Mehso-so

This book is told in alternating POVs. If you‘ve read a thriller/mystery before you will quickly figure out what‘s going on. There‘s still so much book left. It drags on. The reveal, that confirms you were right all along, doesn‘t come until near the end. A 4th POV, introduced in the last 30 pages or so, adds more interest, however it‘s too little too late to make this a pick.

Enjoying this cozy mystery series set in a lighthouse library. Easy, entertaining listen while I finish my cross stitch ornaments.

Hope everyone in the US has a Thanksgiving full of love and yummy food. Good luck to everyone with challenging relatives. 😃

I‘m not a violent person. I have never wanted to punch someone in the face so hard and he‘s not even a real person. Excellent, terrifying (because it‘s horrifyingly plausible), extremely well researched, rollercoaster, heart wrenching, pulse quickening, stay up late, dark and twisty, read. Can‘t wait for the next one! Thank you Littens for introducing me to Karin Slaughter! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

That awful feeling when you wake up to this notice on your library account. They put this block on because the paperback book I returned had water damage on it. It had water damage when I checked it out from the library. I guess they didn‘t notice it when the last person returned it. They were really nice about it & removed the block. I would have bought a new book if I damaged it. Crisis averted! I know you Littens would understand my panic.

I started cross stitching several months ago and I love it. It‘s so relaxing. I am doing some audiostitching today with the tagged book. This is the 4th book in the series and they changed the narrator. I was used to all of the characters‘ voices and now they‘re all different. Oh well, a small thing in the grand scheme of things.

Here is some information that I was very happy to hear about LibraryThing‘s acquisition of Litsy.

My main concern is that Litsy maintains its welcoming, supportive, nice community. ❤️🤞🏻

LiteraryinPA I agree! That‘s what makes this the only social media I use! 7y
melbeautyandbooks @LiteraryinLititz That makes me happy! This Litsy community is unlike any other social media. No trolls or negativity. ❤️ 7y

melbeautyandbooks @RaimeyGallant I completely agree! 7y
speljamr That's awesome! As someone who was an early adopter of LibraryThing I will say even that small fee was well worth it. Litsy users will be getting a good deal. 7y
melbeautyandbooks @speljamr That is so nice to hear. I have never used LibraryThing, so I didn‘t know anything about it. 7y
AceOnRoam I signed up and it didn't ask for any money, so I'm not sure on the fee? 7y
melbeautyandbooks @AceOnRoam I haven‘t used LT so I am not sure. I think since the fee is for books over 200, that maybe the fee kicks in when you go to add book 201. I bet someone here can answer that. Sorry. 7y
AceOnRoam @melbeautyandbooks ah yes, probably. I think I'll keep my collection over in GR anyway but will track how Library Thing integrates with Litsy 7y

This Rear Window type mystery/thriller story is interesting. It‘s a quick and easy read. The main character was irritating and annoying. She made bad decision after bad decision with awful consequences. I almost bailed because of her. The twists were okay, nothing hugely shocking for this type of book. It was just ok for me.

A Book of Questions | Jane G. Meyer

My friend is trying to find the name of this book. I told her I would ask you super smart Littens.

Please see her description below and post if you know the answer.

Can anyone tell me the name of a book I read in college for a “middle school” English class. It was about a red headed boy who could see in color. And they killed twin children. The red headed boy kidnapped an infant twin child. It was also a movie. Thanks!

EllieDottie She may be talking about the Giver by Lois Lowry... Jonah doesn‘t have red hair but one of the first colors he sees is his friend‘s red hair and he kidnaps a baby it‘s not a twin but with twins in this world only one lives because otherwise twins would be different than everyone else. It‘s also a movie. (edited) 7y

Not a Sound | Heather Gudenkauf
Pickpick

The opening pages sucked me in and kept me reading quickly. I finished the book in two sittings.

Amelia is an ER nurse surrounded by a constant
cacophony of sounds and then in a violent instant, she's enveloped in silence.

Amelia made some bad choices trying to deal with the aftermath of this incident that took her hearing. She ended up losing her marriage, her profession, and her relationship with her daughter. Continued below 👇🏻

melbeautyandbooks 2 of 5-I think the author was very honest about her portrayal of how Amelia dealt with all of these things. I liked that she didn't try to blame others or make excuses for her own choices. She wasn't consumed by rage or revenge. (edited) 7y
melbeautyandbooks 3 of 5-Two years later, she's still learning how to live with her new circumstances of being suddenly deaf, an alcoholic, separated from her husband and daughter with no job. Any one of those would be a lot for anyone to handle. (edited) 7y
melbeautyandbooks 4 of 5- Of course Amelia gets drawn into the mystery of her friend's death. The pacing of this mystery was perfect. The author gave you just the right amount of information to keep you guessing and wanting more. She made you feel Amelia's determination and fear, which was heightened by her hearing loss. melbeautyandbooks 5 of 5- The ending did not disappoint. It was as well done as the rest of the book. I've read several mystery/thrillers recently where the ending felt rushed or tacked on for shock value. This ending hit the right tone for the book. (edited) 7y
melbeautyandbooks This story is a good reminder that health care is a business. And if your doctor is not in the business of making you well, take your business to a doctor who will! Your doctor works for you, and you know yourself and your body better than anybody. 7y

I love being the first person to read a brand new book from the library! She's a favorite author of mine and I have been waiting for this one.

