Kicking off #readathon with this - I'm halfway through so I'd love to finish it today!
Kicking off #readathon with this - I'm halfway through so I'd love to finish it today!
Vivi Conway is a grumpy autistic girl who knows enough about myths, legends and magic to not be surprised when a lake starts calling her, but is still rather displeased to learn she's been chosen by ancient powers to save the world.
Delightful characters, plot engaging and a bit scary (peril of the more-than-mild kind) and I laughed out loud multiple times. A++++ will read again, buy it for the kids in your life and treat yoself too.
A collection of mini essays about life in a city, local activism, improv, and charades. It has left me longing for the time to do more improv classes. I did an improv course a few years ago and it was great fun, like being back in drama at school.
Mandy Baggot is one of my favourite Christmas authors, her characters are always so charming, vivid and real! When small-town truck driver Lara's boyfriend tells her he wants to go on a break, her best friend Susie whisks her away for a festive visit to NYC. There she meets actor Seth, who gets swept into her plan to explore the city and find out how much more she can be. Meanwhile she encourages him to discover more of his own identity...
Finally getting properly going on #readathon after some little bursts of reading earlier in the day! #historical #historicalromance #georgetteheyer
Inspired by Estella and Miss Havisham from Great Expectations, this is a story of sibling obsession and the ultimate popularity contest at a boarding school. Although sometimes I thought it was a tad unrealistic, I enjoyed this. Definitely one for YA fans who like their books to be full of bitchiness and drama #readathon
First print book read for #readathon! This is an old proof copy from Stripes, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. It's a gripping and interesting thriller about a girl who remembers everything...or does she?
I loved this one - it's about Lizzie, who decides to reinvent herself when she starts college, and is thrilled when the impossibly cool Viv asks her to join her band. Trouble is, she's never played bass before, and it turns out cool girls aren't necessarily also kind...
It's fun and thoughtful, exploring the power of friendships, both good and bad.
I'm joining the #Read22ForRefugees challenge to help raise money for Refugee Action from 9-30 September!
To reach the UK, refugees are forced to travel 22 dangerous miles across the Channel. To join this 22-day challenge, set yourself a reading challenge around the number 22 - pages, books, or minutes per day. Message Martha (@martha_is_reading) or Eve (@e.f.paterson) on Instagram to get involved. I'm going to read a book every day!
I decided to read as many books as I can this weekend and started with this one, a story about a boy whose 'imaginary friend' is suspected of various crimes. He has to prove her innocence in order to save his imagination from the Cosh - a permanent treatment. Thanks to the publisher for giving me a copy back in 2014...anyone else trying to catch up on their TBR? 😀
Read another short story, then started this collection of three graphic novels. The first two are re-reads and I have waited for about a decade for the third to come out so I am really excited to finally get to read it. I got about halfway through the whole collection before bed, will finish the rest tomorrow! #readathon
First complete book read for #readathon! I really enjoyed this verse novel from the perspective of Michael, who is mixed-race, queer, and figuring out how to express himself. It starts off when he is in primary school and follows him through secondary school and off to university in Brighton. It's a very quick read, being a verse novel, and beautifully designed with different backgrounds behind the writing, and some illustrations too.
One story done from Get in Trouble, I'm now on to what I hope will be my first whole book of #readathon!
Beginning with this! Planning to finish the story I'm currently on then start something else. #readathon @DeweysReadathon
Got my TBR ready for @DeweysReadathon! I have tried to balance text-heavy with less text-heavy books to make it realistic but we'll see how it goes! Who else is taking part today? #readathon #Deweys24HourReadathon
I couldn't record any YouTube videos for months due to renovating my new house and it was AGONY. One good thing about the lockdown is that it's given me the extra time I needed to catch up! This photo was taken while I was filming my December 2019 Wrap-Up, which you can watch on my YouTube channel via the link in my profile. Are there any other booktubers on here? I need more people to follow!
