Mehso-so

The beginning of this year has seen me continuing my journey through small press and translated fiction. This is the story of a Norwegian girl who goes on a school semester in Australia where she ends up living in a renovated brewery with another girl. The brewery has only thin walls and the borders between the girls and sound and reality blur. While it was an interesting exploration of intimacy and loneliness it didn‘t fully work for me.

Pickpick

Kristin Lavransdatter was a #roll100 pick for December so I decided I would read book 1: The Wreath. Didn‘t quite finish it before the end of the year, but I did finish it yesterday.

This was lovely! Kristin is a strong heroine who struggles to balance love & obedience to her family & God with her own desires for her life. I was captivated by this portrait of medieval Norway. I also found some of Kristin‘s internal conflict to be true to life. ⬇️

MeganAnn As someone who was raised Catholic, the internal struggle to reconcile your desires as a young woman with the things you are told are wrong can be difficult to navigate; the author captured that authentically. Also as someone who has Scandinavian ancestors, the look into the medieval Norwegian family life was very intriguing. I could picture these characters as family. My grandfather was of 100% Norwegian heritage & my grandmother is half Swedish. 4w
MeganAnn I will likely continue on with book 2: The Wife at some point later this year. For now, I‘m taking a break to focus on #auldlangspine titles. 4w

Started this book yesterday and I'm hoping it's a nice, cozy winter read. It does seem like it could be the perfect book for a winter read. I'm also absolutely obsessed with this beautiful bookmark I got for Christmas 😍.

Jess861 @LeahBergen I'm in love. You can look up Mackenzie Myrick (I only know this because it's on the back of the bookmark) if you're interested - she has some beautiful items. 1mo

Pickpick

Well, this was much grittier than expected! Really well written and intense. The smatterings of charm and wit and humor were so well executed for a story that, overall, was not a light one. This had been on my TBR for a wicked long time and I went into it just trusting that I‘d put it on that (admittedly extensive) list for a reason. If you like a tidy ending and linear storytelling, skip it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Day 7: lights. Lots of lights on our tree, inside and outside of the house. I like a lot of colour at Christmas.
