Bookseller: The First Hugo Marston Novel
Bookseller: The First Hugo Marston Novel | Mark Pryor
Who is killing the celebrated "bouquinistes "of Paris? Max an elderly Paris bookstall owner is abducted at gunpoint. His friend, Hugo Marston, head of security at the US embassy, looks on helplessly, powerless to do anything to stop the kidnapper.Marston launches a search, enlisting the help of semiretired CIA agent Tom Green. Their investigation reveals that Max was a Holocaust survivor and later became a Nazi hunter. Is his disappearance somehow tied to his grim history, or even to the mysterious old books he sold? On the streets of Paris, tensions are rising as rival drug gangs engage in violent turf wars. Before long, other booksellers start to disappear, their bodies found floating in the Seine. Though the police are not interested in his opinion, Marston is convinced the hostilities have something to do with the murders of these "bouquinistes." Then he himself becomes a target of the unknown assassins. With Tom by his side, Marston finally puts the pieces of the puzzle together, connecting the past with the present and leading the two men, quite literally, to the enemy's lair.Just as the killer intended."

I found this while searching for books set in France that aren't centered around WWI or WWII. I loved it! It's the first Hugo Marston thrillers/mysteries. When Hugo's friend Max is kidnapped, Hugo sets out to find those responsible.

I really enjoyed this book. An ex FBI agent works for the U.S. embassy in France. A friend/bookseller appears to be kidnapped and turns up dead after selling him two books. Were the books why he died? Is his new girlfriend‘s father involved? So many questions to answer! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Aims42 Ooo sounds riveting!! 5y

4🌟 this is the first book in the series. Hugo Marston is head of security at the Paris embassy. His bookseller friend is missing; add a book with secrets, a tough newspaper reporter, a retired CIA officer friend and you have a very good book

Say it isn't so! Regardless of how you feel about B&N, closure would bankrupt communities of a book store in many cases and I can't imagine a world without a bookstore. https://www.bookstr.com/barnes-noble-danger

Hooked_on_books If only people would shop B&N instead of Amazon. 7y
BethM @KathyWheeler my community has a BAM but we're one of two in my state. Every other place has a B&N. @Hooked_on_books so true. From a financial standpoint i get it. I got a new release for my aunt from Amazon for $28 that would've cost me $40 at a store. But im very conscious of what we stand to lose with bookstores so Amazon is an isolated use for me. 7y
KathyWheeler @BethM I think my aversion to BAM is probably specific to my experience here — the people who work at the store here don‘t know much about books, whereas the people who work at the B & N here know a lot about them and can make good recommendations. 7y
BethM @KathyWheeler that makes sense- back in the day our Walden's went through a period like that. I'm lucky most of this staff are pretty good. (edited) 7y

A retired FBI agent working for the US Embassy in Paris (sigh!) uncovers a gang of Romanian drug dealers when a bouquinistes, isn‘t my command of the French language impressive😉, is kidnapped. The city plays a wonderful background to these two stories. It is all very intriguing. Book #2 is on my TBR list.

Got myself a little book haul today! I was originally planning on getting a winter coat at my local thrift store, but their selection was very bad; either they were too big or they looked too weird. Anyway, I figured I might as well buy something while I was there. Are any of these good? Also, I just noticed that Dark Places is the third book, so I might need to buy Sharp Objects.

#TBRtemptation post 2! The first in the Hugo Marston series. Max, an elderly Paris bookstall owner, is abducted at gunpoint. His US embassy friend, Hugo, enlists Tom, a CIA agent, for help. Turns out, Max was a Nazi hunter. Then, as gang wars ramp up in the city, other booksellers disappear and are found dead. Then Max becomes a target of the unknown assassin(s). In another era, Emma would have been described as handsome, and it would have been a compliment. In her late fifties, she had the erect posture and even features that gave her a timeless appeal.

Her appearance sparked off my enjoyment of this book...
And the introduction to bouquinistes has left me fascinated with this breed of booksellers!

TheBookDream @DeeLew It's cool, but I'm far too spoiled by a shop in my own state called Book Barn where almost everything is between $1-$6. Many of the books at The Strand (unless they're academic books, where $25 for a $50 book is pretty great) are only a couple of dollars below retail. The atmosphere and merch are pretty fantastic though. 8y

Paris. The booksellers "bouquistes" who sell from stalls along the Seine, antique books and secret messages within the book pages, all made for a great read. Always pick up a book with bookseller, bookshop or bookstore in title. There was a lull in the book action but the conclusion was exciting.
