I really enjoyed this story. It was original and a different take on a zombie apocalypse than any I‘ve ever read. The ending was a little too abrupt for my liking. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie Do you think the son got cured? 2y

Not a favorite of mine but still an interesting read/listen. I assumed this was a straight “cell phones turn people into zombies” story but really seemed more about cells making people hive-minded, telepathic sort of people who also are kind of like zombies? But can communicate? And I‘m not sure if I missed why this happened and the ending was so open it just felt slightly unsatisfying. Still entertaining though! 🌟🌟🌟#scarathlon #teamslaughter

I read as part of the monthly #losersclub. If you liked The Stand, you may enjoy this as well. Comments below with spoiler tag. 😀

Sparklemn I liked this and would recommend but it‘s hard to beat The Stand. This has a lot of similarities, but for me, it paled by comparison. I just couldn‘t quite connect with Clay. I enjoyed Tom much more. Maybe because he cared so much for his cat? 😜🐱💙 2y
Sparklemn The ending didn‘t bother me. Yes, I would have liked to learn if the second “pulse” healed his son, but I was fine with it being left open. 2y
Sparklemn I‘m not clear on why just this group was identified as “insane” when there had to have been others who attacked the flocks. 2y
See All 10 Comments
KathyWheeler @Sparklemn They did run into another group, who joined them, who was also identified as “insane” for the same reason. I assumed word spread. I was annoyed by the lack of women. Were they limited on the number of women? It was as if there could be only one. Alice, who was with Clay and Tom, died not long after they met the group with Denise, who had to survive because she was pregnant. That said, I still liked Cell. Not as much as The Stand though. 2y
Sparklemn @KathyWheeler Good note on the lack of women. I hadn't really thought about it until you pointed it out. (edited) 2y
KathyWheeler @Sparklemn The thing is, I‘ve read this book before and seen the movie, but I didn‘t notice it until this reread. I also hadn‘t noticed the similarities to The Stand until now. (edited) 2y
Sparklemn @KathyWheeler Didn't realize there was a movie. 11% on Rotten Tomatoes...sounds so bad it might be good! 😁 2y
KathyWheeler @Sparklemn I did not hate the movie. I don‘t remember it being outstanding but I also don‘t remember it being awful either. I like John Cusak and he plays Clay. 2y
Sparklemn @KathyWheeler And Samuel L. Jackson! I‘m looking forward to watching it sometime. Thanks for letting me know about it! 2y
KathyWheeler @Sparklemn you‘re welcome. I hope you don‘t hate it. 2y

HeathHof @Sparklemn My apologies! This is the discussion post, I just updated it in hopes of clarification. What did you think of Cell? 2y
HeathHof @BarkingMadRun @ErinSueMreads anyone else that read this one want to jump in on the discussion? 2y
BarkingMadRead I thought it had some similarities to the Stand, which is my fave. 2y
Sparklemn @HeathHof I enjoyed Cell but not nearly as much as The Stand. I found the Harvard character more amusing than scary. I liked the relationships that developed between the characters in such a short time. (edited) 2y
HeathHof I agree about it having some similarities but enjoyed the fact that it was very much it's own. I think the MC's were sweet. (Although I kept wondering if one of them were going to go off the deep end &Alice drove me a little nuts with her incessant shoe squishing tick.) What did you all imagine caused the pulse? @Sparklemn @BarkingMadRun 2y
Erinsuereads I at first felt like it was a knock off of the the stand but it really grew on me. The thing that stuck with me the most was the ending though. I think it's crazy that Stephen king has us all so brainwashed that he can write an ending like that and we could assume the thing works and it all ends up being okay. That's completely safe because there is no indication is doesn't. But we all know better.....damn the man. 2y

There were too many unresolved subplots and too many things were left unexplained. I also didn‘t like the ending. The pace of the story was good, and the tension and sense of danger kept things interesting. This definitely isn‘t one of his best works, though.

Graphic artist Clay Riddell was in the heart of Boston on that brilliant autumn afternoon when hell was unleashed before his eyes. Without warning, carnage and chaos reigned. Ordinary people fell victim to the basest, most animalistic destruction.
And the apocalypse began with the ring of a cell phone...
Cuts straight to the choas & enjoyed the characters. Wanted to know more at end! Lengthy details got me at points but I read a lot of YA🤷🏻‍♀️

For me, this book was okay. It had its moments and I liked the idea; but the ending was disappointing for me. One thing I will say about this that is different from most of King‘s books is that the action started right away. Typically there is more character and setting development before you get to the creepy stuff. That sucked me into the book quicker than most of his novels.

My husband completely enriched my life (🙄) and introduced me to this Yanny/Laurel business this evening. It brought to mind Cell by Stephen King, where “The Pulse” comes through cell phones and either kills you or transforms you. So, I‘m fully expecting to wake up to a horde of zombies tomorrow. And I‘ve heard both “Yanny” and “Laurel” when I‘ve listened, so I‘m either immune or I will be the Zombie Overlord. 🧟‍♀️ Godspeed, my friends! 😂

TheWordJar @L_auren @cobwebmoth @Bostonmomx2 My husband has been walking around the house with his phone all night telling me where in the house it sounds like Yanny and where it sounds like Laurel. I think this is how his descent into insanity (or the zombie apocalypse) begins! 😂 6y

TheWordJar @AmyG Yanny creeps me out. The Laurel voice, which I heard first, is much lower. When I finally heard Yanny (and that‘s all I can hear now), it sounded a bit like some horror movie monster. I can‘t listen anymore!!! 😂🤣🤪 6y

Total blood fest. Very creative imagery and action scenes. Similiar to Simon Clark's 'Blood Crazy' in how a certain category of people transform almost instantaneously from average joes to insane killers and than form a sort of collective consciousness. King imagines up a world in which all cell phone users go berserk.
Definitely recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in getting some modern day thrills and chills.

Cell is an awesome character-driven story. There is no other way to say it. Sure, there are crazies (phoners) running around...literally, but this story is centered around the main characters and their struggle. That's what I love about King's works. If you haven't read it, read it.