I promise to take good care of it. ❤️📚

#lovemylibrary

Trina_L I'm the first one to get my hands on it too! I reserved it a LONG time ago :) 7y
melbeautyandbooks Way to go @Trina_L! I hope you enjoy it! 7y
MyNamesParadise Me too!! That's why I put holds quickly on all the new books once they're added to the catalog. Even though I love libraries and being able to check out books for free, the really used looking ones are like "ick" idk where this has been!! 7y
melbeautyandbooks @MyNamesParadise - Yay for you! Oh yeah some books are gross! 7y

Hello Littens who have already read this book. I have a question for you.

I'm 14% in so far, do these two main characters get smarter as the book goes on?

More details in the spoiler comment below.

melbeautyandbooks Alice meets a strange man who doesn't remember who he is or how he got there and lets him into her house to spend the night with her and her three children. Her two oldest children even tell her how stupid that is and she still does it. Lily marries a man she barely knows and moves to another country with no bank account and no access to money. Hello! 🤦‍♀️ 8y
DebinHawaii Not sure how much 'smarter' they get and I totally agree that their decisions are very dubious and dumb but they did grow on me and I liked the book. 😆👍 8y
melbeautyandbooks @DebinHawaii- That makes me feel better. If you liked it, then I probably will too. Thanks! 🤞🏻😊 8y

This is available on NetGalley as a Read Now.

I absolutely loved the first book, The Butterfly Garden. It was a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟read.

TW- sexual assault and violence

ErinGoBragh1011 I just finished The Butterfly Garden and have moved onto this one. I hope it's just as good as the first. 7y
melbeautyandbooks @eringobragh1011 I'm curious to know what you think of it. I really loved the first book. It was so unique. 7y

I loved The Secret History. I'm halfway through this book and I'm frustrated by the frequent negative use of the word gay.

The N word has appeared once so far and so has retard.

I enjoy following Theo's story. I don't understand the need for this type of negativity. I do understand his negativity towards people who have treated him poorly. There's no need for this other crap.

Octoberwoman I haven't read this one yet, but The Secret History is one of my all time top ten favorites. 8y

Parents do NOT babysit their own children. It's called parenting.

This really bugs me. And I'm not a parent.

ReadingSusan That bugs the heck out of me especially since it's mostly used towards men 😡😡 8y
melbeautyandbooks @ReadingSusan - Yes! I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one. 8y
TrishB Grrrr....I'm always arguing about this. @ReadingSusan I think it's always about men! 8y

Sue I'm there with you. Use of language says so much. 8y
melbeautyandbooks @TrishB @Sue Thanks for confirming I am not the only person who is bugged by this. It really sends a message that it's the mother's job to be a parent, and the dad just has to do it temporarily every so often. ( Of course this assumes a mother- father household). Have a great day everyone! 8y

Do you ever wish you could find a cozy set in a certain state? Or about fishing, fashion, tea, or some other theme? Heard about one and can't remember the title or author?

Then I have found the site for you! It's all about cozies and lists them by state, by theme, and more.

Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch you may want to check this out. I know you were trying out cozy mysteries a few months ago. 8y

Mdargusch Thanks for the info @melbeautyandbooks and for tagging me @Reviewsbylola 8y
MyNamesParadise I personally despise cozy mysteries and don't consider them real mysteries 🙈 don't hate me! I like the darker themes...I always have. But I understand why others love them. 8y
ReadingEnvy Cool. I definitely am guilty for picking cozies based on location... Irish bog bodies anyone? 8y
melbeautyandbooks @CoveredInRust Yay! Love to hear that! 8y
melbeautyandbooks @Mdargusch - You're very welcome! Thanks @Reviewsbylola for making sure she got the info. What a lovely community! 8y
melbeautyandbooks @MyNamesParadise You're allowed to like what you like. Life would be boring if we all liked the same stuff. I also love the darker mysteries. Give me a Tana French or some Henning Mankell any day. I also love the cozy mysteries for those times when I just want some brain candy. 🍭🍬🍫 8y
melbeautyandbooks @ReadingEnvy I love a good Irish mystery! 8y

DebinHawaii @melbeautyandbooks What a great resource! Thanks for letting me know & tagging me. I thought I knew the Hawaii set ones but it gave me more to check out. 👍📚 And BTW I'm totally with you on loving both the cozy mysteries & the darker ones too. Cozies are fun transitions, brain candy and comfort reads for me! 😆🍭 8y
melbeautyandbooks @DebinHawaii I'm so happy to hear you found it helpful! Yes to both dark and cozies. My brain needs a break sometimes. 😊 8y
