julesG Okay, I'll start. 🤣🤣 Sourcery isn't my favourite Discworld adventure. Rincewind isn't my favourite hero. But, I love how he's bumbling about and accidentally saving the world. 6d

TheAromaofBooks This was my first Discworld book, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. So I was glad to see a lot of reviews saying this wasn't one of the best 😂 I did appreciate the humor and unique characters, so I'm excited to read more. 6d
julesG @TheAromaofBooks Glad you liked it. 6d
Deblovestoread I‘m the same as Sarah. My first Pratchett and it was ok. I am looking forward to the next one to get more familiar with Discworld. 6d
willaful I'm not a huge Rincewind fan (nor is my mom, a huge Pratchett fangirl. ;-) ) so I suggest the newcomers try again, perhaps when we get to the Witches or the Watch books. Or Death, Death is great. Lol.

I read this last month by mistake and don't remember my thoughts much, except there seemed to be maybe some inspiration for “Good Omens.“ Anyone else agree?
6d
julesG @willaful I agree. There are some things that appear in Good Omens. But not only from this book, there are elements from other Discworld novels (especially the ones set in AM) that made it into GO in some way. 6d
BookWrym The Death books are my favourite. Does anyone else here want their own real live luggage? 6d
TheSpineView Not quit finished reading but close enough for discussions. I agree with everyone that this is not my favorite book. However, I thought as I was reading that it reminded me of the movie Pink Panther. Thinking specifically about Inspector Clouseau. There are some similarities between the two. Sorcery was first published in 1988 according to GoodReads. Which is after the first movie with Peter Seller's. I wonder if he drew inspiration from it?? 6d
kwmg40 I'm still working on my reread of this book but thought I'd jump into the discussion anyhow. Rincewind isn't a favourite, but I love all appearances of The Luggage. The Librarian is also a great character. 6d
julesG @BookWrym I'd love to have my own Luggage. 6d
julesG @TheSpineView Now that you mention it 🤔 I see the connection. 6d
julesG @kwmg40 Ook! 6d
BarbaraJean This is my first foray into Discworld outside of Tiffany Aching and Mort, and I agree--not my favorite. It was fun and it made me laugh, but Rincewind felt lackluster. It took me until the upside-down magic carpet and the half-brick-in-a-sock before I was really on board with Rincewind. 😂 @TheSpineView The comparison to Pink Panther actually endears Rincewind to me a bit more! Maybe he just needs an outrageous French accent. 😆 5d
TheSpineView @BarbaraJean Too funny!! 🤣🤣🤣 5d

#Discworld

Really enjoyed my reread. The audio is fantastic. The jingle for the footnotes worked really well, the story held up and I am looking forward to the discussion next month.

What # are we using for this read? Is there an easy way to tag everyone?

Just a friendly reminder that we are setting off on the second round around the #Discworld today with #Sourcery.

Looking forward to our discussion next month!

PS: this book might work for some of the #52bookclub24 bonus prompts for April - I'm definitely using it for "desert you"

julesG Would have tagged you all earlier, but Litsy wasn't willing. 1mo
BookmarkTavern Yay! I‘m so excited! (edited) 1mo
TheSpineView @julesG That happens some times. 1mo
Deblovestoread Sometimes it doesn‘t want to play nice. I‘m very excited as a first time reader of these books. 💜🧙💜 1mo
BookWrym I have hit the audiobook already and the narration is great. Read by Colin Morgan, Bill Nighy & Peter Serafinowicz. The footnotes have their own little jingle and I am loving it. Having previously read the paperbacks I am finding audio a delightful way to revisit. Plans for this read along will be whatever format I can my hands on. 1mo
julesG @BookWrym Same here. I previously listened to the Nigel Planer narration, but have the new one queued up for this round. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! This will be my first time reading a Pratchett book. I'm so interested to try out his writing!! 1mo
willaful D'oh! I thought the discussion was this month and just finished it. I hope I remember something to discuss. 😂 1mo
julesG @willaful I'm sure you will. 😂 1mo
rretzler @willaful I finished it on the date we were to have started! I had totally forgotten what quick and easy reads these were. 1mo
rretzler @BookWrym Also loving that footnote jingle! I wish ALL audiobooks had that! 1mo

Chrissyreadit I‘ve not read any Discworld books- should i read The Color of Magic first? 2mo
julesG @Chrissyreadit No. Pratchett himself said to start with Sourcery and read the first two novels later when you know your way around the Discworld a bit. 1mo
Chrissyreadit ok- ordering now. 1mo
BarbaraJean Somehow I missed this post, but I'm seeing the tag pop up on Litsy and so I investigated. 😁 Would you add me to the tag list? Thank you! 2w

Please be mindful of spoilers. We have readers new to Sir Terry who haven‘t read all of his books. When referencing his other work, please keep this in mind for our new-to-Pratchett friends. Thank you! Have fun!

