Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover

✨NEW EPISODE✨#ReadingWomenMonth
This month on the podcast, we're talking about audiobooks. One of the books we're reviewing this episode is EDUCATED by Tara Westover. Based on Goodreads and other reviews, this book seems to be pretty divisive. It's the story of a woman who finds her way out of an isolated, fundamentalist Mormon culture. We were delighted to get to talk to Meaghan O'Connell about her book AND NOW WE HAVE EVERYTHING: ON MOTHERHOOD BEFORE I WAS READY. Pregnancy and motherhood look differently for everyone and in her story Meaghan explores the middle range of people who had not so great experiences but aren't sure how to talk about them. ⠀

I had heard good things about this book, but it far exceeded my expectations. At the beginning of the story, we meet Nao, a sixteen-year-old Japanese girl who has decided that suicide is the only answer. We then meet Ruth, who lives in Canada and who finds a diary washed up on the shore one morning after a storm. It's Nao's diary. And that's where things get interesting. Somehow, neither of us read A WRINKLE IN TIME when we were kids, so with the release of the incredible new movie, we decided it was time to give it another try. We talk about our history with the book and give our initial thoughts on Ep. 43, which you can listen to here: https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/blog/2018/05/02/ep-43-were-going-places

Anyone else out there who didn't read it as an adult? Or re-read it as an adult? ⠀

MsLeah8417 I absolutely loved reading this book earlier this year. 7y
LiteraryinPA I only read it as an adult when I was going to teach it to my 7th graders. It‘s not one of my favorites, but I‘m glad I read it. 7y
AppuNthebooks This was my first book of 2018. I was just as amazed that I hadn‘t come across it in my childhood. But with books like these age is irrelevant. It was thoroughly gripping and insightful. I look fwd to reading the rest in the Quintet. 7y

Milk and Honey | Rupi Kaur
post image

Next month is National Poetry Month and we‘ll be featuring some incredible contemporary poets all month on the podcast. ⠀

While we‘re not discussing MILK & HONEY by Rupi Kaur, there‘s no denying that this collection has put poetry back on the mainstream radar—and not without debate. Have you read it? What do you think? Is it poetry? ⠀

SW-T Definitely poetry. I wasn‘t sure what to expect and didn‘t love every poem individually, but taken as a whole, loved the book. Has restored my love of poetry. Accessible, enjoyable, and thought provoking, without being stuffy or pretentious. 7y
AvidReader25 Completely agree. I‘m not a fan of poetry, but this collection was beautiful. 7y
alysonimagines @SW-T I totally agree! I didn‘t love every poem either but I think the best poetry is accessible and Rupi Kaur has made poetry for the people with this book (and The Sun and Her Flowers), especially for women. 🌸 7y

zezeki While there are some good moments, overall I didn't consider it as poetry. 7y
bnp I'd call it poetry, and enjoyed the book as a physical object as well. 7y
Redwritinghood I liked it when I read it and it did get me into reading more poetry. Now that I‘ve read more poetry, though, I see why some people dislike it. 7y

"She was becoming herself and daily casting aside that fictitious self which we assume like a garment with which to appear before the world.”⠀
Oh, Edna Pontellier. She's quite the character. And, if you look at reviews of this book, quite polarizing. Regardless of how you may feel about this book, it's one of those daring stories that greatly influenced the books that followed it. We review this classic read (and five more) on the latest episode.

frailrouge I remember reading this in high school and crying near the end. I generally hated any book we were told to read as it felt like punishment. But this was breathtaking! Shifted my perspective on a lot of things. 7y

🎉Happy Birthday #JudyBlume! I'm sure many of us had their book obsessions start with a book by Judy Blume.
🎂
Have you read any of her books?
What was the first Blume book you ever read?
Any standout favorites?

cherinium I was a huge fan as a child in the mid 80s. Then, I innocently stumbled upon Wifey, which my mom had casually left tucked into a bookcase. I read it and was scarred for life as an 11 year old. Ha ha! All I saw was a book by Judy Blume lying there on the shelf. I had no idea what I was getting into. PS - I was so embarrassed, I never told my mom. 😶 7y

