Soubhiville Yaaaaaaayyyyyy! 6y
Aimeesue One of my faves! 6y
Craftylikefox Back on track! Looking forward to this one!! 6y
Laura317 I started the Audible version today. Excited to read my first witch one. 6y
Iblu I wanted to ask you Anglophones, as I cannot get the pun in the title this time. If there was a pun in the title, obviously...😬 6y
Moray_Reads @Iblu it's a reference to the three witches in Macbeth, "Wyrd" is the Anglo-Saxon origin of "weird" with an earlier meaning relating to destiny ? 6y
Moray_Reads Yes, witches at last ✊ 6y
Iblu @Moray_Reads thanks!!!! I knew there was something and this is rather profound. Guess I should be tackling some Shakespeare sooner or later- and fill that huge culture gap and fear of the almighty S ( not the easiest to read in original for non-English speakers, without proper guidance I‘d say. I think I‘ll have to get a translated version and get over my snobbery of only reading books in original...) 6y
Moray_Reads @Iblu it takes plenty of practice even for native speakers. Watching is always better than reading Shakespeare for me but there are some good annotated editions and I'm sure there must be great translations out there! 6y
Gezemice I took a hiatus from Litsy.... but it looks like I came back at a good time! Wyrd Sisters is my absolute favorite Discworld book. Granny Weatherwax rocks. I will just have to re-read it. 😁 6y

gossamerchild Why is Mort so annoying to me? Is it just a symptom of age that I found myself sympathizing more with Death? 6y
dariazeoli Death and the cat! 😁 I felt for Mort getting miffed when he wasn‘t called by his name. And Rincewind reappears! (Let‘s pretend I didn‘t edit this comment 5 times. Is it just me or are the touchscreen keyboards getting harder to use?) (edited) 6y
Soubhiville I love Death! I was a little sad that there wasn‘t more focus on Death in this one. But yes, I love the “cats are nice” quote! @dariazeoli It was nice to have the introduction to what Death‘s home and life are like. It just left me wanting more! 6y
BarbaraJean @Soubhiville @dariazeoli Yes—the cats!! My favorite was the line in the job interview, where we discover that Death‘s preferred employment is “something nice working with cats or flowers.” 😂 6y
Chrys I really enjoyed this, I love the character Death, and poor Mort never being called by name. I was also absurdly happy with Rincewind‘s cameo. Oh, and that the horse‘s name was Binky (edited) 6y
Craftylikefox I think I am of unpopular opinion. I enjoyed this one but this wouldn‘t be one of my top favorites. I like Death. I love his relationship with cats. Mort is okay. I felt bad for Mort most of the time. 6y
gossamerchild @Craftylikefox as a reread, I'd agree with you. I think I liked it more the first time. Death is definitely my favorite character, though I do feel bad for his adopted daughter. I would hate being stuck at age 16 for 35 years 🤣 6y
jmtrivera This was the first Discworld I ever read, and I've loved it every time! 6y
hgrimes I read this just a couple months ago and it was my intro to Discworld. It had me laughing my ass off, and Death instantly became one of my all-time favorite literary characters. I love the dark and absurdist humor, the characters, and the inventiveness of Death‘s world and occupation. Still my favorite so far! 6y
julesG DEATH is the best! One of my favourite DW characters, not oy because he loves cats and speaks in caps. 😁 6y
Moray_Reads Death is fantastic and Mort does have a special place in my heart as the first Discworld I read. I always enjoy it but like the other earlier stories I realise when I read it that it's still not quite THERE. Which is a good thing, it means they just get better and better! 6y
khooliha Just finished this one up and I still think this is the series finally finding its feet. I do wish the book spent a little more time with Ysabell, since she ends up pretty important in the last third. Honestly, this reread had me feeling the characters ages, especially Keli. They're a frustrating crop of teens sometimes! Oh, and add Cutwell to the "young wizard" list that these early books have been studiously putting together. 6y
khooliha Also, congrats to Rincewind for saving wizard academia and not even getting that close to dying! 6y
Laura317 My favorite bit was the interview Death did for a job. That was adorable. Yes. Death is adorable. I liked Cutwell and his door knocker, too. I can see where TP‘s writing is getting better and better! #Ookbookclub 6y
Dorianna @Laura317 Death is absolutely adorable. His interview was one of my favorite parts. 6y
Gezemice I am just getting back to reading, Mort is a favorite, will re-read next 6y

SexyCajun Ordered it from EBay. Should be here Monday! 7y
IamIamIam Are you doing publication order monthly???? After The Stand, I put SK on hiatus again! Lol... if you're going for pub order, I'm in for this one! I'm skipping any Bachman I don't have for now. 7y
InLibrisVeritas So they decided to split the audio up into portions for this one 😒 I guess I'll buy them as I go. 7y
DGRachel @IamIamIam Yes! One book a month in publication order. 😊 7y
DGRachel @InLibrisVeritas That stinks! 😡 7y
IamIamIam @DGRachel Excellent!!!! I'll try to keep up!!! 👍👍👍 7y
