I pulled this book from my TBR but was also committed to some much needed decluttering so downloaded the audio. I became completely caught up in Julia Whalen narrating Rachel‘s depressing life. Then wham, 2/3rd‘s in and this becomes a thriller and the prior seriousness turned comedic. I then settled in my comfy chair and read along with the narration. This was entertaining!

Sept #DoubleSpin Category: Mystery/Thriller @TheAromaofBooks

AnnCrystal 📚🔉☺️💝 never considered reading along with the narrator, that must have been entertaining 😉👍💝. 2mo
marleed @AnnCrystal I do it often - sometimes just parts but other times the whole book. I typically speed up the audio to match the pace of my reading. It‘s particularly fun when the voice the narrator gives to the characters otherwise impacts my vision for a character. It‘s typically a word for word match but I‘m always entertained when I catch a discrepancy. 2mo

Even though Dennis Lehane is a favourite author of mine, I don't really know what to do with this one. It feels like Lehane wrote two different books and tried to combine them. I prefer the one with the focus on Rachel and her experiences. But at some point everything gets more and more Brian centered. Which wouldn't be bad if the balance would be right. Otherwise it would've been another great play with all the layers reality has to offer.

Oh my gosh I liked this one SO MUCH. It was fun. Dialogue is real and believable. Twists and turns? ✔️

Maybe not the best book ever and maybe not even one of Lehane‘s best, but an engaging story that will keep you turning the page.

I love Dennis Lehane‘s storytelling but I‘m not a fan of Julia Whelan as a narrator. I‘m hoping the story helps me overcome that.

This story was one wild ride. I loved it! Rich character development, unpredictable plot twists- all the things that make Lehane's books so good. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Halfway to my reading goal for the year! 💪🏽

HOLY PLOT TWISTS! I did not see it coming, and I‘m usually pretty good at guessing the plot before it even begins. It starts out slow, a few well hidden clues set here and there, leaves you guessing all the way until the very end. I was not disappointed at all by this book, but who would expect any less from the author behind Mystic River and Shutter Island. This book has worked its way into one of my favorites of all time.

After an explosive opening sentence which is not picked up on till much later on, we follow protagonist Rachel, first in her quest for the father she has never known, then through her subsequent career and emotional life. It's all superbly rendered but seems more Jonathan Franzen than Lehane. Once we hit page 150 though the suspense and mystery elements kick in and the final third is a thrilling rollercoaster of twists and turns.

Cathythoughts 👍🏻sounds good. 5y
Minervasbutler @Cathythoughts some people found it a bit far-fetched. Can't say it bothered me 5y

I‘ve decided to dedicate November to only reading selections from my #BOTM shelf. I‘m terrible at sticking to a monthly TBR or theme, but I really need to knock some of these off my unread list. I‘ve had a few false starts already, but I think I‘ve landed on Dennis Lehane‘s Since We Fell as my first read this month.

I skipped the November selections so I won‘t add any new BOTM books this month. Hopefully I can make a decent dent in this shelf. 😀

TheWordJar O.M.G. Pins on embroidery hoops for display!! That is brilliant! May I steal that idea? 6y
BekahB @TheWordJar oh definitely! I actually bought these on Etsy. I‘ve see a few different sellers with them, but I bought these from a shop called TxStitch. I was going to try to make them myself, but by the time I priced the materials, I figured it would be better to buy from a seller on Etsy. And she did better than I‘m sure I could have done. 😂 6y
OrangeMooseReads I‘ve been trying to get through my BOTM backlog as well. I‘ve realized I have been missing out on some good reads. Good luck to you. 6y

I love Dennis Lehane and I will read anything he writes. This book is psychological thriller that kept me glued for about 250 pages. After that the wheels started to come off and my eyeballs started rolling. Still, I could picture the movie in my head. 3/5 stars

I really liked this book, though it‘s very strange. The first 100 pages is lit fic about a woman searching for her birth father and grappling with the fallout of her mother‘s mental illness. The rest is a thriller exploring questions of identity and trust. It definitely won‘t be for everyone, but it worked for me. #botm

I will read anything Lehane writes. I love his affinity for my hometown of Boston. That being said.. I wish it hadn‘t taken four hours to get into the thick of what this book ended up being. I actually feel like I listened to two different books! The second half is what I wished the entirety had been.

Bailedbailed

I bailed on this one. I couldn‘t care about the characters, the plot, or the setting. I made It a little over 100 pages and just felt soooo bogged down by how much I had left so I stopped, even though it was for book club.

Interestingly, nearly everyone at my book club disliked this pick too. Two loved it! One other bailed, like me (a much older gentleman - “Solidarity!” he said 😍😂💪🏻), but most just didn‘t care for it.

Mdargusch It definitely starts out slow. 7y

My current read now that I‘ve finished The Great Alone (Still processing my thoughts, but it was wonderful!). It took me a long time to get into this one but the pacing seems to be picking up a little bit. Jury is still out on the plot!

Eh. I felt like I just read two different books that had nothing to really do with each other. If either half (first or last) was more developed and cut out the other half, I would possibly would have enjoyed this significantly more. 🤷‍♀️

Book club brunch this morning to discuss this mystery (?) novel. And why yes, that is a little champagne of beers chaser that they give you with your Bloody Mary. 😄 As for the book, it held my attention despite being way longer than it needed to be. Lots of twists and turns, some predictable and some surprises. Probably a good pick for people who enjoy mysteries/psychological suspense. So so if that's not your thing.

BookMaven407 A friend of mine from Wisconsin introduced me to the beer chaser with a Bloody Mary and now I couldn't drink one without it. Such a great combo 🍺Cheers! 7y

A pretty slow boil that builds till the last page. My first go with Lehane. Not much of a suspense reader, but I really enjoyed this. He has a way of delving into characters that keeps you interested. Lots of twisty in this one. I would recommend borrowing this from you library. It won‘t disappoint. I could see it as a film.

I don‘t usually reads thrillers but I enjoyed this one. Made for a perfect palate cleanser; if it weren‘t for #BOTM, I‘d likely never have picked it up, which speaks really highly of the ways that service has expanded what I read.

Set primarily in my college town of Boston, the main character is extremely well developed. I appreciated the author‘s take on anxiety & how it affected Rachel. The twists were unexpected.
