Conspiracies abound in this surreal and yet all-too-believable thriller in which a deadly underground game might just be altering reality itself, set in the same world as the popular Rabbits podcast. "A taut mystery for a time of conspiratorial madness."--Cory Doctorow, author of How to Destroy Surveillance Capitalism It's an average work day. You've been wrapped up in a task, and you check the clock when you come up for air--4:44 p.m. You check your email, and 44 unread messages have built up. With a shock, you realize the date is April 4--4/4. And when you get in your car to drive home, your odometer reads 44,444. Coincidence? Or have you just seen the edge of a rabbit hole? Rabbits is a mysterious alternate reality game so vast it uses the entire world as its canvas. Since the game started in 1959, ten iterations have appeared and nine winners have been declared. The identities of these winners are unknown. So is their reward, which is whispered to be NSA or CIA recruitment, vast wealth, immortality, or perhaps even the key to the secrets of the universe itself. But the deeper you get, the more dangerous the game becomes. Players have died in the past--and the body count is rising. And now the eleventh round is about to begin. Enter K--a Rabbits obsessive who has been trying to find a way into the game for years. That path opens when K is approached by billionaire Alan Scarpio, rumored to be the winner of the sixth iteration. Scarpio says that something has gone wrong with the game and that K needs to fix it before Eleven starts, or the whole world will pay the price. Five days later, Scarpio is declared missing. Two weeks after that, K blows the deadline: Eleven begins. And suddenly, the fate of the entire universe is at stake.

This book was better than the podcast. It is full of mind twisting conspiracy theories, and Mandela affects.

1. Tagged. It was such a total mindf**k, but I loved it!!
2. Technically it came out on April 30th, but I just started Erik Larson's The Demon of Unrest. I happy to report that its excellent, one of his best books IMHO.

38/150 This book is totally 🍌👖!! I can't say much about the book without ruining the story, it's like Fight Club, the first rule of Rabbits is you don't talk about Rabbits. It's a game, but more than a game, it might be the end of the world. It's very meta, very pop-culture oriented. According to Storygraph is is Rabbits #1, I can't wait to see what the author does for an encore. 5 🌟

#pop23 Rabbit on Cover

The first rule about Rabbits is that you don‘t talk about Rabbits.

The premise is that there‘s this underground game that is so secretive, you can‘t even be sure you‘re playing it. But if you are playing, you might get killed. A danger which every player ignores.

I found it little too repetitive, though the conspiracy theory/reality altering premise was interesting. I just couldn‘t suspend my disbelief enough to buy in.

BarbaraBB Is it based on Fight Club?? 1y
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB No. I‘ve not even read that book or seen the movie, but I know that tag line. 1y
squirrelbrain All sounds a bit weird to me… not the book for me. 1y
Ruthiella @squirrelbrain I don‘t think you‘d like it either. It started out clever but couldn‘t sustain it, IMO. 1y

Thank you @Pogue for the great #LitsyLoveSummerSwap package. I love the mug, I hadn‘t realized how many banned books I‘d already read. W‘ll have to see if the teas fit the moods of the books but they definitely match the covers. 🙂 And Dune, in person, is a more intimidating #chunkster than IT. Can‘t wait to get started. Thank you again.

Deblovestoread Great box! Dune is sooo good! 2y

Read:
Rabbits: not perfect, but perfectly enjoyable.
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Nightbooks: a dark Grimm retelling, wonderful for middle grade. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reading:
The Rook: still intrigued… hoping for quicker movement soon..
No one is Talking: still kind of bored, waiting for the shift.

Acquired: Under Lock & Skeleton Key and Post-Traumatic. Anyone read these?

Happy Easter weekend!!

These are the 3 books I‘m reading right now…

I‘m enjoying Rabbits immensely, and am about 2/3 done. It‘s an audio book, and I also give kudos to the narrator!

I‘m finally reading the Rook… it was recommended to me so long ago. I‘m also loving this so far.

