Kristin Lavransdatter: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
Kristin Lavransdatter: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) | Sigrid Undset
"[Sigrid Undset] should be the next Elena Ferrante." --Slate The turbulent historical masterpiece of Norway's literary master In her great historical epic Kristin Lavransdatter, set in fourteenth-century Norway, Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset tells the life story of one passionate and headstrong woman. Painting a richly detailed backdrop, Undset immerses readers in the day-to-day life, social conventions, and political and religious undercurrents of the period. Now in one volume, Tiina Nunnally's award-winning definitive translation brings this remarkable work to life with clarity and lyrical beauty. As a young girl, Kristin is deeply devoted to her father, a kind and courageous man. But when as a student in a convent school she meets the charming and impetuous Erlend Nikulaussn, she defies her parents in pursuit of her own desires. Her saga continues through her marriage to Erlend, their tumultuous life together raising seven sons as Erlend seeks to strengthen his political influence, and finally their estrangement as the world around them tumbles into uncertainty. With its captivating heroine and emotional potency, Kristin Lavransdatter is the masterwork of Norway's most beloved author--one of the twentieth century's most prodigious and engaged literary minds--and, in Nunnally's exquisite translation, a story that continues to enthrall. This Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition includes an introduction by Brad Leithauser and features French flaps and deckle-edged paper. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Stowe Public Library in VT has a huge annual sale this time of year. I kept to only one small table because Lord knows I don‘t need more books. I‘m fairly certain I have the Undset trilogy packed in all those boxes of books I haven‘t unpacked yet but these were nice and clean so I grabbed them. I was so happy to find a Pym! I‘ve wanted to read her forever.

AmyG Excellent Women is wonderful. 1y
KathyWheeler I really liked Bridge of Sighs. 1y
Suet624 @KathyWheeler of course I had to check Litsy before I purchased it. Really glad to hear you liked it. 1y

Suet624 @AmyG it seems like everyone likes any Pym, but I‘m glad to hear you liked this one in particular. 1y
Ruthiella Nice haul! And that is my favorite Pym title! 1y
Suet624 @Ruthiella yippee!!! 1y
Aimeesue Careful or you may become a Pymphomaniac. 😏 1y
Suet624 @Aimeesue 😂😂😂 1y
BarbaraBB Kristin is great too! 1y
LeahBergen I loved Excellent Women! And the Undset trilogy, too! 👏 1y
Suet624 @LeahBergen @BarbaraBB I‘ve read the Undset trilogy twice already. Once in my late teens. Once in my mid-30‘s. And I guess now in my late 60‘s. It seems I‘m following the timeline of the series! I might be headed to the monastic life if I follow the arc of the book. 1y
BarbaraBB That‘s awesome! The older we get the more appealing the monastic life becomes 😃 1y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB no kidding. 1y
LeahBergen 😆 Love it! 1y
DivineDiana I recently read that Dorothy Day read the Undset Trilogy twice. My goal is to read it! 1y
Suet624 @DivineDiana did she? Dorothy is my role model and heroine. 1y
DivineDiana @Suet624 I feel the same about her. Did you know that there is a new boat named after her as part of the Staten Island Ferry? 1y
Suet624 @DivineDiana I did! I was pleasantly surprised. Seemed so random, but wonderful. 1y
DivineDiana It was a surprise! I was inspired to travel to NY to take a ride for my birthday in June. It was an adventure! 1y

Thanks for the tag @Ddzmini
🪴 Read and loved the tagged trilogy in spring a few years ago.
🪴 Can‘t wait to see the tulip bulbs I planted bloom. We also have a large vegetable garden. Seedlings indoors at the moment.
🪴 I always look forward to my first gin and tonic of the season. Best enjoyed on the front porch or back garden while reading. Not quite there yet though. This has been one cold spring!

Every year I pick a book that is @ 1,000 pages and begin on Jan. 1. My goal is 100 pgs/week, done by mid-March! I alternate fiction and nonfiction. 2022 is a fiction year for me; I've chosen the tagged book (1,144 pgs). Do you have your own chunkster you want to tackle? Do you want encouragement on your journey? Join me in the #chunksterchallenge2022 ! There's no time limit, no requirements, no specific book to read. Just cheers to the finish!

