Pickpick

I'm very behind on reviews but slowly catching up on #OokBOokClub reading @julesG

I liked this one better than Sourcery. Rincewind is still bumbling along but he at least had a good excuse for his cluelessness this time, with his not actually being a demon. I enjoyed the way Eric's wishes were interpreted and the depiction of the Trojan War

Soft pick

Pickpick

This one was a low pick for me. I'm not a huge fan of the Rincewind books but this installment, which involves time travel and the Australian continent, was entertaining enough and I always enjoy appearances of The Luggage.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I still haven't read this one; I'm falling behind already haha 3mo
TheSpineView Great job!👍🌞😊 3mo
julesG I am astonished at how many of the #OokBOokClub-ers don't like the Rincewind books. We're transitioning out of the UU now. Glad you stuck with us on the re-read 3mo

kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I fell behind the first time through all the books with #OokBookClub so I was so happy to have this second chance to fill in the gaps! The nice thing is that most of the books can be read standalone so it doesn't matter if you skip one. 3mo
kwmg40 @TheSpineView Thanks! I'm happy that @julesG decided to run the Pratchett reread again, as it is definitely helping me with the #SeriesLove2024 challenge. 3mo
kwmg40 @julesG I wouldn't say that I don't like the Rincewind books. I just like them less than the other Discworld books. I'm still glad we're reading through them. I think the reason I like this subseries less is that the earlier Rincewind books seemed mostly slapstick with little character development, though there is a bit more of that with the later books. 3mo
julesG 😘 I'm glad we started the reread, too. Rincewind gets better towards the end of the subseries. Reading the subseries in order makes me more aware of the character development. 3mo
kwmg40 @julesG Yes, that is definitely an advantage of reading each subseries one at a time! 3mo

Rincewind finds new trouble in the land down under. And the rest of the wizards from UU have their own quest.

Pratchett‘s humor was ever present, but this is one of the ones I struggled with. The jokes were funny, but I knew I‘d enjoy it more if I had proper context. The two storylines took a little too long to connect for my tastes. But I did love Rincewind‘s ending here (& the platypus). I think I just need to read it again in print. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

julesG @BarbaraJean No worries! 🤣🤣 3mo
willaful It's interesting to see the progression of the wizards from Sourcery, in which they were generally evil and the stakes were really high, to this one, where they're a lovable bunch of fuddy-duddies. (IIRC, Lord Vetenari also progressed somewhat in that manner.) I still think the Rincewind books are kind of thin, but this one was certainly very funny. 3mo

TheSpineView Poor Rincewind he can never caught a break. As usual, the subtle humor was really well done. I thought the political undertones were especially good in this story. I still think Rincewind in some ways reminds me of Inspector Clousreau from The Pink Panther. 3mo

julesG No worries! No worries! 🤣🤣 I really liked to see the faculty of UU struggling outside their hallowed halls. And they actually cared for the librarian. 😍 3mo
kwmg40 This was a fun one. Having spent a good number of years in academia, I love the scenes involving the UU faculty. Pratchett is great at showing the ridiculousness of academic life. One gripe I have about the Rincewind books is that there are so few female characters. 3mo
julesG @kwmg40 Equal Rites comes to mind. 😉 The UU/Rincewind books definitely have a lack of female characters. 3mo
kwmg40 @JulesG Yes, the Witches series does balance things out! 3mo
BarbaraJean @julesG @kwmg40 I think I liked this one better than the previous ones because of the half faculty half Rincewind balance! I enjoyed the bits with the faculty far more than the Rincewind bits. Especially the Senior Wrangler and Mrs. Whitlow 😂 And the poor Librarian! 3mo
julesG @BarbaraJean yes, the faculty 'going for a team-building excursion' balanced it out a bit. 3mo

Rincewind being Rincewind. This time on the continent with the kangaroos where there's no water, but lots of beer, and everyone says "no worries".

I'm looking forward to the #OokBOokClub discussion.

TheSpineView Finished yesterday. This was fabulous! 3mo

Another Rincewind book for #OokBookClub, and this one also came up as my July #BookSpin! There was a bit more depth to this one—more going on than just the jokey bits, with some good commentary on the use of power, and the impact of a “revolution.”

TheAromaofBooks I just finished this one this past week as well! I liked but didn't love it. Which is kind of how I've felt about all the Discworld books I've read so far. One a month feels like the right pace for me lol 4mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I feel like I got spoiled in having read Pratchett‘s Tiffany Aching books years ago—they‘re so good!! Rincewind is very “meh” to me. But I do want to read the rest of Pratchett, and once a month with the group works for me, too! 4mo
julesG @BarbaraJean I'm glad we're reading the Rincewind books first. Then they are out of the way. 😬 As for the pacing, I could easily read one Pratchett a week. But I'd need a longer break after a few months. 4mo
