Dracula (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)
Dracula (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) | Bram Stoker, EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, Bram Stroker
"Dracula," by Bram Stoker, is part of the "Barnes & Noble Classics"" "series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of "Barnes & Noble Classics": New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars Biographies of the authors Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events Footnotes and endnotes Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work Comments by other famous authors Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations Bibliographies for further reading Indices & Glossaries, when appropriateAll editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. "Barnes & Noble Classics "pulls together a constellation of influences--biographical, historical, and literary--to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works."" "Count Dracula" has inspired countless movies, books, and plays. But few, if any, have been fully faithful to Bram Stoker's original, best-selling novel of mystery and horror, love and death, sin and redemption. "Dracula" chronicles the vampire's journey from Transylvania to the nighttime streets of London. There, he searches for the blood of strong men and beautiful women while his enemies plot to rid the world of his frightful power. Today's critics see "Dracula" as a virtual textbook on Victorian repression of the erotic and fear of female sexuality. In it, Stoker created a new word for terror, a new myth to feed our nightmares, and a character who will outlive us all. Brooke Allen is a book critic whose work has appeared in numerous publications including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Criterion, The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, and The Hudson Review. A collection of her essays, "Twentieth-Century Attitudes," will be published in 2003.

This month's #HashtagBrigade pick was kind of a reread for me. I read it last year with #DraculaDaily which, while super fun, is also not exactly the best way to read this book for the first time. So I liked reading it in order and in one month instead of six 😂 Now I might do Dracula Daily again next year lol Anyway, while there are places where the action bogs down a little, and the ending feels a little rushed, this book still has some ⬇

BarkingMadRead I‘m glad you liked the format! Dracula daily sounds intriguing but I wonder of i would last long that way! 🧛🏻 2w
PuddleJumper I've been receiving the Dracula Daily emails for 3 years and I've still not finished it 🤣 2w

TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @PuddleJumper - I love the concept of Dracula Daily, but when you get into October sooooooo much happens on certain days that it really gets bogged down. Combined with the fact that you go WEEKS in the summer without anything happening, so I would kind of forget what was happening 😂 I think I may try it next year now that I know how the story goes and who all the characters are. 2w

inthegreensandblues I agree; last year I went to the book launch for Dracula Daily but ultimately decided to read it the old fashioned way for my first read. Some of the out of order entries work best the way Stoker wrote them. This year, I've re-read through DD (still going!) and it's fun to revisit this way. 🖤 2w

I reread this classic every two years. If ever the idea that things can change over time is true, this is one of those times. For some reason, I was more annoyed than ever at the men in this book and how they fawned not just over Lucy but even the one I think is really the heroine of this book, Mina. Without her, the men would never have been able to do squat. Maybe I'm angry because gender inequality is STILL such an issue in this country. #vote

dabbe With all this paleness and blood loss and (I don't know) seeing Mina and Dracula together (what a grotesque scene), why didn't they give her any transfusions like they did for Lucy? Did I miss something somewhere? And I got more annoyed this time around reading it. How dense can these men be? Seriously? I really don't think I have ever read ANYTHING (even a play) where the dramatic irony was basically on every single page. Wowza! 3w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe right? I was wondering the same? Are they waiting for the fangs? Insane 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Mina shows how brilliant she is and how they can‘t get by without her again! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe Good point. Maybe they figure now that they know the reason for blood loss, it‘s better to go straight to the source? You‘d think they would at least discuss it though. 3w
Cuilin @dabbe I was wondering this too and the only thing I came up with was the fact that it didn‘t work for Mina so they thought why bother. 🤷‍♀️ 3w
Larkken @dabbe the way they infantalize but also ignore her is infuriating. You're right, the comparison in how the two ladies are treated by the men is eye opening. 3w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonly @Cuilin @Larkken ... agree 💯. I guess I was hoping that even though they knew it didn't ultimately work for Lucy that they'd still give Mina some blood to keep her going. And is it also bad of me to think that they didn't mind INJECTING blood into Lucy because they all loved her but not Mina? There definitely is a sexually perverse angle to this novel, too. 3w