CSeydel I‘ve recently read this one so maybe it will give me a chance to get caught up on the Shining! I‘m way behind. 7y
BookwormAHN @InLibrisVeritas I bought the three different Audible narrations of Night Shift but fortunately I also found my copy of the book because there is still about 1/4 of the book left out 😾 7y
InLibrisVeritas @BookwormAHN Ugh...thanks for the heads up. I will try to find a physical copy. 7y
kamoorephoto That‘s the copy I have! 7y
Erin7 I‘m excited about this one. It‘ll be a first time read fo me and I‘ve heard great things. 7y
TheWordJar How did I get messed up??? I thought last month was Night Shift and this month was The Shining! I guess it‘s nice I‘ve made progress on Night Shift already then. But I was definitely looking forward to rereading The Shining, so I‘ll have to find time to do that! 7y

SexyCajun Here here! 7y
DGRachel I‘m curious - was this a reread for most of you or a first time? I‘d never read this before. I honestly expected it to be scarier. There were a few sections that creeped me out (I still can‘t leave my shower curtain closed), but overall I was rather disappointed. 7y
MidnightBookGirl I've reread this one many times, most recently right before Doctor Sleep came out. It's not my favorite King novel, but I like it more each time I read it. 7y
SexyCajun @DGRachel so I‘m a long time King lover. But I saw the movie first a looooong time ago and remembered basics about it. The movie definitely has scary moments that ultimately make JACK out to be crazy but obviously the hotel itself has an attitude problem. Something or someone... a spirit or whatever takes over him I can see why King was not happy with the movie because the book explains it ALL and isn‘t really that scary although a little creepy 7y
SexyCajun Their son happens to be some type of medium???? Maybe? I‘m not sure how to describe the boy. But his daddy is trying to do better with his life and instead he ends up being the ultimate sacrifice to the hotel 7y
DGRachel @MidnightBookGirl That‘s interesting, that you like it more with each reread. Maybe I‘ll have to try it again in a year or two. @SexyCajun The movie is definitely different! I saw it 20 years ago or so, and I remember Jack being crazy but never understood that the Hotel had possessed him, so I can see why King didn‘t like the film, too. 7y
SexyCajun @DGRachel and with the hat being said, I guess the movie maker was caught between a rock and a hard place. I guess he just wanted his movie version to be exciting and bizarre!! 7y
ReadingsByTheC @DGRachel I read this for the first time a year or so ago, and couldn't bring myself to reread it for this discussion. My daughter had to sleep with me for a week after I read it. But I have always had a thing about haunted houses. I read the lost short story a couple of weeks ago and was scared all over again so I knew the book would be just as scary for me the second time around. None of his other books scare me like this one. 7y
SexyCajun @MidnightBookGirl what do you think you liked more re reading it? 7y
BookwormAHN Everytime I reread The Shining I like the book more and the movie less. 7y
ReadingsByTheC @SexyCajun I agree. Not to mention Jack Nicholson looks a little crazy from the start! 7y
SexyCajun @ReadingsByTheC lmao. Jack Nicholson looks that way in every movie he‘s in doesn‘t he 🤷🏼‍♀️😂😂 7y
MidnightBookGirl Does anyone remember that Friends episode where Rachel and Joey agree to read each other's book- Joey makes Rachel read The Shining and she makes him read Little Women. When the book scares Rachel, Joey tells her he keeps scary books in the freezer. Lol 7y
DGRachel @MidnightBookGirl Yes! That‘s why I took a picture of the book in my freezer when I did my Litsy review. 😂😂 7y
SexyCajun @MidnightBookGirl never liked that show 🤷🏼‍♀️ sorry 😂😂 7y
Chrys I had read this, but over 20 yrs ago. It didn‘t really scare me, but I enjoyed it. I noticed that even while Jack is still basically sane & telling himself he is not a bad guy his darker colors are showing, for example the scene with the wasp nest. Thinking about making them pay for stinging him, & thinking he was the passive victim in his life rather than taking responsibility. He is perfect for the hotel‘s purposes. 7y
ReadingsByTheC @MidnightBookGirl Yes! Classic! There's even a horror book podcast called Books in the Freezer now. 7y
DGRachel @Chrys Yes! He‘s definitely the perfect conduit for The Hotel. 7y
SexyCajun @ReadingsByTheC omg are you serious??!! YASSSSS With that being said My Favorite Murder is an amazing podcast and funny!!! 7y
cherinium I read this book for the first time within the past year. I was completely underwhelmed. It didn't scare me or creep me out, which was a huge disappointment to me. I was mostly just bored. It's interesting to see the posts that have come out of this #buddyread. I started my own way through the #stephenking works last year and am surprised how hit or miss he is for me. Before I really got into his stories, I always assumed I would love it all. 7y
Eggbeater It's not really the hotel that's scary--it's Jack's alcoholism for me. I find it interesting that Stephen King was still drinking when he write this. 7y