CoverToCoverGirl So excited! I think this will be a mostly fiction chunkster challenge year for me! 😁 However I‘m not entirely set on my picks as of yet. 3y
melissajayne Yes I am 3y
JenReadsAlot Yep I'm joining you again this year, but need to pick my book yet! 3y
See All 73 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think I need to join this one for 2022. Now I just need to pick a book. 🤔 3y
Mollyanna Although I am still working on this years book, I am in for next year too. I‘ll need to think about my choice, but it‘ll be non-fiction 3y
squirrelbrain I may join in…planning on reading A Suitable Boy next year, with @Lindy as a #buddyread so it would definitely count as a chunkster! 3y
Amiable @squirrelbrain That definitely counts! And it‘s also a really good book —that was my chunkster pick about 6 years ago. 3y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Mollyanna @squirrelbrain @Lindy @Dostoyes Yay! I‘ll add you all to the tag list for encouragement posts. (edited) 3y
slategreyskies I‘m excited about tackling Kristin Lavransdatter with you for this challenge, @Amiable !! :) 3y
Amiable @slategreyskies Me too! This one has been on my TBR for several years! 3y
MaureenMc I definitely want to tackle a chunkster this year, maybe more than one. Count me in! (although I haven‘t finalized my pick yet, still waffling 😁) 3y
Lcsmcat Count me in! I‘m not sure which book yet, but I loved doing it this year. 3y
Amiable @MaureenMc @Lcsmcat Great! Welcome aboard! 🙂 3y
IndoorDame I definitely want to join! I have so many chunksters on my shelf and I‘m terrible about following through with finishing them! I‘ll work on choosing one this month week 😁 3y
rockpools I‘d like to join you again 😊. Think I‘m finally getting over my chunksterphobia! 3y
Amiable @rockpools Hooray! That is literally my whole goal for doing this challenge—to make the chunksters less intimidating! I‘m so happy. 💃🏻🕺 3y
Lcsmcat I‘m thinking Don Quixote. Anyone interested in joining me? 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Les Miserables has been on my to-read list for a long time. I was thinking about finally reading that one, maybe. 3y
JenReadsAlot @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's the first one that came to me as well! 3y
Lindy @squirrelbrain I‘m still keen on A Suitable Boy in 2022. Not in the early part of the year, however, since I still have a long way to go with healing from my brain injury. I will let you know when I‘m back to reading. 🤗 3y
Megabooks I will probably join in mid year! 3y
catiewithac It's not 1000 pages, but I need help making it through Moby Dick 3y
Amiable @catiewithac Absolutely join us! It‘s about tackling a chunkster and making it through to the end! And it may not be super hefty in size, but “Moby Duck” is definitely a challenge. Welcome! 3y
Amiable @Megabooks I will keep you in the tag list so you just jump in whenever you‘re ready! 3y
JuniperWilde @Amiable I am keen to read Kristin L 3y
squirrelbrain Of course @Lindy - I look forward to reading it with you once you feel up to it. 3y
CarolynM I failed again this year (it really wasn't a non fiction year for me, I was too much in need of entertainment and distraction) but I'm going to try to pick up where I left off with US Grant in the new year and hope for a better outcome 3y
Amiable @JuniperWilde Excellent! @slategreyskies and I would love the company! 3y
Amiable @CarolynM I hear you —my brain has been all over the place in the past few months. It‘s been taking me a long time to finish any books. I‘ll keep you on the tag list for encouragement! 🙂 3y
Jess861 It's not quite 1000 pages but I've been staring at The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett on my bookshelf for quite some time. Would love to try and get through it in 2022. Trying to get through a 913 page book with a 5 year old and a 2 year old will be quite the challenge 😄! 3y
Kelly326 @GinaKButler and I are ready!! We have our chunksters for this year picked already!! Can‘t wait to start!! 3y
MaureenMc I‘ve finally decided. Going to tackle The Eighth Life. I really want to concentrate less on my book number goal this year, and choose books I‘ve been wanting to read, even if they‘re “too long.” 🤞😁 (edited) 3y
GinaKButler Yay! @Kelly326 are reading Don Quixote, The Stand, Atlas Shrugged, and one of the Chernow biographies in 2022! 3y
Amiable @MaureenMc That‘s exactly why I started doing this as a challenge to myself! I realized I was consistently reaching past the big books and grabbing the shorter ones just to hit a self-imposed “book total” every year. So I decided to purposely challenge myself to read at least one super chunkster every year. Good for you! 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler @kelly326 You might have a reading buddy —it looks like @Lcsmcat is considering “Don Quixote” as well! 3y
Amiable @Jess861 That definitely counts as a chunkster! And we should spot you another 200 pages on top of that for the challenge of reading it around your little ones! 😀 Welcome aboard! 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler Which Chernow bio are you guys reading? 3y
GinaKButler @Amiable I think we‘re leaning toward Washington. (The other option is Hamilton). Join us? 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler I have actually read both of those already! (I LOVED “Washington.”) I own “Titan” and haven‘t read it yet. Although it‘s “only” 832 pages so I wouldn‘t pick it for my own official challenge choice. But I do want to tackle that one at some point too. I think I also own “The Warburgs,” which might be a similar length. (edited) 3y
