Standing in the Shadows
Standing in the Shadows | Peter Robinson
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
The 28th twisting installment in the DCI Alan Banks mystery series that Stephen King calls "the best now on the market." In November 1980, Nick Hartley returns home from a university lecture to find his house crawling with police. His ex-girlfriend, Alice Poole, has been found murdered, and her new boyfriend Mark Woodcroft is missing. Nick is the prime suspect. The case quickly goes cold, but Nick cannot let it go. He embarks on a career in investigative journalism, determined to find Alice's murderer--but his obsession leads him down a dangerous path.Decades later, in November 2019, an archaeologist unearths a skeleton that turns out to be far more contemporary than the Roman remains she is seeking. Detective Superintendent Alan Banks and his team are called in to investigate, but there is little to be gleaned from the remains themselves. Left with few clues, Banks and his team must rely on their wits to hunt down a killer. As the two cases unfurl, the investigations twist and turn to an explosive conclusion.

Bk2 of May is done! I‘m both happy to have finished a book but heartbroken that there will never be another DCI Banks novel. And the ending seemed very abrupt, like he was still writing it when he died, or was on the final draft. Don‘t get me wrong, it was a brilliant story set in two time periods, but it seemed like there should‘ve been another chapter at least! And I‘ll never get Annie‘s ending story or Winsomes or Banks!🥲 #SeriesLove2024

Lizpixie I might go back to the beginning and reread all 28 books!🙌 7mo

1. Counting Sappho, though I've read a few poems, not everything.
2. As many as the author can write will. With ongoing series, it seems like eventually there's isn't anything new & fresh.
3. Faye Kellerman's Decker/Lazarus series & Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series. I'm saving the last ones in these series.

TheBookHippie I love Sappho! 2y

This book goes back & forth between the past & the present. In the past, November 1980, Nick Hornsby is wondering about the death of Alice Poole. Her body has been found in the park and people are wondering if she was murdered by Yorkshire Murderer. In 2019, a skeleton is discovered at an archeological dig near Eastvale, so DCI Alan Banks is called to investigate.

EadieB They ascertain that the body was buried between 2009 and 2016. This was an interesting book that had both murders coming together in the end. There‘s a lot of twists that happen in the book that keeps the plot moving along. If you like police procedurals with two connecting plots from the past to the present then you would love this book. 2y
EadieB I would like to thank NetGalley and William Morrow for a copy for an honest review. I‘m so sad to report that this may be the last book in the series as Peter Robinson has died recently. 2y
Pageturner1 i am interested in reading this, but sad author passed. 2y

I‘ve had some more #BookMail in the last few weeks so thought I‘d catch you up! The 1st is the last ever DI Banks novel by the late and lamented Peter Robinson. The 28th book in the series, this is a dual timeline story. 1980, student Nick Hartley comes home to find police searching his flat after his ex girlfriend is murdered & her new boyfriend is missing. 2019, a body is unearthed at a Roman dig that‘s a lot more recent & Banks is called in.

#InWithTheNew #JanuaryJazz

Books from some of my favourite series and / or authors to be published over the next month, including what is most probably the last Inspector Banks Book by Peter Robinson 😢

@Eggs @AlwaysBeenALoverOfBooks

Eggs Would that be the inspector of the DCI Banks series? 2y
Andrew65 @Eggs Yes unfortunately Peter Robinson died last year. If you haven‘t read the books it is an excellent Detective series. 2y