And then there was the Lockwood. I‘m just… first, I feel like it‘s false advertising, though I haven‘t finished it so maybe “it‘s getting there.” (The rest below👇🏽) #RealLifeBookGroup

Avanders Is this going to be an examination of the impact of social media on our lives? And second, idk, it feels a little pretentious so far. Though I have, I admit, lol‘d a few times. Still reading… (edited) 3y
NovelGirl82 I‘ve had The Rook on my tbr forever and still haven‘t gotten to it & have looked at Rabbits several times since it released and haven‘t decided to pick it up yet. 3y
DogEaredBooks Rook is one of my favorite books/series. The third one is coming out this fall 3y
Avanders @NovelGirl82 it‘s so good so far (the Rook) — I‘m so tired (perpetually these days), but it keeps me up at night anyway! And even though Rabbits wasn‘t perfect, I found it so enjoyable to read!! @DogEaredBooks oooh so exciting!! 👏🏽👏🏽 3y

This one is exciting and hard to put down. It's basically a computer game played IRL and the players are going missing. This may not be everyone's jam. I think #audiobook is probably the way to go with this one since it started out as a podcast.

One of the best books I've ever read in this genre. So many books, games, and movies I love pop up in this story. 💚

On the surface it seems like a book about a secretive video game, but soon other dimensions are introduced, mysterious people keep popping in and out of the story, and the corruption and conspiracy grow with each new chapter. Rabbits is a definite thrill ride and I loved every second.

vivastory 🤘👏 I'm glad you liked it! 3y
Addison_Reads @vivastory It's a brilliant piece of literature. I'm surprised it hasn't received more praise. Your comparison to Blake Crouch and Ernest Cline books was very accurate and exactly how I felt while reading it. 3y
vivastory I'm really surprised it hasn't received more buzz too. It was the only book I've read since RP1 to give me similar vibes. 3y

Addison_Reads @Christyco125 I'm not sure but I'd listen to a podcast that was based on this book. 3y

🎧📚 This sounded like a fantastic book. Great idea!

How many times did the MC tell her partner she was “fine” when she was anything but? There was no character development, the characters had no depth.

I waited a few days to see if my opinion might change. It was very like Ready Player One but lacked the charm. It had interesting ideas & I plan to listen to the podcast as I hear it‘s better. The book was ok.

Extra star for the cover 😁

If you like the Podcast you will love this book. It's as bonkers as the podcast and just as interesting. I love the entire premise of a giant secret game and the conspiracy behind it.

This was a wild and crazy ride. If you enjoy mind-bending, reality twisting, conspiracy driven gaming adventures, you‘ll undoubtedly enjoy this book. And if you‘re a fan of Ready Player One, you‘ll definitely like this book which will have you questioning everything you think you know. The characters certainly do.

Rabbits is a mysterious real-world game that players aren‘t supposed to talk about. In fact, no one knows if it‘s really happening. I feel like if Ernest Cline, Blake Crouch, and Hank Green‘s books all got together and had a baby, it would be Rabbits. I felt the ending was a little rushed, but I loved this.

Hooked_on_books @vivastory I think you‘d like this one. 3y

3/5

K is obsessed with the secretive game Rabbits, but as the 11th round is beginning, K learns the game needs to be fixed before the world is destroyed. I didn't realize this was a spin-off from a podcast, and it probably would have made more sense with that context, but I do think worked as a stand alone. The tension that the (possibly) multiverse elements create were interesting, but a times those same elements led to the plot being abrupt.

Alfoster Agree! It was a little too weird for me!😫 3y

I made it to 60% of this book and couldn't take all of the swear words, with constant running in circles. I did like the beginning and the premise but I felt it went on too long. What fascinated me, is in California there was a similar game people were pulled into and they didn't know who controlled it. If I go back and finish it I will update my review.

Pick, mostly
Young gamer, known only as “K”, has the ability to recognize patterns in seemingly random coincidences. Because of this skill, K quickly becomes immersed in a dangerous underground game, Rabbits.
The clues and plot are not always easy to follow, but navigating the adventure along with K was a fun ride.

Damn. Just finished this and my head feels like it might explode. Rabbits is a game. Possibly ancient, very mysterious, definitely deadly. If you like conspiracy theories, connections, coincidences, weird science, video games, pop culture references, and a dash of horror, you‘ll like this. It has Ready Player One/Fight Club/Matrix vibes but brings its own brand of insanity as well. I‘m not sure it all made sense, but reading it was a wild ride. 😳

Bette This sounds great. Thanks! 👍 4y