CoverToCoverGirl It‘s an EXCELLENT read @GinaKButler and so is Hamilton. 3y
Mollyanna I loved Washington too @GinaKButler. The Warburgs looks intriguing. I may to gift it to myself for Christmas 🤶 😉 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yes!!! I have several chunksters I've been putting off - I'm planning to significantly lower my GR reading goal to help me mentally tackle these - sometimes wanting to hit the GR number means I put off the longer books!! 3y
Amiable @TheAromaofBooks Exactly!! Last year I actually set my GR reading goal at 1. One book. Which I finished on Jan. 2. After that it was all gravy. 😀 There are so many really good big books that I‘d been avoiding because I could read 4 others that were short but helped me inflate my book count. I finally realized how ridiculous that was. That‘s why I now purposely seek out 1,000+ page books for this challenge! (edited) 3y
Lcsmcat @GinaKButler @Kelly326 I‘d love to join your discussions of Don Quixote if that‘s ok. 3y
AmyG I‘m in as I so want to read this chunkster @MaureenMc Want to discuss when we finish? (edited) 3y
catiewithac I'm going for 3y
Amiable @catiewithac Very nice! You‘ll be in the Multiple Chunksters Club! 3y
MaureenMc @AmyG Sure thing! 👍 3y
Tineke I want to participate too. I want to read my biggest book at 1474 pages. 3y
Tineke When I finish that one, I'll read at 1448 pages. 3y
Amiable @Tineke Welcome to the Chunkster Crew! “A Suitable Boy” is one of my favorite chunksters! I also read “Gone With The Wind,” but it was many years ago. I should probably give it another go soon. You are in for a treat with those two! (edited) 3y
tokorowilliamwallace Interesting methodology, but I highly doubt I can read 100 pages of something a week; supremely easy for most serial readers. I have way too many chunksters I have both already started and which I've recently bought. A fellow reader with whom we have some mutual respect for each other just completed Murakami's chunkster, and I have to look into it to figure out if I think I would like it and the literary themes and subject matter it incorporates. 3y
BookNAround I think I‘d like to tackle The Tale of Genji this year. 3y
Amiable @tokorowilliamwallace I can‘t speak for everyone, but I‘m not a serial monogamous reader. I always have at least 4-5 books going at a time, usually at least half of them nonfiction. For this challenge, though, I pick one specific book and pledge to read 100 pgs/week until it‘s done. While simultaneously reading my other books. That works for me. It doesn‘t work for everyone, which is fine. The goal is just to finish a chunkster of your choice. 🙂 3y
Amiable @BookNAround Excellent! Glad to have you back again! 🙂 3y
IndoorDame I‘ve decided I‘ll be doing Les Miserables. I started it a few years ago, and was really enjoying it before I stalled out. Definitely time to take another crack at it. 3y
Amiable @IndoorDame Awesome! We'll all cheer you on to the finish this time. 🙂 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @amiable, what if I did the sixth volume in Outlander, with its glorious 1400 pages of a highlander observing the American Revolution for the challenge? It's pretty, has a snowflake on its cover, and 'snow' in the title, so a 12 days of Christmas read? 3y
Amiable @tokorowilliamwallace You can read whatever you‘d like! That sounds grand. 🙂 3y
Bookwormjillk I missed your post. I‘m in again. I plan to read 3y
Amiable @Bookwormjillk Yay! Welcome back, Jill! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m in for 2022 again. Please tag me. Now to select a book. 😉 3y
melissajayne I‘m in for 2022 as well. A Promised Land for sure; I‘m thinking I might have one or two more after that. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @amiable, I just thought of two other options: William T. Vollman's Europe Central, and St. Augustine's 1400-page civitate dei (which I had excited started at the time, eager to make some historical-literary-thought influence with. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @Amiable, I started The Warburgs a while back, too! I don't currently have it with, but I gotta get back to it. 3y
Smarkies I have a couple I would like to tackle this year - the second part of a Churchill biography as well as A Dance with the Dragons. Please tag me. 😁 3y
Amiable @Smarkies Will do! Welcome to the chunkster crew! 🙂 3y
Blackink_WhitePaper @Amiable Recently I came across this challenge. It is very interesting. I have not tried reading any chunkster books though I have many on my TBR. I want to read pillars of the earth and Anna Karenina this year. I will start this from Feb. thank you for hosting. Is there any chunkster buddy read? (edited) 3y
Amiable @Blackink_WhitePaper Welcome! I am not sure if anyone else is tackling those particular chunksters this year to start a buddy read. Everyone picks their own and we read at our own pace. If you haven‘t read any books of these size yet, I‘d recommend that you start first with “Pillars of the Earth” —it‘s chunky, but it‘s very readable and you will likely fly through it! (edited) 3y
Blackink_WhitePaper @Amiable Thank you so much 💐☺️👍🏻 Then I will start with the Pillars 🤓 3y

