A whispering statue that looks like Nancy Drew. A collection of rare books that are involved in a swindle. Nancy again has two mysteries to solve, going undercover to collect the clues. This one is much better than the prior book in the series. And, like Bess, I really want a fudge sundae now.

Discussion tomorrow; questions will be posted mid- to late morning East Coast time. #NancyDrewBR

CogsOfEncouragement I thought about skipping it this month since the last couple had been duds and maybe I would be better off spending more time with a festive romcom but so glad I decided to stay the course! I‘m halfway thru and enjoying this one. 3d
Librarybelle @CogsOfEncouragement I know what you mean! This one was really good. Maybe the last two were just duds??? 3d
DGRachel Ugh. I‘ve been sick with pneumonia and haven‘t read a word in 4 days. I may have to sit this one out. Figures it would be good this time. 😭 3d

The Finishing Stroke | Ellery Queen
post image
Pickpick

My first time reading an Ellery Queen mystery & it won‘t be the last. There were twists in this one that I did not see coming. The premise too—twelve days of Christmas, twelve gifts with a sinister undertone—is a perfect recipe for a mystery. If this were a modern day mystery, I could see the suspense playing out even more in really twisted ways.

I took this picture earlier today. #Zeke is doing very well! The meds are working! #CatsOfLitsy

Not a book-related post, but please send special thoughts for Zeke. A couple years ago, he had pancreatitis. In the last two days, he has started to exhibit the same symptoms. When he refuses yummies, you know it‘s bad.

We go to the vet this afternoon. He‘s 13 and has lost a lot of weight the last couple of days.

I love all of my cats, but Zeke has been with me since I found him in my car as a 6-8 week old. He‘s special. #catsoflitsy #zeke

Librarybelle Update: Zeke has irritation in his belly, as when the vet checked she could feel him tense. The good news is I caught things early enough to try a few rounds of antibiotics, appetite stimulant, and anti-nausea medication to see if the inflammation can go down. He has already asked for a little bit of food, which is progress and the hope at this stage. May it continue! Thanks for the well wishes!! I‘m cautiously optimistic at this point. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 2w

I really enjoyed this first in the Shardlake series. I‘m fascinated by the Tudor era, and Sansom captures so much about the corruption from both sides during the dissolution of the Catholic monasteries in Henry VIII‘d reign. I liked Shardlake, whose hard attitude helps his methodical mind process information. A great mystery too! #ShardlakeBR #CatsOfLitsy #Vladimir #Zeke

I needed a super-fast read and a palate cleanser…Charlie and Diesel were the perfect choice!

A nasty, cruel boss, terrible department heads, and murders keep Charlie and Diesel pretty busy at the library. Sad to say a few characteristics of the murder victim are characteristics I witnessed in my library career. Yikes! Great character progression, and another good series entry!

Most of my sidekicks hovered in the background as I finished it.

Mehso-so

Admittedly, I almost stopped reading this one after the first couple of chapters - the actions of the main character just completely baffled me, and the response of those actions by law enforcement seemed completely wrong. Cozies are not meant to be real life, but this seemed over the top even for a cozy. The narrative did get better as the story progressed. Lots of suspects and mystery elements, plus a secondary mystery. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️The ending was pretty dramatic, a true nail biter. So-so read in the end for me. I received a copy of this from #NetGalley , so thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, and I had found a physical copy of the book along the way. #Zeke and #Xander are clearly ready for bed! #CatsOfLitsy 7mo

Another great addition in the series, and a perfect palate cleansing read. Charlie and Diesel are entangled in a diary and secrets that date back to the American Civil War. The bonus short story, in which Charlie finds Diesel at the library, reminded me of my real life rescue of Zeke from my car engine at the library so long ago. I made #Zeke model for the picture! #CatsOfLitsy

I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

#Zeke #Vladimir #SebastianKitty #Xander #CatsOfLitsy

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 8mo
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 8mo

