Rather than being a traditional biography, this is really a compendium of Freddie Mercury quotes from interviews he gave, organized mostly chronologically but also grouped by theme. It is an invaluable source for Freddie/Queen fans. Drawbacks: sources aren‘t individually cited for each quote, only generally acknowledged in the back of the book. Plus side: the index which helps if you need to find a specific quote about Radio Ga Ga, for example.
I‘ve always wanted to be my own boss and I always felt that I knew best. It sounds very precocious, but I knew what I wanted. And if it all ended tomorrow, I would do it all again on my own terms. I know it‘s all going to come to an end one day, but I won‘t lose sleep over it every night…I‘m in it for the challenge. I don‘t want it made too easy for me and nobody hands it to me on a silver platter. I‘d hate that. And I‘d refuse it anyway.
This book was written by Freddie Mercury‘s “husband”, Jim Hutton (in quotes because they didn‘t marry but they wore rings and Freddie called him his husband). Of all the books I‘ve read about Queen, this was definitely the most personal, private perspective on Freddie as a person, rather than a musician. It seems like Jim took really good care of Freddie, and they had a happy life together in the six years before Freddie died.
An interesting biography of a fascinating character. It introduced me to quite a bit of Queen‘s music that I wasn‘t familiar with. It made me see the lyrics of some of the songs I did know in a different way.
#BookReport: For a short book Freddie was still too long as there was a lot of repetition in the shared interviews. #Booked2021 3 🌟 I am surprised by how much I liked My Cousin Rachel. #AuthorAMonth 4🌟 All of my current reads are ok but not earth shattering. Hoping to get all the TBR‘s read this month for challenges and buddy reads.
Mercury had such incredible talent, how could anyone accuse Queen of hype?!
