Pickpick

This is an epic telling of Kristin‘s life starting at age seven. She lives a typical life, for the 1300s. But in other ways she‘s rebellious and unlike most Norwegian women of her time. The themes are quite modern, including women‘s sexuality and the significant downsides of her turbulent marriage. ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage On the flip side, Kristin is incredibly pious, as Undset was for part of her life. So the discussion of Catholic themes—including copious amounts of guilt—is also strong. Kristin is a conflicted woman, and I couldn‘t help but be drawn into her dilemmas. 6y
BarbaraJean This has been on my TBR for so long! One of my favorite college professors recommended it to me years back. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraJean Make sure you read the 2005 translation. The older books are in a kind of Medieval-ish English. 6y

BarbaraJean Good to know! I have all three in one volume, same cover as your Audible edition, so I‘m assuming that‘s the recent translation. 6y
Amiable This is on my short list for my “Annual 1,000-plus page book” for 2020! Glad to see your review. 6y
Leftcoastzen I went to your site to read your review, this has been on my TBR forever,I‘m on the hunt for cheap copies of the newer translation.Sounds good, big commitment. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraJean Yes, that is the more recent book! Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amiable Hope the review helps you, and that you like it when you read it. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen it‘s a BIG commitment. I started on May 6 and finished on the 26th—both audio and Kindle so I could focus as much as possible on it. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. 6y
ScrappyMags Hi friend! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ScrappyMags Hi yourself. How are you feeling and doing?? 6y
rubyslippersreads I read this in high school because my mom loved it, but it might be fun to read the newer translation. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rubyslippersreads I‘ll be curious to hear your impressions if you do. I also think an adult would get much more out of this than a high schooler. 6y
rubyslippersreads @BarbaraTheBibliophage You‘re absolutely right. I read Vanity Fair in the sixth grade and enjoyed it much more upon rereading as an adult. 😊 6y
Chrissyreadit I enjoyed the first book, but did not finish the second one. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Chrissyreadit Understandable. I liked the third book the most and the first book the least. I debated continuing but am glad I persevered. 6y
Chrissyreadit Maybe someday I will finish the trilogy. 6y