I loved Kristin. I fell in love with all the characters. This heroine was real. The desire, the pride that resulted in true remorse. I became lost in the story at times and forgot where I was. I enjoyed the struggle of the old beliefs with the new Christianity. I needed this book. I also thought of Gone with the Wind. Scarlett and Kristin were both dedicated mothers and there was unrequited love from Kristin's brother-in-law. #FoodandLit

Here‘s an eclectic mix of books about #Norway and by Norwegians for #foodandlit in May. The tagged book is a #chunkster that I read back in the 1990s. I‘m very fond of it and hope to reread it someday. (We will visit the author‘s hometown during our tour of Norway in May.) Giants in the Earth is about Norwegian immigrants to America and it is very very grim. The Monsters book is gruesome. I‘ll post more books as the month progresses.

Texreader @KCofKaysville @TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I hope y‘all enjoy it when you read it. I was captivated by the ancient legal system. When I read it in the 90s, I‘d been to Norway once or twice & just to the Bergen area. Now I‘ve driven across Norway‘s width & a fair part north to south by the North Sea, & now I‘m a lawyer too, so I‘m sure I‘d get much more out of a reread. I think it‘ll help when I post photos around Norway if you read it in May 4y
Tamra @Texreader 😜 I don‘t remember the end! 4y

#ChunksterChallenge2021 @Amiable #LateToTheParty I‘m joining the challenge late to tackle this 1124 page book that has been languishing in my stacks. It is set in the 14th century and I‘m all about the medieval lately. Slow and steady while I read other books too.

Freespirit Hi @Wife I purchased this embroidery as a kit from https://www.amitie.com.au/ it is a wonderful patchwork shop near Melbourne Australia. You can buy it directly from Linladen which I assume is based in Sweden. They are beautiful..printed on linen with linen thread. The designs come from 1870..I will post progress pics and tag you! 4y
Wife Thanks so much for the info🌹 4y

Ebook trilogy on sale today. Epic and definitely a chunkster so if you want to read it for #foodandlit #Norway you may want to start now.

I loved it, and had the good fortune to visit Sigrid Undset‘s hometown Lillehammer, Norway, some years ago. When our month for #Norway gets here, in May, I‘ll post loads of photos including her statue in the center of town.

Lcsmcat I have the three volumes in paperback, but have yet to start them. Maybe for next year‘s chunkster. 4y
Texreader @Lcsmcat Yes it definitely takes a commitment 4y
Daisey Thanks for sharing. This is on the #1001books list as well, so I might as well add to my collection. 4y

Trilogy. Medieval Norway. Classic because it treats timeless themes over the course of one woman s life. One of my top 10 all time favorites. Have read 3x. So far, that is #medievalfiction #scandinaviafiction #norway #nobelprize #trilogy #classic

Nute I am so interested in this book. I have the Penguin Classic Edition. I wonder if it contains the trilogy of books? 4y

This is such a fantastic novel I read long ago. Here is an interesting article about it: https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/5/7/21250016/kristin-lavransdatter-novel-sigrid...

I‘ve had the honor of visiting Sigrid Undset‘s hometown of Lillehammer after I read the trilogy and took a photo of her statue that‘s on the main shopping thoroughfare through town.

I recommend the book if you have some spare months on your hands.