I did it! While there were chapters that I did not understand the significance of, I overall liked this novel. I know, unpopular opinion! Dostoevsky examines good versus evil, religious ideology, love and hate, and family. There are the struggles to conform to a given mindset, to break away from familial ideals, to resist temptation. Dostoevsky longwindedly dissects religion - what is belief, what does it mean to follow the church, and, through ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️…the eyes of Aloysha, how to live a life with the church‘s teachings. There, of course, is the murder, so as the book progresses, there‘s also that underlying thought on justice. What is justice? During the trial, the long chapters from the lawyers provide a very in depth look at interpretations of justice. They‘re long, but also remarkable in the way the facts are twisted and manipulated for the spectators. I‘m glad I read this, as it‘s been ⬇️ 8mo
Librarybelle ⬆️…on my tbr. Russian literature is intimidating, and anytime I read it, I have to be in the right mindset…it can get so dark and dense so very quickly. This was my first time reading Dostoevsky; I‘m not going to run out and read Crime and Punishment anytime soon, but I will some day! Thanks to #PemberLittens and our fearless #HashtagBrigade leader @BarkingMadRead for taking us through daily. While I liked this, the daily chapter reading was ⬇️ 8mo
Librarybelle ⬆️…exactly what I needed to power through the book. Let‘s just say I read a good portion of War and Peace and lost momentum…I need to get back to it! Pro tip: this is probably not the best book to read upon waking up, but yet I did. #Zeke and #Xander gladly kept me company, as they are in this photo. #CatsOfLitsy 😁 8mo

batsy Nice review! This is one of my favourites, but it's incredibly dense 😅 C&P moves along at quite a fast pace at times, so definitely not as dense as this one (but still pretty dense, it is Dostoevsky after all 😂) 8mo
Librarybelle Thanks, @batsy ! I‘ll get to C&P one of these days!!! 8mo
BarkingMadRead I think it was way too long, and often ridiculous, but I didn‘t mind it. It just took for freaking ever 🤣 8mo

Billypar Long road indeed! 👏 👏 👏 👏 I second @batsy 's contrast between TBK and C&P. I read both a really long time ago, but C&P was like a thriller at times, which couldn't be further from TBK. I also really liked Notes From Underground, which isn't much like either of the others, so I guess he liked to switch things up? 🤷🏻 8mo
Librarybelle @Billypar Thanks for the info! I‘m unfamiliar with Notes from Underground, so I‘ll have to investigate that. Maybe I‘ll make it a point to read C&P next winter…it might be a good book to read during the dark evenings! 8mo

When most of your library holds arrive at the same time, it takes a pretty strong bag to make it back to the car. Does anyone else like to gaze at the books you pick up at the library, especially the new ones you know you‘re the first to get, or is it just me???

The books have been thoroughly examined, as Zeke is showing. Any recommendations on the first to read from the stack? #Zeke #CatsOfLitsy #libraryhaul

CatLass007 Hello gorgeous 😻😻😻! Is Zeke a dilute calico or am I seeing three colors where there are only two? 9mo
CatLass007 Also, the books all look amazing. Have you decided which to read first? I‘m taking a screenshot so I can make sure to add these to my wish list. I think most of them are already on my list. 9mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 Zeke is gray and white. The setting sun may be playing with his color scheme, as some of his gray spots do look like a lighter gray or neutral color on spots on his legs. No clue which to read first! I actually have other books due this coming week I should get to before this stack. 😂 9mo
CatLass007 He‘s still gorgeous. Enjoy whatever you read. 9mo
CatLass007 As a native West Virginian, I‘m most intrigued by In the Shadow of the Greenbrier. It‘s now at the top of my wish list. 9mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 I‘m actually leaning towards that one…I had not heard of the significance of Greenbrier until I was in college. It‘s so intriguing, and I‘m glad to see a fictional story centered on Greenbrier. 9mo
CatLass007 I‘ve never been to The Greenbrier but my Dad worked there now and then. He had two fine Greenbrier mugs and now they‘re mine. He had a mid weight jacket from there too. I think that was donated to charity. We didn‘t even live near there but Daddy did a lot of traveling before he met Mom and has fond memories of the place. There‘s a fallout shelter under the hotel that could house a lot of government officials if there were an emergency. (cont)⬇️ 9mo
CatLass007 Of course it‘s no longer a secret but it‘s still fascinating. I saw it on a documentary several years ago. The mugs and jacket were a 21st century addition to my Dad‘s collection. 9mo
Librarybelle What an awesome connection, @CatLass007 ! I had heard of the fallout shelter too from a documentary. 9mo
CatLass007 Daddy traveled all over the country but he came back to his home town, which is my hometown. I no longer live in West Virginia and I won‘t ever move back there but visiting family isn‘t out of the question. Mom wasn‘t from West Virginia. She moved there for her first job after her dietetic internship. Not a lot of women in her generation went to college and had a career, but she did. Wow, I may be getting homesick… 9mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 🙂❤️ 9mo
Jess I‘m quite interested in The Tower. If you get to that one, let us know what you think. Enjoy! 9mo
Librarybelle Will do, @Jess . Thanks! 9mo
