Not a Sound | Heather Gudenkauf
New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf has been described as "masterful" and "intelligent" and compared to Lisa Scottoline and Jodi Picoult. Introducing her most compelling heroine yet, she delivers a taut and emotional thriller that proves she's at the top of her class. When a tragic accident leaves nurse Amelia Winn deaf, she spirals into a depression that ultimately causes her to lose everything that matters--her job, her husband, David, and her stepdaughter, Nora. Now, two years later and with the help of her hearing dog, Stitch, she is finally getting back on her feet. But when she discovers the body of a fellow nurse in the dense bush by the river, deep in the woods near her cabin, she is plunged into a disturbing mystery that could shatter the carefully reconstructed pieces of her life all over again. As clues begin to surface, Amelia finds herself swept into an investigation that hits all too close to home. But how much is she willing to risk in order to uncover the truth and bring a killer to justice?

4⭐ I‘ve never read a book before with a hearing impaired MC. It did heighten the suspense when it came to her sleuthing…like I was so much more worried about her when she was doing her investigating. At least she had Stitch, her service dog, with her. Which, by the way, Stitch steals the show…💗 him. The who-dun-it, without giving anything away, kind of made me sick to my stomach that something like that could go down….that‘s just not right.

Megabooks I‘m loving these graphics! 3y

Page turner. The main character is deaf and I enjoyed a book from a different perspective. The descriptiveness for what life is like with not being able to hear was fantastic and eye opening.

Today‘s Prompt: SOUND OF SILENCE

As if losing your hearing because of a hit-and-run driver wasn't enough trauma, Amelia and her service dog, Stitch, found a dead body of a fellow nurse on the beach.

If you enjoy suspense at its best, you won't want to miss NOT A SOUND.  I couldn't stop reading.  5/5

Not A Sound ended up being my favorite thriller I've read so far. The main character in the book is deaf after an accident and has a service dog Stitch. Her point of view made the whole situation more intense I think. It felt like you were right there too. I will have to look into the author's other books

Nute I haven‘t read his book, but I have liked other books by her. 5y

This page-turner was unputtdownable. When the deaf protagonist finds the body of an old friend in the river, her life as a former nurse, current unemployed alcoholic becomes more complicated than she could have imagined, and she learns that she‘s even stronger than she ever thought possible.

Yay for Iowa authors!!!! This is an excellent mystery/thriller. A tragic accident leaves nurse Amelia deaf. Depression and drinking estrange her from her husband and step-daughter. When she discovers the body of a woman who used to be a good friend, Amelia stops at nothing to find the killer. But who is trying to stop Amelia? This is a great page turner!!!

I like anything that Heather Gudenkauf writes! Her book about the social worker is still my favorite of hers but this one was pretty darned good! I also like the fact that the heroine is deaf, as we so rarely see heroines with a hearing disability.

A good book for what it is: a plot-driven mystery that kept me engaged. I'd have liked to see more development of the characters, especially the late- deafened protagonist, but it was a page-turner and good choice for me during this busy time (end of school, parents coming to visit soon).

Cinfhen I've read this author before but can't remember which book🤷🏼‍♀️ 8y

The opening pages sucked me in and kept me reading quickly. I finished the book in two sittings.

Amelia is an ER nurse surrounded by a constant
cacophony of sounds and then in a violent instant, she's enveloped in silence.

Amelia made some bad choices trying to deal with the aftermath of this incident that took her hearing. She ended up losing her marriage, her profession, and her relationship with her daughter. Continued below 👇🏻

melbeautyandbooks 2 of 5-I think the author was very honest about her portrayal of how Amelia dealt with all of these things. I liked that she didn't try to blame others or make excuses for her own choices. She wasn't consumed by rage or revenge. (edited) 8y
melbeautyandbooks 3 of 5-Two years later, she's still learning how to live with her new circumstances of being suddenly deaf, an alcoholic, separated from her husband and daughter with no job. Any one of those would be a lot for anyone to handle. (edited) 8y
melbeautyandbooks 4 of 5- Of course Amelia gets drawn into the mystery of her friend's death. The pacing of this mystery was perfect. The author gave you just the right amount of information to keep you guessing and wanting more. She made you feel Amelia's determination and fear, which was heightened by her hearing loss. (edited) 8y
See All 9 Comments
melbeautyandbooks 5 of 5- The ending did not disappoint. It was as well done as the rest of the book. I've read several mystery/thrillers recently where the ending felt rushed or tacked on for shock value. This ending hit the right tone for the book. (edited) 8y

Currently reading this mystery/thriller ARC I got a few months ago from a local indie. Good description of terminology here. Picked it up b/c main character is deaf. I am too, but more like big D. Interestingly, author is deaf herself and her website describes her as hearing-impaired. Maybe that description was penned before this book was. This just came out last month. So far so good although it's a departure from what I usually read.

Bklover Interesting. I'm 57, and when I was way younger "hard of hearing" was what I heard used most often. 8y
Zelma Very interesting. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Bklover @Zelma I think the hearing-impaired term came later as an attempt to be an umbrella term for both Deaf/deaf and hard-of-hearing, but it is now controversial-- it's been said it's like being "straight-impaired" if one is LGBT or "white-impaired" if one is a POC. 8y
MyNamesParadise I had no idea Heather Gudenkauf was deaf!! 8y
ValerieAndBooks @MyNamesParadise I was pleasantly surprised-- usually deaf characters are written by hearing authors who don't always get it right. 8y

Got this ARC novel (free) from the bookstore today. Whenever I see titles like this, or w/ "Silent" or "Silence" in it, I always suspect it'll be about deafness. Yep, MC is late-deafened. Pub date May 2017. Anyone read this yet? I went there to get some bookish goodies to fill out my Cupid package (and s/he will now have one extra book, picked up another that I think s/he might like ?). Mailing #cupidgoespostal package & pic, both tomorrow!?

ValerieAndBooks I am Deaf myself so I am always curious how Deaf characters are depicted in books. 8y