Quatro layers her novel with meaning, and her writing moves and rolls and burns with the emotions of her characters. In a just a few words, she conveys lifetimes of meaning. This book parallels spiritual and sexual intimacy, so it can get a little weird, and won't be for everyone. But her skill and insight into the truths we hide from others, and ourselves, make FIRE SERMON a book I will still be thinking about months from now.⠀

RidgewayGirl I had never heard of Quatro until yesterday when I read a great piece by her in the Paris Review. I‘ll have to hunt down a copy. 7y

Traveling with Ghosts: A Memoir | Shannon Leone Fowler
post image
Pickpick

After her fiancé is killed by a box jellyfish off the coast of Thailand, Shannon backpacks through Eastern Europe as she tries to come to terms with his death. Shannon says she wanted to this book to look at life after the death of a loved one, when the mourner must face day-to-day life as she deals with her grief. I appreciate how she emphasizes this theme, reminding us that grief is a never-ending process of emotions and memory. ?⠀

Nfergs It sounds really interesting. I like books about journeys both physically and internally. 7y
VeganCleopatra What is that print behind the book? 7y
thereadingwomen @VeganCleopatra It‘s somewhere in Yosemite. - K 7y
VeganCleopatra I was thinking it might be, I love black and white prints like that. Thanks for responding! 7y

I moved this short story collection to the top of my list so I could read it before the #NationalBookAwards. Some of the reviews I read said that it was a little graphic, so I wasn't quite sure what I was getting myself into. That said, each story in this collection was a wonderful, often harrowing, look at how society treats women's bodies. And it's not pretty. Longer review on our Instagram page about my favorite story. - A

amvs1111 Eager to read this soon! Glad to see Latina writers represented. 7y

Mehso-so

Dr. André Cabral is a Brazilian-born man living in London. Life is peachy until he gets a letter from his ex-girlfriend Luana, who he's not heard from in 30 years. He‘s a wealthy son and she‘s the maid‘s daughter. Even though he's moved away from Brazil, he is still haunted by his summer of unrequited love and this letter stirs up 30-years worth of repressed emotions. And then things get crazy. Has anyone else read it? - A⠀
Revised for TW incest.

MandaChittles Love the cover! 7y
mrozzz Yes, I read this over the summer! I absolutely loved this but no one else was talking about it which I found surprising. What would you compare it to? Will it make it to a podcast? 7y
thereadingwomen @mrozzz Some of the content is a little difficult to talk about. It was difficult for me to read, honestly. Right now, it‘s not scheduled to be on the podcast as it doesn‘t fit any of our upcoming themes, but we‘ll see. - A 7y
mrozzz Although definitely difficult I was simply blown away by the seemingly simple plot and its twisted outcome! Would love to see a mention in the podcast. PS your podcast is awesome 👍🏻 7y
thereadingwomen @mrozzz Thanks so much! We have some great episodes and interviews lined up for this year. - A 7y

Who else is still not ready to take down their Christmas tree? ✋⠀
I wrote a blog post about my favorite fantasy books of 2017! One of them is JANE, UNLIMITED. At first I didn‘t know what to make of this quirky choose your own adventure book. But Cashore quickly won me over with her creativity and orchestration of all the different timelines in JANE. I will never doubt her ever again. You can check out my other favorites over on our website.⠀- K

Before I started this book, I worried that this novel would be a cliched story about yet another unhappy, 30-something working in a large city. Instead, I found a novel that takes a fresh look at loneliness and why our emotional and mental health are so vital to our lives. I found ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE to be a beautiful love letter to people who discover the courage to live their lives to fullest in face of horrible tragedy. - K

valeriegeary Oh man. You just convinced me to stack this one! 7y
Aurora0044 I just started this one today! Now I‘m even more excited about it 😁 7y
bedandabook I listened to this on audio and loved it just as much. At first I wondered where the author was going with it, but the story and Eleanor‘s quirky personality won my heart. 7y

TheBookWasBetter1983 Love this book! 7y
dutchbot Agreed! At the outset, I worried this would become a quirky protagonist romance, but it was serious and the depth so engrossing and believable. Such a beautifully crafted work! 7y
melsimpson I thought this book was wonderful. Life affirming and warm without being sentimental and twee. Addressed some very serious issues about mental health and loneliness too. I loved it 💛 7y