BookwormM I enjoyed this one as well 5y
Amiable I have this one in line to be my #chunksterchallenge book in 2021 or 2022! 😀 5y
AlaMich I read this several years ago and found it enchanting, not least because how many other books has anyone read set in 14th century Norway? Uh, none, I‘m guessing. 5y
marleed I read this trilogy in college many years ago. I loved this story. In fact I received my only honors in a course (A*) for a paper I wrote about it. My roommate was in the class and named her first daughter Kristen because of her love for the story. 5y

This is an epic telling of Kristin‘s life starting at age seven. She lives a typical life, for the 1300s. But in other ways she‘s rebellious and unlike most Norwegian women of her time. The themes are quite modern, including women‘s sexuality and the significant downsides of her turbulent marriage. ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage On the flip side, Kristin is incredibly pious, as Undset was for part of her life. So the discussion of Catholic themes—including copious amounts of guilt—is also strong. Kristin is a conflicted woman, and I couldn‘t help but be drawn into her dilemmas. 5y
BarbaraJean This has been on my TBR for so long! One of my favorite college professors recommended it to me years back. 5y

Way too boring.

Way, way, way too boring.

I see this has a rating over 4 ⭐️. And I tried to hang in to see where it turns good. But I can‘t do it. It‘s a shame - my copy is beautiful, & has all three books in the trilogy. Still, I‘ve got to move on from this one.

Now I have to find two more picks for books published in 1920 & 1921 for the #192019challenge 😕 Any suggestions?

Kalalalatja Thank you! I never got the hype about this one 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Sweettartlaura @Kalalalatja She‘s a Nobel Prize winner 🤷🏻‍♀️. Some people like the medieval epic; maybe because this focused on a young woman instead of a young man this was more exciting 100 years ago; maybe because most people never saw a pic of Norway 100 years ago but she explains it beautifully? I dunno. But I can‘t give it any more time. There‘s nothing here for me and no hint that there will be 😕 6y
Sweettartlaura But I‘m glad I‘m not alone @Kalalalatja 😜🥰 6y
llwheeler I used The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton for 1920, I enjoyed it. I don't have a pick for 1921 yet so let me know if you get a good suggestion 🙂 6y
Sweettartlaura @llwheeler I‘m going with Agatha Christie‘s first for 1920 - The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Still on the hunt for 1921. And I‘m subbing out my 64 pick, too - tried to read JCO‘s first novel, but it was awful. Luckily I have something on my shelves I‘m happy to re-read, 6y

mklong @vivastory Yay!!! 😊 6y
mklong @vivastory The introduction is pretty spoiler-y so I‘d skip it if I were you. It‘s one of those intros that assumes we‘re all familiar with the plot. 6y
vivastory Thanks for the heads up. I usually read the introduction afterwards, but I was thinking of reading this just for some background information on the author & the history of where the book takes place. 6y

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this slow, detailed read although sometimes it was a slog. I loved all the details about caring for her young children. A main theme in book is how Kristin wanted to follow God's path but also her own, and I was thinking last night how that is true of every person of faith... It's just quite sad that she didn't know more joy in life, but even the fact that her joy was mixed with sadness is just a fact of life.

It took me almost 3 months, but I'm finally done! It was definitely an interesting read... I didn't expect it to be so religious and I wonder what non-religious people make of it.

BarbaraBB I am non religious and loved it. I don‘t even remember it as being very religious. I do remember her friendship with the priest (or was he a monk?) and loved that part of the story especially. 7y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @BarbaraBB yes her friendship with the monk is lovely. Everyone's view of God is pretty harsh though and there is the implication that she can never find peace and joy with Erlend because of the way their relationship started. Years and years later, she still lives in the shadow of that sin and everyone still remembers it. 7y

Today's author spotlight: Sigrid Undset! Born in Denmark, she died in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1949 at 67. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. She joined the Norwegian Authors' Union and was head of its Literary Council. Her home, in the traditional Norwegian timber style, was called Bjerkebæk--it's a museum today. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Leftcoastzen Cool post ! First time I‘ve seen a photo of her.thx 7y
AnneCecilie @Lindy you have the correct spelling of this work 7y
See All 8 Comments
Lindy @AnneCecilie Thanks. I wondered if there was a special letter that transliterated differently, but maybe it‘s simply that b and v sound alike, or else a typographical error. 7y
Lindy @AnneCecilie My memory of this story can be summed up like this: it‘s cold and muddy, life is miserable, and then everyone dies. 😕 7y
AnneCecilie @Lindy the title was probably misspelled when put into the database. I've never read the novel, even if it has been standing on my shelves for 10 years, but I was forced to see the movie at school. 7y
Lindy @AnneCecilie “Forced” hmmmm. An unpleasant experience? 7y
