Time post this article of the 50 best romance books to read right now:

It‘s an interesting mix.

Tagging a random book because this one isn‘t on Litsy. I‘ve been reading romances lately thanks to about a million TikTok recommendations I‘ve come across, and I‘m about to start book two in this series. Witches, mages, demons, etc, very entertaining! Check TW from the author at the start of the book. The series (Emerald Lakes) is on Kindle Unlimited 😎

Romancelandia on Twitter is a never ending source of learning and fascination for me. There‘s an author claiming they started M|F Omegaverse and they‘re claiming another author copied them. M|M has been around for at least a decade so and I don‘t know how much M|F existed at the start but there‘s a LOT of Omegaverse fanfic. Courtney Milan has been tweeting about it if you‘re one Twitter.

I wanted to read Tomi Adeyemi‘s book but then she accused Nora Roberts of plagiarizing her title & half-assed the apology & pretty much stood by while her fans attacked NR. NR was one of the authors plagiarized in the #CopyPasteCris fiasco, her response is “I will burn your crops & salt the earth”. TA is lucky this isn‘t the response she received. http://fallintothestory.com/plagiarism-then-and-now/ Don‘t mess with NR, or Romancelandia.

esurient I have a hard time separating a book from its author, and I haven't been able to open up the Adeyemi book yet either. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @esurient Instead of tweeting TA should have talked to her agent/publisher/someone with more knowledge because the covers don‘t look anything alike and NR‘s is from a series started before TA‘s book. Also, did no one pay attention to #cockygate and that you can‘t copywrite titles? 6y
esurient I can understand how the kerfuffle started: with a lack of separation between the professional and personal use of social media to engage with fans. An author gripes to a friendly base, 'Ugh, another book is coming out with my same title!'; and that's fair enough. But when Adeyemi learned that her plagerism accusation was wrong, she had a professional responsibility to stop the snowball effect... which she maybe barely tried to do, a bit. 6y
See All 6 Comments
esurient My disappointment over Adeyemi's response is lingering much longer than my irritation over her original inaccurate statements. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @esurient That‘s how I feel about it too. I‘m also super annoyed by all the people who have been dismissive of NR, like she doesn‘t matter. Good luck having her career is all I can think. 6y

Welp. The plot thickens. It looks like #CopyPasteCris had some of the books plagiarized tucked in with books on writing. There‘s photographic evidence from an interview with the NYT. She wants to blame it on a ghost writer but a couple have come forward and said she‘d offered them work that was going to be extending/fixing/whatever she had already written.

LibrarianRyan There was also an article in the la times but it didn‘t have any new info. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Milan has posted a note from the editor of the book on her blog. I feel bad for the editor because they were starting their editing business and had to turn it around quickly - and given everything that happened I wouldn‘t be surprised if it was to keep them from recognizing passages they might have read because they read romance. 6y

It continues. Now #CopyPasteCris is claiming it‘s the fault of her ghostwriter(s) but another ghostwriter has stepped up and said that when they worked for #CopyPasteCris they were given material they assumed was the author‘s and told to make it more complete. And they also weren‘t paid, which appears to be a real problem for ghostwriters (as well as underpayment). There are updates from Courtney Milan and several other people.

DGRachel Does this happen in other genres? To quote Supernatural‘s musical episode “there‘s too much drama in the drama department!” 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There have been various plagiarism charges over the years in over genres (including some journalists) and other genres have their own blow ups - there have been some things in YA, I think. I follow a lot of romance writers because they‘re fun to follow so I end up seeing a lot this sort of thing. KU doesn‘t help because people think romance is easy so they cobble together stuff and get click farms and game the system. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There‘s an article under one of my other posts about an author who lied about having terminal cancer, that‘s not in the romance genre. I think that sort of thing has popped up quite a bit the last few years. Most of the nastiness I see about #ownvoices tends to be in YA and scifi/fantasy - although it does show up in romance discussions. 6y
See All 13 Comments
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I think it depends on who or what you follow because I think there‘s a lot of “stuff” happening that doesn‘t make it outside of a community. 6y
DGRachel Interesting. I follow a bunch of authors but I don‘t spend a lot of time on Twitter so I miss a lot of drama, apparently. 😂 I think I usually only hear about things when you post about it. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel Not all authors get into this sort of thing. And, as @LibrarianRyan pointed out elsewhere, this looks to have some ties to some of the KU scamming that happens. It‘s unfortunate because that ultimately hurts readers. This is bringing up some of the discussion around ghostwriters, and apparently that‘s another whole mess of basically people writing entire books for almost nothing and being take advantage of. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I‘m also obsessed with Twitter. 6y
DGRachel Yeah, I had no idea of all the bad stuff that happens with KU. That was insane when I saw some of it. I appreciate your Twitter obsession-I get the best gossip without having to sort through ALL of it. 😂😂😘 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I didn‘t know about KU until #cockygate but I wasn‘t totally surprised because I‘d stumbled across books I now know were stuffed with extra content to game the system. I try to weed through all the drama to get at the parts that effect readers the most. There are so many great authors to read that I figure why not be able to weed a few out? 6y
DGRachel I saw that they‘ve identified at least 23 authors and 26 books so far that this Christiane person plagiarized. 😱 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel Yes. I have the list. There‘s also some speculation that she‘s using a pen name - all her social media and website have been taken down. 6y
DGRachel This is when I wish a Litsy would let us comment with gifs because I know there‘s a good one out there with someone eating popcorn 🍿 and that‘s totally how I feel at the moment. 😂 6y

