seeing different things in it than the 1st try. It's beautiful and sad.
I enjoyed this, but may have to reread it in English to see what my mind makes of the ending. (Read as printed with Orkney dialect and English on same page.)
Poetry & science fiction at the same time.
#bookspin
This was a soft pick for me. The writing was good and the romance was not the focus of the book, but it was too predictable for me.

Excited to learn about this festival in Nashville, especially since the Decatur Book Festival has moved to a date I can't attend.
Anyone from Georgia interested in attending?

Feral cattle, slag heaps, exotics out of bounds, barren earth for 100 years - what happens when humans abandon a site that has been heavily used? Journalist Cal Flynn gives us a glimpse of various places around the world. None have come back to what they were before we were there, but many have regrown and diversified. #Naturalitsy

This was a June goal, so I don't have things that I can't find.
1. Two books for #Bookspin, and one for #LPMBC. Finish Islands of abandonment. Finish an ARC for #NGGSummerSmashup.
2. I'm choosing the tagged book. It isn't without problems, but it made me think.
3. Jack McDevitt's Octavia Gone. Not awful, but I'm over this series.
#WondrousWednesday @Eggs
Am finding this memoir slow going, but interesting. Not reading much this weekend because I'm with family, but hope to continue on the plane ride home tomorrow.
#NetGalleyGroup #NGGSummerSmashup
Goal is to read Mama Ionesco A Report in Kin & all of Deep wheel Orcadia.
#Bookspin #Doublespin
I'll be reading one of these two on the plane tomorrow.
Rabiha steps out of her hut, sets out to warn the Mahdi. (River Spirit)
In the beginning I choose kishōtenketsu, the Japanese version of the four-part narrative structure that flows from Chinese poetry. (The Night Parade)
#FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl
Which one? I am willing to try any of these.

I think I read more from the library - I restrict purchases to books the library doesn't have and/or ones I think I'll want to reread. Also, it restrains the book clutter at home 🌝🌞🥤🌈
A few miles north, off the coast of Staten Island, lies Shooter's Island. Once an oil refinery and shipyard - it has been abandoned now for nearly a century. . . .
Now owned by the Audubon Society . . . satellite images show it bosky, densely vegetated, and untrodden with paths. . .

1. Florence! Not from a book, but I'm going to Italy next summer!
2. Yes, if you're a science fiction fan. (the tagged title - back to the Imperial Radch)
3. Umm. . . Got two on the go - The baby on the fire escape and Islands of abandonment.

I'm taking my friend Roxanna, my sisters, and their dog Bella.
First we go to a book and a craft store, then load up on food and drink, and then head to our beachfront condo.

Repost for @Purpleness.
Count me in - I just started rereading the tagged book 'cause I didn't have the energy for anything new last night.

Count me in.
Thought provoking and hopeful, yet some things didn't make sense to me. I enjoyed Beatrice's story more than Reiko's. Glad I read this, may be eligible for a reread.
This is also my #doublespin for June! #Bookspin
It is cool in the tunnels, not cold as it was outside.
Last line: It may already have begun; the enemy may already be inside the walls. But we must find faith enough to fight. For in one hour is thy judgement come.

My salvia is blooming in my straw bale garden. A few gardenias left on my next door neighbors bushes, magnolia in bloom, and some gladiolas, all as I walked around my neighborhood.
#MidsummerSolace day 2 @AllDebooks
Summer, for me, is overwhelming growth to beat back, air that can be so humid it's hard to breathe, and non-stop interaction at work.
I'll have some fun too, like a concert in the park tonight with friends

In the bedroom, Beatrice turned towards the full-length mirror. It was still covered with a dusty sheet. She pulled it off and looked at herself. Beatrice took off her clothes. She stood naked in front of the mirror. This body, she thought. These arms stirred and carried. These hands chopped and minced. These strong shoulders. These capable thighs. These wide hips. This belly that moved with her, that was her.
1. Counting Sappho, though I've read a few poems, not everything.
2. As many as the author can write will. With ongoing series, it seems like eventually there's isn't anything new & fresh.
3. Faye Kellerman's Decker/Lazarus series & Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series. I'm saving the last ones in these series.
1. Terraformers by Annalee Newitz.
2. I seen to be alternating between two books in trying to finish. In May i focused on The Man who spoke snakish (Kivirahk.) In June I plan to focus on the 1000+ pager Kin (Jergovic.)
#Two4Tuesday, @ TheSpineView
. . . knowledge deepens appreciation. Leopold saw a marsh, veiled in a thin gauze of mist. . . and saw not only this, but the history of the cranes and all their evolutionary predecessors. . . he held to his eyes like binoculars an understanding of how this momentary pastoral scene formed a necessary component to, or a synecdoche of, a greater, wondrous whole.
Finished Deborah Crombie's A killing of innocents tonight. Plan to finish To each this world by Julie Czernada this weekend.
The tagged book is a readable and fascinating description of what we know about butterflies and what we're still learning. Did you know the proboscis is porous? That monarchs navigate using antennae?
On to the next book, a science fiction romp.

Beatrice Bolano looked down at her almost empty plate. She was hungry. Hungry in the way they warned about in church, whispered about in the girls' bathroom at school, scratched into the wall behind the Buff ' n' Go. Beatrice was hungry for taste, texture, mouthfeel. Crispy, crunchy, silky, chewy. Beatrice was hungry for juxtaposition, and she would never tell anyone as long as she lived.

My goals:
1. whittle my library list back down to 10 items
2. request 1 book from netgalley with fall deadline
3. Don't buy any books in June
