I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

#Zeke #Vladimir #SebastianKitty #Xander #CatsOfLitsy

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 3w
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 3w
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know! Maybe it was Manderley‘s spell…we just could not remember all of the bad. 😂 3w

I did it! While there were chapters that I did not understand the significance of, I overall liked this novel. I know, unpopular opinion! Dostoevsky examines good versus evil, religious ideology, love and hate, and family. There are the struggles to conform to a given mindset, to break away from familial ideals, to resist temptation. Dostoevsky longwindedly dissects religion - what is belief, what does it mean to follow the church, and, through ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️…the eyes of Aloysha, how to live a life with the church‘s teachings. There, of course, is the murder, so as the book progresses, there‘s also that underlying thought on justice. What is justice? During the trial, the long chapters from the lawyers provide a very in depth look at interpretations of justice. They‘re long, but also remarkable in the way the facts are twisted and manipulated for the spectators. I‘m glad I read this, as it‘s been ⬇️ 2mo
Librarybelle ⬆️…on my tbr. Russian literature is intimidating, and anytime I read it, I have to be in the right mindset…it can get so dark and dense so very quickly. This was my first time reading Dostoevsky; I‘m not going to run out and read Crime and Punishment anytime soon, but I will some day! Thanks to #PemberLittens and our fearless #HashtagBrigade leader @BarkingMadRead for taking us through daily. While I liked this, the daily chapter reading was ⬇️ 2mo
Librarybelle ⬆️…exactly what I needed to power through the book. Let‘s just say I read a good portion of War and Peace and lost momentum…I need to get back to it! Pro tip: this is probably not the best book to read upon waking up, but yet I did. #Zeke and #Xander gladly kept me company, as they are in this photo. #CatsOfLitsy 😁 2mo

batsy Nice review! This is one of my favourites, but it's incredibly dense 😅 C&P moves along at quite a fast pace at times, so definitely not as dense as this one (but still pretty dense, it is Dostoevsky after all 😂) 2mo
Librarybelle Thanks, @batsy ! I‘ll get to C&P one of these days!!! 2mo
BarkingMadRead I think it was way too long, and often ridiculous, but I didn‘t mind it. It just took for freaking ever 🤣 2mo
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead The Russians authors like to take their time telling a story! 😂 2mo

Billypar Long road indeed! 👏 👏 👏 👏 I second @batsy 's contrast between TBK and C&P. I read both a really long time ago, but C&P was like a thriller at times, which couldn't be further from TBK. I also really liked Notes From Underground, which isn't much like either of the others, so I guess he liked to switch things up? 🤷🏻 2mo
Librarybelle @Billypar Thanks for the info! I‘m unfamiliar with Notes from Underground, so I‘ll have to investigate that. Maybe I‘ll make it a point to read C&P next winter…it might be a good book to read during the dark evenings! 2mo

When most of your library holds arrive at the same time, it takes a pretty strong bag to make it back to the car. Does anyone else like to gaze at the books you pick up at the library, especially the new ones you know you‘re the first to get, or is it just me???

The books have been thoroughly examined, as Zeke is showing. Any recommendations on the first to read from the stack? #Zeke #CatsOfLitsy #libraryhaul