ReadingsByTheC @SexyCajun Yes, it's pretty good. I've gotten some nice recommendations from it. I don't think I've heard of My Favorite Murder. I'm going to go check it out. Is it about murder books or murder in general? 7y
ReadingsByTheC @Eggbeater That's a great point. 7y
SexyCajun @ReadingsByTheC it‘s two girls who do their own investigation into actual murders and tell the story on their podcast. They‘re actually really funny at the same time! They‘ve been on for about two years and have gotten big enough to tour to other countries and do their podcast live to an audience! Their motto is STAY SEXY AND DONT GET MURDERED (edited) 7y
Karkar I agree with the others who mentioned that the more I reread this one the more I like it. I picture Jack as he looks in the movie, I did not like the movie. 7y
ReadingsByTheC @SexyCajun That sounds awesome! Downloading episodes as we speak. 7y
SexyCajun @Eggbeater oh crap! I‘m a bad Stephen King fan 😢😢 I didn‘t know he had been an alcoholic 🙁 7y
ReadingsByTheC @cherinium I totally understand. I have heard a lot of people say that about him being hit or miss. What is your favorite book of his? 7y
SexyCajun @ReadingsByTheC I‘m not sure if maybe you should start from the beginning and kind of jump around? If I were new to the podcast I might find it odd jumping in on the right now episodes. But however you‘d like 💁🏼‍♀️lol 7y
Eggbeater @SexyCajun I think he's been in recovery since late 80s. He's pretty open about it. I read somewhere that he doesn't remember writing Cujo because he was drunk. I think that's why he writes alcoholics so well. 7y
SexyCajun @Eggbeater omg wow! Well you know what..... maybe it was a sort of therapy for him 🤷🏼‍♀️. Doesn‘t remember writing Cujo. Dammmmmnnn 7y
cherinium @ReadingsByTheC Admittedly, I've read very few of his works at this stage. So far, IT is probably my favorite. I really enjoyed The Long Walk and some of his short stories. I'm currently reading Firestarter, and I'm liking it a lot. The Stand was pretty good, too. 7y
ReadingsByTheC @cherinium IT is so good. I haven't read The Long Walk yet. Looking forward to reading it in August. 7y
cherinium @ReadingsByTheC I hope you like it. It had a nice, steady build of tension that really appealed to me. 7y
daena I just finished my first time reading it. I can see how re-reading the story over time makes you love it more. I am about a week done on it, and have been mulling it over in my head trying to make more connections. It‘s is such a multi-layered story. (edited) 7y
YouReadMyEyes This was my first read and I loved it. It‘s my favorite SK book so far. Super creepy. It‘s different than the movie in many ways. Better. 7y
Debiw781 This was a reread for me and I was surprised I didn‘t enjoy it as much as I did the first time. That‘s not to say it wasn‘t good as it was, just not as good as my first read of it. 7y
Balibee146 First read for me.... I enjoyed it more than I expected to. Liked the slow build and the intense claustrophobic feeling that built up as winter and solitude closed around them. 7y
Erin7 This is a reread for me, and it‘s funny how your memory can change between reads. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was Danny who had the initial encounter with the hedge animals and not his dad. I also noticed a lot earlier than last time when the hotel had started taking hold of Jack. I did have a harder time staying connected to the story this time around. But part of that may just be timing with less time to read lately. 7y
InLibrisVeritas This was my first time reading this and I enjoyed it! It turned out a lot different than I expected. Super creppy. I appreciate his ability to show the darker side of humans in such an unsettling way. 7y
JulAnna This was a re-read for me, one of my first SK reads from years ago. I always felt it was more creepy than scary. @MidnightBookGirl love the Friends reference!😊 I definitely think King‘s experiences with alcohol come through in his description of Jack‘s descent. 7y
FantasyChick This was a first time read for me and I found it very slow for the first little bit. It picked up and I really enjoyed it but hated the ending. 7y
DGRachel @FantasyChick What was it about the ending that bothered you? 7y
FantasyChick @DGRachel I'm not really sure, lol. I think it's just the way it all wrapped up. I could be being influenced by the movie on this, but I feel that it had more of a happy-ish ending than I would have liked. You know, "we went through hell and back but now that dad's dead let's sit by the pool and relax". I wasn't prepared for that lol. 7y
FantasyChick I also think that the finishing scenes in the hotel with Danny speaking to Jack and the spirit itself was a little cheesy and a bit anti-climactic. Was definitely a moment that was way beyond Danny's years especially after all the events that went on in the hotel. I know he is special....but that scene just didn't sit right with me. 7y
DGRachel @FantasyChick I agree that things were wrapped up almost too neatly, but I liked the fact that the source of the evil burned. I don‘t read a lot of horror novels, but the ones that freak me out the most are the ones where evil walks away, scot free, at the end. I NEED Good to triumph over Evil. 😂 7y
