An informative book about seven British women writers who haven‘t maintained their fame like Jane and the Brontes, I found the writing style frequently turned me off. It was hard to sort the general history commentary (life was hard as a woman, and DeWees hammers that point home repeatedly) from the specific biographies in several chapters. Still, I have some new-to-me books to track down. Second finish of #20in4

Shout-out to all my #PemberLittens and #BronteBuddies who may be in search of some more #19thCentury female writers. DeWees' book gives us insight into seven other literary ladies in what has been called "a feminist history of literary Britain." #FallTreasures

Charlotte Turner Smith, Helen Maria Williams, Mary Robinson, Catherine Crowe, Sara Coleridge, Dinah Mulock Craik, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon were successful in their day but are oddly unknown today. Enjoyed this blend of history and biography, in a fairly comprehensive look at these women‘s lives. Their familial and romantic relationships, struggles with poverty, mental illness, & overcoming the stigma surrounding women writers at the time.

Jane Austen has stood the test of time, with her delightfully satirical novels. But, she wasn‘t the only one to take pen in hand and earn a little bit extra cash. DeWees highlights 7 other women of Austen‘s time who were determined to print their words. In an age where “respectable” women did not openly publish works, this is a work of many a #GirlGoneWild . #Movember

Recommend this for #NFNov ...it was captivating! I want to read their works!

This is my kind of book, forgotten English women writers? Yes please! I'd only heard about one of these women beforehand and I knew nothing about her life but am now eager to read lady Audleys secret.
Simply put if this is something that interests you as much as it does me then you will love this book and can I recommend for #uklittens watching the programme on iplayer about forgotten women composers. We are overlooked in all areas of culture.

"You, dear reader, it really only takes you. You and your unending capacity for love - of stories, of books, and, maybe most important, of women who defy the conventions of their times in order to make their voices heard"

This book was entertaining and educational. I learnt so much about these seven women and their accomplishments. Their daring attitudes towards the social oppression against women is inspirational. I'm so glad I read it! ??

I had started this book at the end of summer, but I wasn't able to finish it before school started. I am an English major, so I had a bunch of reading to do for my classes. I decided to put off the rest of this one until Christmas break. Now that I am done exams and officially on my break I am finishing this off! I can't get enough of it 😍

PolaroidPoet One good thing about majoring in English is that you truly appreciate your breaks to read for the sake of reading. No forced discussions. No essays. Just pure enjoyment. Enjoy! Happy holidays! (edited) 7y
shelbyy @PolaroidPoet I love reading my assigned books, but it's nice to be able to read what I choose too, so yes I do really appreciate my breaks 😝 7y

This book was even better than I expected. DeWees suggests that the reason that these 7 women didn't make it into the cannon was due to them not being demure ladies who obeyed the strictures for women at the time. These women pushed the envelope, both in their own lives and in their fiction.

Fifth and last book from the #24in48 readathon. DeWees examines seven British authoresses whose writings stirred emotions and opinions. Some were contemporaries of Jane Austen, some wrote in the beginning of the 1900s. Poets and novelists, their words contained political and social commentary. Fun to read about these women; may have to try and find copies of some of their writings!

Haven't done much reading as the season has gotten busier but did manage to finish this gem. Highlighting seven women authors of the late eighteenth-nineteenth century, this novel explores some popular works of the time that just don't get read today. I found each chapter interesting and full of interesting tidbits about being a female writer during that time.

Overall I really enjoyed this book about seven lesser known women writers of the Romantic and Victorian periods. Not Just Jane is at its weakest when it tries to explain why the women are not remembered, but shines when the women themselves step to the forefront. DeWees ably highlights gaps in our knowledge as she advocates for an expansion of the canon. Full review: https://goo.gl/piR6gL

Not only did I love the color combo of this non-fiction gem but the research Ms. DeWees did on these lesser known female English writers was spot on. Her passion for the subject matter shines throughout. Having read Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, reading about these popular writers during their respective times made me feel remiss that I had never heard of them. It shows how English literature has been moulded by others' wishes and politics.

Such an interesting read! At times, her assumptions, interpretations and conclusions on the writers were more generous than mine, and I was left with many questions - but that could simply be due to the lack of information on some of these "forgotten" authors. And oddly, I didn't finish with a burning desire to read the original works of all these ladies. However, if Regency and Victorian era lit is your cup of tea, you'll likely relish this!

You know what happens when women meddle in politics or "interfere with what does not regard their sex"? Well, they receive a "severe lesson" courtesy of the guillotine. According to the 1794 edition of Gentleman's Monthly, this should serve as a warning to all "ambitious women." #Nastywomenofyore