Clare-Dragonfly Hahaha! It doesn‘t really work on Keanu 😂 3w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly it looks like someone used Halloween color spray on him 🤣 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @BarkingMadRead Honestly, I don‘t get the impression this is a very high-budget movie so that‘s probably what they did 😂 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve never actually seen this movie so I just went to see if it‘s on YouTube. It is, but I also saw trailers for a 2025 movie… also with Keanu! I guess he‘s playing Van H? Love it. EDIT: never mind, apparently they‘re fake 😔 (edited) 3w
CatLass007 @Clare-Dragonfly I saw this when it was first released. At the time it was a high-budget movie. It was a gorgeous film to watch on the big screen. But I pretty much hated it because my heart still goes thud when I remember Frank Langella as Dracula in 1979. Gary Oldman was creepy not sexy. But it did have Cary Elwes and Billy Campbell. 3w
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 @Clare-Dragonfly I also saw it when it came out. Actually, I‘m more interested in rewatching the Bela Lugosi version, which scared me to death when I was a kid. 3w
CatLass007 @rubyslippersreads Didn‘t Lugosi die before filming was finished? That‘s why he kept putting his cape over his face because it wasn‘t Lugosi? 3w
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 I‘ve never heard that. Didn‘t he live into the 1950s, long enough to make movies with Ed Wood? (If you haven‘t seen that Tim Burton movie, I highly recommend it.) 3w
CatLass007 @rubyslippersreads You‘re right. Sorry. He died while filming Plan 9 From Outer Space. His double is who filmed the scenes with a cape over his face during filming of the Ed Wood movie. I remembered it wrong. 3w
dabbe I don't know if anyone is interested, but a short story has just been discovered by Stoker that has been totally unknown to Stoker scholars. It's coming out next week! Link to the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/19/books/bram-stoker-gibbet-hill-dublin.html?unl... 3w

BarkingMadRead @Cuilin ugh how rude of Litsy! 4w
Clare-Dragonfly How odd, I didn‘t get a notification either, and I see my username there plain as day. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly See, I think this disproves Van H‘s theory. Drac is clear that in order to make Mina one of his brides, not only does he have to drink her blood, she has to drink some of his. It‘s not as simple as “anyone who is bitten by a vampire becomes a vampire too.” 4w
mcctrish I just came to see if I‘d been forgotten but apparently Litsy is feeling this Monday as hard as I did teaching grade 2 4w
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I wondered if Drac was making Mina like Renfield since he got rid of him for a new and improved model ? I thought the person had to be drained to a certain point they can‘t come back from but maybe the blood exchange is the final step 4w

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I know 🤣🤣 I also used a #blahblahblah pic 4w
See All 11 Comments
CatLass007 It was #blahblahblah, wasn‘t it. I don‘t know anything about Bram Stoker‘s opinions regarding women. But Jonathan, Van Helsing, and Lucy‘s former suitors don‘t seem to think much of Mina. They just want to “protect her fragile female sensibilities.” Is Stoker telling his readers that these men are all idiots because Mina has so much more to offer and they‘re not allowing her to make her own decisions? Also, they‘re idiots because they (cont)⬇️ 4w
CatLass007 don‘t recognize that Mina‘s symptoms are the same as Lucy‘s. I know women had very few rights at that time in history and my perspective is that of a woman living in the early 21st Century. But, wow, these men all need to be smacked up side the head. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @CatLass007 Yup. They‘re all congratulating themselves over their great choice keeping Mina out of everything, while completely failing to notice her very suspicious symptoms! 4w
CatLass007 I‘m doing a little googling to better understand Bram Stoker‘s views on women. https://libjournals.mtsu.edu/index.php/scientia/article/view/705hickleberrypunch... 4w