I enjoyed this but it was very much like the film adapation, which I saw first and I think I preferred. Momoko is devoted to all things Lolita fashion and rococo and has almost no interest in anything else. To get more money to buy clothes, she submits a newspaper ad for her gangster father's leftover counterfeits. Ichigo, a committed Yanki, a Lolita's polar opposite, responds, and despite Momoko's resistance they develop a friendship...
I can't stop thinking about how perfect a children's book this is. Tally gets a scholarship to a boarding school shortly before the Second World War. She expects it to be horrible and strict, but it's a weird and wonderful progressive school and she fits right in. On a trip to the Kingdom of Berania she meets lonely Prince Karil whomTally and her friends have to save from the Nazis. Every character is a delight to read and it was so much fun!
It's been a while, Littens! I hope everyone is doing okay in this weird new world we're living in. To cheer myself up I'm taking part in the #PositiviTeaAndBooks readathon, and starting with this, which I started a few days ago. I'm going to listen while I make sweet potato curry for dinner and drink some apple tea. What are you eating tonight?
I was supposed to be writing today but I'm all on edge and distracted and the story isn't coming out right. So reading it is! This is a horror story about a girl who moves to a spooky new town.
My March #illumicrate unboxing is up on my YouTube channel now! I tried filming it a different way (much more of my face!) so I'd love to know what you think - the link is in my profile. It was a great box and I'm so excited to read the book. I may even get to it this very month!
I thought this was non-fiction when I picked it up as the blurb does not make it clear it's a short story collection! Whoops! Hopefully I'll still enjoy it...
I love the author's non-fiction books so I was really intrigued to try this and see how her ideas come across in fiction. So intrigued I requested it on NetGalley despite having pre-ordered it 😄
But although I enjoyed it, I thought that the main character was an odd choice. She's a very driven and ambitious consultant, already out of the ordinary. A more normal overwhelmed person might be more relatable for most readers.
This was brilliant! By turns funny, serious, thoughtful and silly, I loved spending time in Phoebe and Luke's first-term-of-university world as they make and break friends and hearts. Highly recommended. I want to go re-read Tom and Lucy's other two books now!
After finishing Giant Days I wanted more British university comedy so I grabbed this copy of Freshers that @yayeahyeah lent me about 100 years ago (okay, two, it came out in 2017). So far it has not disappointed me. I‘m only on page 70 and I've done many giggles and three loud cackles!
My January and February combined wrap-up blog post and video is up! Visit the link in my profile to click through to my blog or YouTube channel and out what I thought about all the books I read in the first two months of 2019 💜📚
Despite having really enjoyed Non Pratt's previous novels (especially Remix) and being a big fan of Giant Days, I didn't know what to expect from a tie-in novel for a comic series. I worried that it wouldn't quite capture the magic, but I need not have been concerned as it did a remarkably good job at capturing the Giant Days spirit. It's not the same, but it's entertaining and moving and I hope it'll lead to more fans for both Giant Days and Non!
I meant to read a few pages of this over breakfast but haven't been able to put it down! It's about a girl who literally turns invisible after three boys at her school hound her into completely deleting her internet presence. The other point of view comes from one of those boys, who is torn between wanting to help her and wanting to fit in with the only people who have ever wanted him as a friend. It's very creepy and thoughtful.
I absolutely loved this story of a woman who never understood the world and how to fit in until she got a job at a convenience store, a bright, regulated world, ever-changing but predictable, with stock phrases and an employee manual, comforting and safe. I can't wait to discuss it at my work book club, but I will have to, as the next meeting isn't until April 😭
I just finished reading this book about the reality and consequences of fame. The subtitle and cover image is as lurid as the press depictions he criticises, he can be very judgemental, and the examples are all a little dated (it was published in 2002) but it was interesting. I especially liked the chapter on celebrities who are more comfortable with fame and have used it to further good causes, like Dolly Parton and Steven Spielberg.
And this is my other book club book this month, also from the library. How to be Both is actually a really beat-up hardback but it looks deceptively good in this photo! I picked it up a couple of weeks ago and we had the book club meeting today. Most people liked it but didn't think it was particularly memorable.
Have you borrowed any good library books recently?
