Lindy My grandfather had a tame squirrel who lived outside but would come indoors for treats fed by hand. As children, we were warned not to get close, however; we were told that we might get bitten. I love watching squirrels from my window—I see them leap from tree to tree and also run up the exterior stucco walls of my garage as if it‘s a giant square tree. 5y

Last night‘s re-read got me thinking. For a moment I juxtaposed this children‘s story on our adult reality - the migrants being the Whos and us urbanites/middle-class/elites/authorities/anyone who is safe and sound as the inhabitants of the Jungle of Nool - and found some unsettling issues. Do the people of Whoville need to be thankful to the people ‘bigger than they‘ who‘ve ‘got to protect them‘? That right there is inequality. Contd.👇🏽

AppuNthebooks Sure, Horton goes out of his way to help & pays for it too, but he puts the onus on the people of Whoville to be heard - “Make every Who holler! Make every Who shout! Make every Who scream!” But what about the rest of the denizens in the Jungle of Nool? Why isn‘t the onus on them to listen? Why do the Whos have to prove “they ARE persons, no matter how small.” No one should have to struggle to be acknowledged for #APersonIsAPersonNoMatterHowSmall (edited) 5y
Sace I appreciate what you are saying because we should be past that now. I am not being a Seuss apologist at all, but I'm willing to say that at the time he wrote, that was the conventional wisdom. But I repeat, we really should be WAY past that now and Horton should be a relic. At the same time, for younger people it is good for starting the conversation about being able to LISTEN and being aware. 5y
Sace You've made me see Horton in a whole new way! 5y
AppuNthebooks Same @Sace. I‘ve no issue with the story. I agree with all you said - that it‘s a great way to get kids to cultivate empathy & encourage them to listen. The dynamics of Horton, the animals & Whoville teaches them that. Dr Seuss will remain a favourite. I‘m only talking from the perspective of the current situation where adult, educated, powerful people are calling the shots & they are just not listening. And it‘s easy for it to remain just News. 5y

Reading it to my child tonight, I was heartbroken as the message was all too real. My country is currently facing a new crisis - apathy towards migrant workers. I‘m no activist nor do I have the guts or means. There are many like me. Many that aren‘t. Many that are better and bolder. But if anything is to change, we‘ve got to do as Horton says -“Make every Who holler! Make every Who shout! Make every Who scream!” #APersonIsAPersonNoMatterHowSmall

This was a good one. An interesting break from my non-fiction binge. But it was also a hard read. It‘s a #murdermystery infused with relatable, recognisable human experience and insight that makes it both unnerving and engaging. It made me want to pause and mull over the cascading effect of words, instances and the why, what and who of it. But also kept pushing me to turn the page. #Whodunit #StephenKingRecommends #LifeLoveAndLoss #pageturner

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻I really liked it too 5y
AppuNthebooks Thanks @Cathythoughts Have you read any of her other works? Also, any recommends from the same genre? I think I‘m in the mood for more. 5y
Cathythoughts Yes I also read One Good Turn , & Big Sky ..... both very good. Although Big Sky is the latest one in the Jackson Brodie series ( it didn‘t matter to me that I wasn‘t in the right order ) so I‘m pretty sure all that series is pretty good. It‘s kind of genre defying though , so is it more crime your after ? I need to get to the 3d one in this series yet ..... she‘s such a good writer ❤️👍🏻 5y
Cathythoughts I‘m reading a good thriller at the moment 5y
AppuNthebooks @Cathythoughts Yeah, she is. I especially liked it because it is genre defying as you mentioned. Jackson Brodie is a pretty intriguing character. I quite like him 😊I think I will pick up the other two. Thanks for the recommend! Will take a look at ‘The Kind Worth Killing‘ too 👍🏽 5y

The #EasterExtravganza readathon has been quite an eye-opener for me. The goal was to read 100 pages a day and that was hard to do in the midst of cyclical house work. But the real villain is social media! I had to step away to get the reading done. I didn‘t complete my goal of 3 books but I did manage 1 and a half! That in a week is new for me. I see this as a win and a means to attempt more disciplined reading. Thanks for hosting this @Andrew65

If there‘s ever a book to put the current scenario in perspective, it‘s this. Yes, it‘s fiction. But the fear, the raging need to thrive, live, commune and do all those little things we‘ve taken for granted is all too real. This books holds up a mirror to that primeval fear, the gnashing of reality with the cocooned society we‘ve built up, how little is needed to make us fall apart & how little is required to bring us together. #Corona #Quarantine

It‘s a telling thing, the title of this book. With all that‘s going on around the world, from climate change to the cascade of misinformation on social media, discernment is the skill we all need. And starting them young is this lovely book that states the harsh truth in an endearing way. My 5-year-old got into ‘what is a fact?‘ ‘Am I a fact?‘ Which in turn led to discussions on hard truths & the concept of many truths. A thought-provoking read.

This reads at a breakneck pace. Quite like the city it embodies. Right from the title, the cover to the first page and every one that comes after, sucks you in to the vortex of disparity in time, means, gender and the art of chugging along. Soul-crushing moments jostling ones that make you soar. If I had read this in college, I‘d be shook. #Booked2019 #MuslimAuthorOrMC

AppuNthebooks An Existential Crisis seems to be a right of passage. And this particular reading of two youngsters in a city and circumstance that‘s not hard to fathom, make it all the more relatable. That search for purpose, spiking interest in politics, moved enough to feel strongly but unsure you can do something to make a difference. The language is on point, the lead characters feel real. A fantastic read that stirs up old thoughts and notes to self. 5y

I‘ve got my hands in 2 different books (1 murder mystery and 1 biblio mystery that is slow-moving but I‘m keen on finishing it in what‘s left of this year).