julesG Okay. I'll start. 😁. I quite liked this. Not my favourite, but I liked re/reading it, for the first time in English. Did anyone think JK Rowling might have got a few ideas from this book? Elite school/university just for magicians, a great hall, enchanted building, a talking hat,... To name only a few things that I remember off the top of my head. 6y
dariazeoli I am just not very fond of Rincewind, so after a couple of 4 stars I was back to “meh” on this one. @julesG I definitely thought of Rowling when we were first introduced to the university a couple of books ago. Now I‘m convinced she‘s a Discworld fan! 6y
julesG @dariazeoli I forgot to jump into the old discussion, so I thought of bringing it up now. Since we're talking of JKR, maybe Rincewind was the blueprint for Filch? 6y
DGRachel @julesG @dariazeoli This sent me into a Google rabbit hole. The Discworld books are not one of the influences that JKR acknowledges, so if she was influenced by his books, it was either unconscious or something she is in denial about. 6y
julesG @DGRachel I never even thought to Google it. Thanks. 6y
dariazeoli @julesG @DGRachel There‘s some interesting hits down that Google hole! 6y
Soubhiville I agree with @dariazeoli , this was a weaker story for me after the last couple books. I did enjoy the deeper look into how Discworld‘s magic works, and I always love the librarian. 6y
DGRachel @dariazeoli Yes, there are definitely some interesting threads to follow with that particular Google search. I find it interesting how the media tends to create “feuds” where none exist. 6y
Laura317 I thought it was so-so. I didn‘t enjoy the story. Maybe I was tired of Rincewind? I always love the Librarian (Oook!). @julesG I think that Rowling must be a DIscWorld fan, even after reading @DGRachel ‘s googling. It just seems too coincidental. Happy to see Death toward the end. I kinda hoped he‘d put Rincewind out of (my?) misery. 😂 6y
julesG @Laura317 Agree to all of this. I think JKR drew inspiration from Discworld. Rincewind 🙈 6y
gossamerchild This is so funny, because I actually found myself looking Rincewind so much more in this book. In general, though, I agree. He is super annoying. His neuroses must be growing on me 😂😂 6y
Aimeesue Rincewind's just made that way. He's supposed to be annoying, which he is exceedingly good at. I'm not his biggest fan either, but I ADORE The Luggage! And the Librarian, of course. 6y
Aimeesue @julesG To be fair, boarding schools are kind of a thing in Great Britain, right? With a long and storied history. They show up in Skippy Dies, A Little Princess, Miss Pym Disposes, Nicholas Nickleby, Never Let Me Go, Old Filth, Brideshead Revisited and on and on and on. Given that and your basic British, Scottish, and Celtic mythology - Aurthurian legend, wizards, witches, druids, etc., it's kind of surprising that the two haven't merged before. 6y
khooliha I love Rincewind and found a lot of his personal stuff very relatable on this reread. The goofy parody stuff around him? I could have done without that. This book mostly felt unbalanced, with neither half of the story feeling especially fleshed out. Oh, and welcome to the party Vetinari! 6y
Chrys @khoiliha thank you for putting how I felt in words. Rincewind personally was fun to read, but the stories needed more details to feel complete 6y
hgrimes I was very into this book at the beginning and then it went in a direction that failed to hold my attention. There were still a lot of funny bits though. I‘m intrigued by the Luggage and hope we learn more about him later. tbh, Unseen University doesn‘t really remind me of Hogwarts outside of being a wizard school. Terry Pratchett is such a rockstar fantasy author though that it would surprise me if JKR wasn‘t in some ways influenced by him. (edited) 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Now I just need to catch up on my reading. 😂 (edited) 6y
Avanders If you didn't tag already: @LitsyHappenings ☺️ 6y
DGRachel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa No worries. I was just posting this a favor to the original hostess, but I haven‘t read the book either. I tried Mort and bailed. I think Pratchett is either not for me or not for me at this time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel that‘s true with everything I think. I usually like his, but I have to be in the mood for it too. Lately I‘ve just overbooked myself so I‘m about two behind here...Mort and Sorcery now. Hopefully later this month I can carve out some time. 6y
julesG @DGRachel Are you suggesting that Pratchett is a "Marmite-Author"? https://youtu.be/JFLHialhZ8c 6y
DGRachel @julesG OMG!! That video! I‘m dying! I absolutely was not equating Sir Terry with Marmite. I‘m sure there‘s a middle ground with his work, but I think I‘m just not in the right frame of mind right now to appreciate his sense of humor. 6y
Laura317 @DGRachel I found that listening to them is more entertaining- especially those that feature The Watch and Death. If you have a library card, check out the audio sometime. Maybe then you will find them more to your taste? 6y
DGRachel @laura317 I may try that once I get through The Stand. Thanks for the recommendation! 6y
Chrys I am just at so-so for the book overall, but I believe I actually like Rincewind now. Like others I am finding that my mood plays a large part in how I feel about these books. So far Equal Rites has definitely been my favorite. 6y
julesG @Laura317 @DGRachel - agree, the audiobooks are very entertaining, even Rincewind is mildly funny on audio. 😵 6y
julesG @DGRachel Glad TP is not a love or hate author. But for me, there are a few "Marmite - authors" out there. ? 6y