I'm delighted to have been able to find both books for my book clubs this month at my local library!
All the Lonely People is this month's #bookclubYA pick and when I had a peek inside I saw a Leslie Knope quote so I had to get out the Funko! It's brand new, I found it waiting for me on the new books display. If you're in London and fancy reading it and joining us for the discussion, it's on 28th February from 6pm at Waterstones Piccadilly.
Laughed out loud at this paragraph. Stella Gibbons was amazing at describing her characters; somehow both generous and merciless.
Happy New Year Littens! I absolutely smashed it out of the park with my new books read goal in 2018, thanks to audiobooks and some graphic novels and comics!
My 2019 goal is 80, as I always set it at one more book than I read in the previous year. Now to see if I want to do any themed challenges, when all the readathons are, and sort out the first challenges for #theunreadshelfproject2019!
I am enjoying this book so much! From the charmless but relatable (at least to us bookworms) protagonist, who just wants to be left alone with her books and her thoughts, to the entertaining and wry descriptions of those who take an interest in her and their intentions, I love it!
I didn't make a TBR for readathon so after I finished my first print book I had no idea what to read next. I decided to let Litsy decide! I scrolled through the #readathon hashtag hoping to find someone had mentioned a book on my shelves. I scrolled for ages and couldn't see anything, but @Daisey had mentioned Cold Comfort Farm so I went hunting and found this by the same author! Such a pretty cover! I hope the book is as good!
Started this on audiobook! I have a print copy somewhere I think but it's less than eight hours so perfect for when I need to use my hands during #readathon.
First book finished for #readathon! I actually started this back in August but didn't make it past Part 1 - as soon as I was onto Part 2 this time around I was gripped. I love reading about destructive toxic friendships and this was no exception to that rule. Nora Tobias is a serial liar, manipulating to get her way. Then she starts to build a friendship with glamourous, dangerous, aspiring actress Bel - until she decides she wants what Bel has...
This was a great choice for #bookclubYA - loads to talk about, from the central theme of revenge porn and manipulative relationships, to the friendship betrayals and the main character's sassy, filthy-mouthed grandmother! I really enjoyed reading it and I'm looking forward to seeing what this author does next. #YA #youngadult
Received this stunning hardback from Orbit Books - isn't it beautiful? Anyone read it yet? #SistersoftheWinterWood
September is nearly over so it's a good thing I've finally posted my Short Books September #sbksept TBR video! Link in my profile.
The Famous (or is it Fatuous) Five go on a strategy away day featuring competitive team building exercises in order to ideate, move forward and create synergy. Will they get through the day without murdering each other? How long will Julian's hangover last? And can they get one up on the Secret Seven?
I enjoyed Five on Brexit Island but I loved this! It was laugh out loud funny and I'd recommend it to all corporate away day survivors! #sbksept
First #sbksept book! I started this yesterday at breakfast and it is hilarious. Hoping to finish it at lunch today!
My favourite book so far this year. Tess is a runaway, a girl walking down a road, seeking a reason to keep going, processing trauma and coming to terms with her patriarchal society and religious upbringing. It's a fantasy novel with very little fast-paced action but I was gripped. It's sad, hopeful, devastating, magical and beautiful. Best enjoyed after Seraphina and Shadow Scale so you understand the context.
Okay Littens, here it is, my 2018 #sbksept TBR! Some books were on my 2017 TBR but I have a few new ones too! Plenty of choice - what do you think I should start with? What should I make sure to read this time around? If you want to join in with Short Books September just grab some short books (under 250 pages) from your shelves, share a picture and start reading! More info (and a funny video) at the link in my profile.
Did some reading in a park yesterday - I love how this bright cover stood out against the grass in the sun! I plan to go to a different park today and get some more reading in. Are you reading al fresco this weekend?
This came yesterday, my next book club read! I'm in two book clubs now, one at work and one that meets in a big central London Waterstones, #bookclubYA. I had to take some photos to help promote #bookclubYA on social media and I'm glad they came out well - the cover illustration is amazing! #YA #youngadult
