Duma Key
Duma Key: A Novel | Stephen King
No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through...A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a "geographic cure," a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else. ""Edgar, does anything make you happy?" "I used to sketch.""Take it up again. You need hedges...hedges against the night.""Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth's past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating. The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural -- Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.

Renting a house on Duma Key—a stunningly beautiful and eerily undeveloped splinter off the Florida coast—Edgar slowly emerges from his prison of pain to bond with Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick, elderly woman whose roots are tangled deep in this place.

Overall, I‘m considering this “ok”. Some parts I liked more than others, but art is not my thing, including reading about it. There were shorter chapters in italics to tell us those chapters are from another perspective, but large sections in italics often lose my interest, as did these chapters, unfortunately.

Maybe it's because I wasn't expecting a lot out of this book, but it absolutely blew me out of the water with its inventive plot, likable protagonist and side characters, and unique concepts throughout. Despite my strong desire to tear through this one and discover what would happen, I forced myself to really savor Duma Key, and was ultimately very satisfied with the time I spent there. 5/5

Bookwormjillk I was surprised how much I liked this one too 11mo
Pikathulhu I think that, for me, a large part of my enjoyment came from how tantalizing the mystery at the heart of the island is, and what a great job King does at parceling out details a little bit at a time. 11mo

One of King‘s most underrated books and one of my favorites. The final 200 pages are some of the emotionally resonant and horrifying he‘s ever written.

CuriousG I'm not a Stephen King superfan, but I definitely have read and enjoyed many of his books. This is definitely one of my favourites though. It has stuck with me more than the others. 1y

The struggle within us is exposed by first-person narrator Edgar Freemantle‘s own recollections and his assessment of other characters who help tell this ghost story. Frankly, those early tales were far scarier than the climax, which read like a Hollywood summer blockbuster finale. While I may not have loved King‘s ending, the path he weaved me through the Florida Keys, the power of memories and surrealistic art will haunt me for a while.

5feet.of.fury The beginning was such a bummer that I almost didn‘t go on. (Pam, The divorce, the DOG😩) but I ended up really enjoying it. 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury I know! Stephen King is so messed up! 2y
Erinsuereads Ohhhh the dogggg 😭😭😭😭 but in typical king fashion it gets so much worse 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I remember the first time I read it closing the book and setting it on the coffee table and staring at it when he finds out about Elsa. I knew it was coming from all the foreshadowing but still! @BarkingMadRun and @5feet.of.fury 2y
BarkingMadRead @ErinSueMreads that was the worst, knowing it‘s coming never helps! It almost makes it worse! 2y
Erinsuereads Yessssss especially since the heavy foreshadowing started like 4 chapters prior! 2y
Erinsuereads Also going back to the first time i read it....did anyone else think it was going to a weirdly normal king book at first? Like the paranormal stuff really took me off guard for some reason. 2y
BarkingMadRead @ErinSueMreads yes! I thought it was going to more like a cujo type of thing, something scary but real, and then wham! 2y
5feet.of.fury @ErinSueMreads agree! The change in narration with the daughter “that was the last time we ever talked” 😭 and I was like “what he just saved her, she burned the picture!” Ugh. Everything after that became such a frenzy. Loved it @BarkingMadRun (edited) 2y
5feet.of.fury @ErinSueMreads I did, Edgar was so tortured after the accident I thought it was going to be more of a war with his mind type of thing vs…. All the other things that happened. 2y
Erinsuereads @BarkingMadRun it really is a WHAM too! 2y
Erinsuereads @5feet.of.fury that literally hits you like a ton of bricks. Like physically feel your stomach drop out of your body. And yes! I thought it was going to be a psychological one too! And it's not even like he tries to hide that it won't be! The whole book gets progressively weirder! But for some reason my brain just avoided and avoided 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
Erinsuereads Also can we talk about how jack, wireman, miss Eastlake, and Edgar are literally some of the best characters he has ever written? Like we all know he's a strong character writer, but he really outdid himself on this one. Wireman especially is just so overtop yet so real at the same time. I want a wireman friend 2y
Erinsuereads Unless he comes with a moldy old mansion full of maybe vampires and porcelain dolls. If so so I'm out 2y
Erinsuereads Also also...ifso....since we were on the subject of iykyk @BarkingMadRun I'm almost deleted the last sentence in my previous post 🤣 2y
BarkingMadRead @ErinSueMreads omg yes! Such vivid characters and everyone needs a wireman. I was really hoping for a Shawshank ending! 2y
Addison_Reads I didn't get a chance to re-read this one but this discussion is making me want to go back to it soon. 2y
Bklover @ErinSueMreads I agree- his characters are always wonderful but these are exceptional. I remember though the first time I read this the whole book felt weird as it doesn‘t take place in Maine. It still feels odd to me reading a SK book that takes place in Florida. I love this one though! 2y
NikkiM5 I just finished the book, so I avoided the post until now. I loved this book. And totally agree, these are some of the best King characters; I loved them all. Except Pam, she can kick rocks in socks 🤣 2y
BarkingMadRead @NikkiM5 I agree lol what a horrible human she is 2y
NikkiM5 I admit she is a good “villain”. And despite the size of this book (I promise, I will be on time next month 😂 I need to check these page numbers) I did not want this book to end. And I loved looking up the artwork. That‘s also why I took so long, as usual, King had me googling a lot. Losing Wireman was pretty painful, ugh la loteria 😢 2y
BarkingMadRead @NikkiM5 I love when I have to Google during a book, but it can often be such a rabbit hole! After this we are doing Under the Dome, but I think I‘m going to extend the time because it‘s THICK 2y
NikkiM5 Yes and I am a sucker for Rabbit holes 🤣 I‘ve read Under the Dome, so I won‘t be late for that 2y

Finished a whole day early for #losersclub can‘t wait to discuss!

What an adventure!
It‘s a long one, I haven‘t read TOO much Stephen King but in similarities to the others I have read: I found the pacing to be impeccable. The repeated phrasing he uses amped up the tension phenomenally. Creepy twins.
This one also has art, a ghost ship, premonitions, creepy dolls, trauma..

The beginning was uncomfortable, glad I persevered.

BarkingMadRead The beginning was awful for sure, but I really ended up loving it! So glad you enjoyed it as well!! 2y

When I‘m not reading (or listening to) Stephen King, I forget how freaking much I love Stephen King… but it all comes back so fast.

My Duma Key hardcover has been on the shelf long enough for several people to borrow/read it (and to lose its dust jacket) but I listened instead.🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved the weirdness, creeping dread in paradise, difficult relationships honestly dealt with, and amazing characters. Plus art and a ghost ship!

TheNeverendingTBR I liked the character Wireman and loved the book so much, very sad and tragic though! 😢 4y
Gissy I should add that I almost DNF the book because the character use a female doll as an anger control object. Who suggested this part to Mr. King? I was furious 😡but then this area was resolved in the novel. Never an object that represents a human being or animal should be used as a tool for anger management. This could be a trigger for some persons or a reason for not reading the novel, I will understand. 4y

One of my favorite book memories is from 2 summers ago. I read this on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico which is where it‘s set. It made it extra scary!