LibrarianRyan I‘ll check out twitter when I get off work. Little access here. 6y
LibrarianRyan That was interesting reading. And it‘s also interesting how it connects back to KU just like the last big romance scandal. @julesg 6y
CoffeeK8 I just read about this on #SBTB it‘s crazy! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG @LibrarianRyan That‘s the hashtag that‘s being used on Twitter and you should be able find information through Courtney Milan‘s tweets. @Marilyncjackson Do you use Twitter? 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan yeah. Used the last few power bars on my personal laptop to get caught up. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Yes, there does appear to be a KU element this time. It sucks because there‘s some good stuff on KU and I worry that‘s going to hurt KU overall. 6y

TheDaysGoBy Fantastic job! I think this is the first time in a while I'm not participating in #campnanowrimo - I haven't even taken advantage of the word sprints and I love those lol 7y
CocoReads @TheDaysGoBy this is my first time doing camp and November was my first time doing the original version. I was waylaid in the November one by illness, work and holiday family obligations. Being able to set my own goal helped with this as well. The story won‘t be done at 30,000 words of course, but I thought it was more realistic for me than 50. 7y
TheDaysGoBy @CocoReads Oh for sure. You've gotta do you and what works best. I've never actually done Nanowrimo - writing is just a hobby for me and so I like that the camps are more laid back while still giving me a deadline/goal to work towards 7y
CocoReads @TheDaysGoBy it‘s totally a hobby for me too but one that I‘m just now picking back up after not doing anything for more than 20 years. I‘d always wanted to try it though and I‘m having a good time. Maybe something will come of it and maybe I‘ll just keep writing these for my friends. Romance readers:
I'm in the mood for a contemporary romance for this weekend and need some suggestions! I like snarky heroines, heroes who are not controlling jerks and witty dialogue. Preferably something that's not too obscure that our library system might have on Overdrive. Thanks! #romantsy

mcipher Anything by Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Jennifer Cruise or Barbara O‘Neal/Samuels (she goes by both) should fit the bill and be easy to find. 7y
Bookcation74 Ohh this is my brain candy so I have lots! Penny Reid, Alice Clayton, Julie James, Deborah Coonts, Kristan Higgins and Beth Ehrmann 7y
swishandflick I second @mcipher on anything by Susan Elizabeth Philips! She's great, witty characters and steamy chemistry 👌🏽. I also know Nora Roberts can be considered cliche, but her early books especially are fantastic. The tagged book is one of my favorites of hers! 7y
See All 23 Comments
MarriedtoMrT SEP is a lot of fun! Also, Melanie Harlow (not all but I especially enjoyed the tagged book) 7y
MarriedtoMrT Lucy Parker would also be a great option 7y
MarriedtoMrT If you like a sports romance, I ❤️❤️❤️ this one. The first meeting with the hero is a bit sour but it grows wonderfully. 7y
mcipher Julia Harper - she only has two books I know of, but they were both perfect funny romances. 7y
mcipher And 7y
CoffeeK8 This is a top 5 romance for me, and (I think) free on Amazon! 7y
Christy2318 The Hating Game by Sally Thorne 7y
Johanna414 @mcipher @Bookcation74 @swishandflick @Tiffy_Reads @MarriedtoMrT @CoffeeK8 @Christy2318 Thank you so much for the recommendations! I ended up downloading a Penny Reid title, but put soooooo many on my holds & wish lists! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you! (edited) 7y
Chachic Seconding @MarriedtoMrT's rec for Act Lit It and also its companion novel 7y
Chachic I love Laura Florand's books! You can start with her Amour et Chocolat titles, first is 7y
Chachic Or you can start with her La vie en Roses series, the first is 7y
Chachic If you're willing to try Filipino romance, I know there are a few that are available on Overdrive. Maybe try 7y

FLAIR (or #romanceclassFlair) is a new, ongoing project to release steamy contemporary romance (in English) by Filipino authors. There are four new titles from four different romanceclass authors about to be released, and these books will be unapologetically sexy. What can you expect? Alternating POV. New ways of telling favorite tropes. Filipino characters. Filipino book cover models. Lots of heat.

This documentary is in Hoopla! I watched it to decide if I can use it with my reading class. It's a pretty decent overview of the romance industry. I'm kind of an outsider to romance so always looking to learn more.#romantsy

ReadingSusan I loved the documentary. It was so good. I am not a huge romance reader either so I found it fascinating. 8y
