The Exact Opposite of Okay
The Exact Opposite of Okay | Laura Steven
46 posts | 29 read | 121 to read
A hilarious, groundbreaking young adult novel for anyone who's ever called themselves a feminist . . . and anyone who hasn't. For fans of Louise O'Neill, Holly Bourne and Amy Schumer. Izzy O'Neill here! Impoverished orphan, aspiring comedian and Slut Extraordinaire, if the gossip sites are anything to go by . . . Izzy never expected to be eighteen and internationally reviled. But when explicit photos involving her, a politician's son and a garden bench are published online, the trolls set out to take her apart. Armed with best friend Ajita and a metric ton of nachos, she tries to laugh it off - but as the daily slut-shaming intensifies, she soon learns the way the world treats teenage girls is not okay. It's the Exact Opposite of Okay. Bitingly funny and shockingly relevant, The Exact Opposite of Okay is a bold, brave and necessary read. For readers of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Doing It by Hannah Witton and Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. 'Funny, unapologetic and shameless in the best possible way, this is a YA heroine (and book) that you've never seen before' - Louise O'Neill, award-winning author of Asking for It 'This book will make you laugh out loud, nod in agreement, cringe with recognition, and stand up and cheer. I adored it' - Katherine Webber, author of Wing Jones 'I LOVED this book! A really smart, relevant and switched-on exploration of teen sexuality, gender and slut-shaming' - Katherine Woodfine, bestselling author of The Sinclair's Mysteries Laura Steven is an author, journalist and screenwriter from the northernmost town in England. She has an MA in Creative Writing and works at a non-profit organisation supporting women in the creative arts. Her TV pilot, Clickbait, was a finalist in British Comedy's 2016 Sitcom Mission. The Exact Opposite of Okay is her first book for young adults.

Finished this last night for #thebreakfastbookclub #groupa! @erinreads I didn‘t realize this was your original pick before I packaged it up to be sent to you tomorrow! Good pick! I don‘t think the British humor fit in with the American high school setting but otherwise a solid book!

Hell yeah!
I wanna go slap a "nice guy in the friend zone" and burn down something created by sexist white man.

But legit this is a HILARIOUS, honest and modern plot about a girl getting slut shamed for having a vagina and using it. For reals, I don't like contemporaries but this has a really satisfying ending...and I wanna go burn down the patriarchy now.

THE FRIEND ZONE ISNT THE WORST PLACE YOU COULD'VE ENDED UP! WE DONT OWE YOU SHIT!

I think I‘ve posted this book before, on a similar theme. This is about mistakes made on social media and I‘m just so glad I grew up before all of that - in my opinion it‘s #toomuchtooyoung.

Okay let's just get this out in the open:
1. the US cover looks like a zipper vagina while the UK got a gorgeous design.
2. *gasp* omg Samm is voluntarily reading a contemporary?!

Well my friend DMed me and told me someone had basically written a more sexually promiscuous version of me (sarcasm and anti-Trump sentiment included). I'm only 100 pages in and we've already taken two shots at POTUS Agent Orange.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I had to go to book depository to check out British cover...YES, much nicer!! Sounds like a great read! 5y

This book just goes to show how social media can ruin a persons life when the people you think you can trust can't be trusted. When compromising pictures of Izzy shows up on a website slut shaming her, her who life changes. My heart broke for Izzy and women in today's world who this happens too. It is not okay at all. We shouldn't have to worry about this at all!

This is what #modernlove means to me; it‘s about the chaos and recriminations that ensue when someone posts a compromising photo on social media.

I‘m just glad I did my growing up before the internet!

This is one time when you *should* judge a book by its cover. This is an explosive, colourful, fast-paced (and sweary) look at what happens to a teenage girl when a nude photo she sent to a boy goes viral.

My only issue would be that it felt a bit rushed at the end and I would have liked a bit more after the MC found out who had started it all and how that affected them and their friends. (Being cryptic as trying not to drop a spoiler!)

This was a great choice for #bookclubYA - loads to talk about, from the central theme of revenge porn and manipulative relationships, to the friendship betrayals and the main character's sassy, filthy-mouthed grandmother! I‘m not a massive contemporary lover but I seriously love this book. The first 100 pages or so were quite slow for me and I was thinking about giving up but I am so so glad I didn‘t. Once I hit that 100 page mark I couldn‘t put this down. A fantastic message behind a hilarious, flawed and unapologetic protagonist. Highly recommend. #YA #Contemporary #feminist #4Stars

I didn‘t know what to think of this at first - the teenage dialogue and the constant jokes were a little off putting. But, Steven constructs a story with various layers, bringing to light challenges faced and the disparity of perceived behaviors between boys and girls. I ended up really liking it. Read this for #thebreakfastbookclub #GroupA . @corycatelyn , this should be going out to you tomorrow!

I thought this was really great, thanks for bringing to the book swap @daydreamin_star
It examines 'slut shaming' and revenge porn, and the double standards for women
The character of Izzy had a really strong voice, using her humour as a shield. I will definitely pick up the next book when it's out.

Laura Steven‘s debut YA contemporary novel is a feminist polemic against toxic masculinity, revenge porn and slut-shaming but while I cheered its feminism and liked the fact that Izzy is not perfect and has real money worries, Ajita exists only so Izzy can learn from making mistakes at her expense while a disabled character exists solely to bolster Izzy‘s self-esteem and the men are almost all creeps while the humour just didn‘t work for me.

I've been really struggling to finish books lately. I keep starting them and then picking up a new book instead of finishing the last. Which means I am in the middle of so many stories right now. Has anyone else had this issue before?

Missusb Just a comment after finishing. I found the trauma of Izzy‘s situation (victim of revenge porn) was maybe a little derailed by the humour. Yeah it was funny, but gosh, not sure we should all be laughing so much. On the other hand, Izzy gets to react any way she wants. But it‘s a timely story. (edited) 7y

“A timely, important debut that should be added to school libraries across the world. It's unabashedly feminist. It's hilarious. It's also heart-breaking—sometimes switching from one to the other in just the space of a few lines. Although this book is about some fairly heavy stuff, Steven does a great job of balancing it out with humor, hard-won character development, and a message that made me cheer loudly on public transport” – Christine Herman