He's been flitting at the window as a bat/wolf and was seen as himself by Harker, who recognized him, but that's it. He took center stage at the beginning and looks like he will at the end. Graciouswarriorprincess Those maids! And I agree about Mom getting the memo! 1mo
dabbe Every time Van Helsing leaves or Seward has to go home to his practice or Holmwood has to run home again to care for daddy, we all know what's going to happen to Lucy. It's like knowing the TITANIC is going to sink. We know what's going to happen, but we keep reading anyway, hoping against hope that she'll be okay. So frustrating, especially when Van Helsing knows what's going on. ARGHH!! 1mo

julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly @BarkingMadRead @rubyslippersreads I had the same thought! Uncle Google says blood types were discovered in 1901. Dracula was written in 1897. 1mo
SamAnne @julieclaire @Clare-Dragonfly @BarkingMadRead @rubyslippersreads I‘m catching up on the thread here. My annotated copies has a note about how dangerous transfusions were back then because they didn‘t know about blood types. My copy notes that they thought people of “nobility, wealth would do better with blood from another person from the upper classes. Hence all the comments about Van Helsing approving of his “blood donors” availablee. (edited) 3w

mcctrish Poor Lucy. Drac drains her almost dry and then lets her slowly recover #closethedamnwindowspeople 1mo
dabbe It's easy to think that Lucy is the main female here--with all the men loving her and Dracula draining her, but it's Mina who is the female force to be reckoned with. All of these Victorian notions of the innocent woman (Lucy's always in white, right?) are shoved to the side with Mina. She's even traveling the same path as Jonathan to rescue him, and she's doing it on her own! I love Mina! 🧡🖤🧡 1mo

Bookwormjillk So much going on in this chapter! Bram keeps it moving! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I made a connection on this read that Lucy‘s strange attacks start out specifically on the grave of a suicide. I don‘t know exactly what that would have meant to the CoE of the time, but from their comments earlier it‘s obviously a particularly bad place to be. 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk he sure does! So Renfeld has escaped, his dr is Lucy‘s betrothed? She‘s now addicted to vampire bites, Keanu is checked into the same hospital as Renfeld? Or sent to recover farther afield? Dracula‘s house is beside the hospital where Renfeld is hence the escape #themasterhascometohim #somuchbiting 1mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly I was just looking up vampire lore and came across other ways to become a vampire excluding being bitten by one, and suicide is on the list. (edited) 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin Interesting! I didn‘t realize there were other ways besides being bitten. 1mo

dabbe The suspense for me is always the idea that Mina has no idea what\'s going on (even though she records the ship\'s information), but we do! Usually one runs across dramatic irony in dramas, but Stoker is exemplary at this technigue since the very beginning. We know exactly what\'s going on, but the characters take forever to get a clue. 1mo

CatLass007 I‘m listening to the Audible performance with Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, and an “all-star cast.” Alan Cumming voices Jonathan Harker excellently. In this chapter I found the voice of the actress who voices Mina to be very distracting, so I looked her up. She is the same actress who narrated Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, so it‘s tough to take Mina seriously. 1mo

CatLass007 I‘m enjoying this book more than I expected. I prefer the movie from 1979 with Frank Langella as Dracula. Perhaps a too scholarly approach this time around to DRACULA. I'll give it a try, but I am not sure if I will have the tenacity to read every annotation. I don't know how mine compares, but Ch. 1 is 41 pages with all of the annotations. 😳

Bookwomble I have the tagged edition of Dracula annotated by Leonard Wolf which was insightful. I've got Klinger's annotated Holmes, which is fantastic, so I'll be interested to hear how you find his research into the Count 🔎🦇 1mo

Bookwomble @dabbe Well, on a fundamental level, I prefer the Holmes stories to Dracula, but I enjoyed the annotations on both. Is be interested to read the Klinger Dracula, as I think that side from basic historical notes, there's a lot of scope for different literary and psychological interpretations in that text. 1mo