RaeLovesToRead Hi Zeke!!! 👋🏻😄💕 2mo

CatLass007 Hello gorgeous 😻😻😻! Is Zeke a dilute calico or am I seeing three colors where there are only two? 2mo
CatLass007 Also, the books all look amazing. Have you decided which to read first? I‘m taking a screenshot so I can make sure to add these to my wish list. I think most of them are already on my list. 2mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 Zeke is gray and white. The setting sun may be playing with his color scheme, as some of his gray spots do look like a lighter gray or neutral color on spots on his legs. No clue which to read first! I actually have other books due this coming week I should get to before this stack. 😂 2mo
CatLass007 He‘s still gorgeous. Enjoy whatever you read. 2mo
CatLass007 As a native West Virginian, I‘m most intrigued by In the Shadow of the Greenbrier. It‘s now at the top of my wish list. 2mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 I‘m actually leaning towards that one…I had not heard of the significance of Greenbrier until I was in college. It‘s so intriguing, and I‘m glad to see a fictional story centered on Greenbrier. 2mo
CatLass007 I‘ve never been to The Greenbrier but my Dad worked there now and then. He had two fine Greenbrier mugs and now they‘re mine. He had a mid weight jacket from there too. I think that was donated to charity. We didn‘t even live near there but Daddy did a lot of traveling before he met Mom and has fond memories of the place. There‘s a fallout shelter under the hotel that could house a lot of government officials if there were an emergency. (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 Of course it‘s no longer a secret but it‘s still fascinating. I saw it on a documentary several years ago. The mugs and jacket were a 21st century addition to my Dad‘s collection. 2mo
Librarybelle What an awesome connection, @CatLass007 ! I had heard of the fallout shelter too from a documentary. 2mo
CatLass007 Daddy traveled all over the country but he came back to his home town, which is my hometown. I no longer live in West Virginia and I won‘t ever move back there but visiting family isn‘t out of the question. Mom wasn‘t from West Virginia. She moved there for her first job after her dietetic internship. Not a lot of women in her generation went to college and had a career, but she did. Wow, I may be getting homesick… 2mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 🙂❤️ 2mo
Jess I‘m quite interested in The Tower. If you get to that one, let us know what you think. Enjoy! 2mo
Librarybelle Will do, @Jess . Thanks! 2mo
Crazeedi I thought I was the only one to have a pile of 10 plus books I just borrowed, not like I don't have hundreds on my shelves tbr!! Lol 2mo
Crazeedi And I always go to the new books rack first, that sits by the check out counter, hehehe!!! 2mo
Librarybelle @Crazeedi Yes! New shelf scoping is the best stop at the library! 2mo
Crazeedi @Librarybelle 🥰❤️ 2mo

This was a fun romance with layers of humor & danger, not to mention some heavy topics. I liked Cohen‘s weaving of Austen novels into the story. There were times Vicky drove me a little crazy, but given the situation she faced from her family - having to #BiteTheBullet and marry - I‘ll give her a little leeway. Very charming. Thanks for hosting, @StayCurious ! #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent

Finally getting back to the tagged book - a copy finally came in again for me through the library! Highly recommended for ‘90s music enthusiasts!

I‘m attempting my #hyggehour an hour earlier than 8pm…it‘s a bit easier on my evening routine to unwind a bit earlier. Hope that‘s okay! I‘ve got my weighted blanket and #Zeke resting against me. A candle is burning in the background, and cell phone on silent. #CatsofLitsy

I was not so sure about this when I read the first chapter, but as I progressed in this book, I found I had to keep reading. A mystery bookshop amongst Colorado skiing, with a family named Christie (no relation that they know of) as the proprietors? Lots of Christie tidbits thrown in, which were fun to see. I guessed some parts of the mystery, but not all of it. I‘d definitely read the next in the series. Zeke agrees! #Zeke #CatsOfLitsy

Definitely not as enjoyable as Last Summer at the Golden Hotel! While I appreciated the references to ‘90s pop culture (this is my era, though the characters are a tad older than me), I was not fully enamored with any of the MCs. As the book progressed, I found I was more frustrated than anything with their stories. Spoiler comment below that had me rolling my eyes. At least I finished this with #Zeke resting on me. #CatsOfLitsy #SundayBuddyRead

Librarybelle The fight between the 4 of them near the end of the book was ridiculous to me. Were they just getting out their frustrations on each other? It became a bit too personal. It was almost like the author felt the need for them to clear the air amongst themselves for some reason. It was a pretty weak part, in my mind. 8mo

Murder, She Wrote: Death on the Emerald Isle | Terrie Farley Moran, Jessica Fletcher

Jessica Fletcher is asked to go to Northern Ireland to deliver family heirlooms to her neighbor‘s family. Of course, when Jessica appears anywhere, murder happens. I greatly enjoyed the descriptions of the landscape in this addition to the series. The mystery was good - I suspected the killer towards the end of the book. Great distraction reading; #Zeke and #Xander agree! #CatsOfLitsy

A reread for me and finished up this morning with #Zeke . This is a good start to the Bookmobile Cat mystery series, featuring a librarian, her cat, and murder, and a bookmobile. What I appreciate most is the setting in Michigan and the descriptions used - I‘ve never been to Michigan, but I could envision the town and the countryside. It was fun to revisit this book for my IRL cozy mystery book discussion. #CatsOfLitsy
