There was an eighth son of an eighth son. He was, quite naturally, a wizard. And there it should have ended. However (for reasons we'd better not go into), he had seven sons. And then he had an eighth son...a wizard squared...a source of magic...a Sourcerer. SOURCERY SEES THE RETURN OF RINCEWIND AND THE LUGGAGE AS THE DISCWORLD FACES ITS GREATEST-AND FUNNIEST-CHALLENGE YET.

I might have enjoyed this more if I hadn't read it in stops and starts. But I couldn't get into the ebook version so I switched to audio through Spotify, but then I ran out of hours for the month and had to wait to finish 😅
ANYWAY the Discworld itself is interesting to me, I just felt this particular story dragged a bit. Looking forward to trying a different adventure in this series.

Almost halfway through, I was having a terrible time finding the motivation to read this ebook. I liked the story well enough but I finally realized that the fact it has no clear chapters puts me off so badly!
I managed to find the audiobook through Spotify & I'm already enjoying the listening experience so much more! I won't have enough hours this month to finish the whole thing but will catch up with #OokBOokClub discussions soon @julesG

julesG Don't worry. The no chapters thing keeps tripping me up too. And then I end up reading the whole book in one go anyway and it doesn't matter. 6mo

Not my favorite of Pratchett but still enjoyed. As I stated previously, it reminded me of the movie Pink Panther. 3.5⭐️

julesG Okay, I'll start. 🤣🤣 Sourcery isn't my favourite Discworld adventure. Rincewind isn't my favourite hero. But, I love how he's bumbling about and accidentally saving the world. 6mo

TheAromaofBooks This was my first Discworld book, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. So I was glad to see a lot of reviews saying this wasn't one of the best 😂 I did appreciate the humor and unique characters, so I'm excited to read more. 6mo
julesG @TheAromaofBooks Glad you liked it. 6mo
Deblovestoread I‘m the same as Sarah. My first Pratchett and it was ok. I am looking forward to the next one to get more familiar with Discworld. 6mo
willaful I'm not a huge Rincewind fan (nor is my mom, a huge Pratchett fangirl. ;-) ) so I suggest the newcomers try again, perhaps when we get to the Witches or the Watch books. Or Death, Death is great. Lol.

I read this last month by mistake and don't remember my thoughts much, except there seemed to be maybe some inspiration for “Good Omens.“ Anyone else agree?
6mo
julesG @willaful I agree. There are some things that appear in Good Omens. But not only from this book, there are elements from other Discworld novels (especially the ones set in AM) that made it into GO in some way. 6mo
BookWrym The Death books are my favourite. Does anyone else here want their own real live luggage? 6mo
TheSpineView Not quit finished reading but close enough for discussions. I agree with everyone that this is not my favorite book. However, I thought as I was reading that it reminded me of the movie Pink Panther. Thinking specifically about Inspector Clouseau. There are some similarities between the two. Sorcery was first published in 1988 according to GoodReads. Which is after the first movie with Peter Seller's. I wonder if he drew inspiration from it?? 6mo
kwmg40 I'm still working on my reread of this book but thought I'd jump into the discussion anyhow. Rincewind isn't a favourite, but I love all appearances of The Luggage. The Librarian is also a great character. 6mo
julesG @BookWrym I'd love to have my own Luggage. 6mo
julesG @TheSpineView Now that you mention it 🤔 I see the connection. 6mo
julesG @kwmg40 Ook! 6mo
BarbaraJean This is my first foray into Discworld outside of Tiffany Aching and Mort, and I agree--not my favorite. It was fun and it made me laugh, but Rincewind felt lackluster. It took me until the upside-down magic carpet and the half-brick-in-a-sock before I was really on board with Rincewind. 😂 @TheSpineView The comparison to Pink Panther actually endears Rincewind to me a bit more! Maybe he just needs an outrageous French accent. 😆 6mo
TheSpineView @BarbaraJean Too funny!! 🤣🤣🤣 6mo
peanutnine Late to the discussion here but I finally finished a few days ago 😅 This was my first Discworld novel and I thought it was just okay. @BarbaraJean I actually kinda liked Rincewind at the beginning and then he slowly annoyed me more and more lol. @kwmg40 I also loved the Librarian - such a voice of reason! @willaful I definitely got some Good Omens vibes, especially the scenes with the four horsemen of the apocalypse 4mo
julesG @peanutnine Rincewind is not exactly a fan favourite. But there are lots of wonderful secondary characters. Ook! 4mo

Pratchett has been on my radar for quite some time, but I've never actually jumped in. So when @julesg said that the #OokBookClub was starting over, this seemed like a great time to give his writing a whirl. I enjoyed but wasn't mind-blown by this one, but the consensus seems to be that it isn't his best, and this was still an easy pick. I'm looking forward to working through some of these, as I found the characters, world-building, and humor ⬇

Librarybelle Nice! I‘ve yet to read anything by Pratchett! 6mo
BarbaraJean Ohhh, I hadn't seen that #OokBookClub was starting over... I may have to jump into that! Because I need more buddy reads 😂 I've only read Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series, and then Mort--and I loved all of them. 6mo

When sourcery returns to the Disc, & throws the wizards all into chaos, what is a cowardly Rincewind to do but put together a ragtag group to maybe save the world? Or run away, one of the two.

A bit of a slow start, & a rushed/abrupt ending, but fun exploring the Disc anyway. I really found myself charmed by the side characters, & laughing at the cameos towards the end. Though I had hoped for more between Coin & Rincewind. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

We meet Rincewind again—a wizard who doesn‘t really do magic. Together with Conina, daughter of Cohen (who doesn‘t want to be a barbarian, even if she can‘t help it), and Nijel the Destroyer (who'd really want to be one), they‘re going to save the world from a little kid with a nasty stick.

“Talent just defines what you do,” he said. “It doesn‘t define what you are. Deep down, I mean. When you know what you are, you can do anything.”

Not my fave Discworld book and definitely not a memorable addition to the series. Lots of trademark Pratchett humour but it lacked a lot of the satirical insights of his other books. Also, Rincewind is just not one of my favorite characters. However, it‘s really cool to see Pratchett develop as a writer through this series, and I love seeing the Discworld evolve and grow into the fantastic series I‘ve enjoyed for years.

Book 33

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially in the hands of a child.

I like this book the 8th son of an 8th son is no mere wizard.

This whole mindset makes me wonder if there's any truth to the magic in the sphere world around the 7th son of a 7th son. My husband is the 7th child and a son (though he has 3 brothers and 3 step sisters so it probably doesn't count) not that it would matter anyway since we only have 3 daughters.

I think a prolonged break from Rincewind is in order...this book got quite a few chuckles out of me but I think it went a bit too off the rails even by usual Discworld standards. a shame, since I rather liked Conina and some of the stuff with Al Khali, but it didn't feel like this book knew where it was going.

I feel like Pratchett took a hodgepodge of ideas and scenes from his previous 4 books and smooshed them together to make this book. It's not bad but it doesn't really bring anything new to the series. But even if it's not Pratchett's best it was still amusing and I liked the characters.

Finished up Sourcery on the way back from Olympic today, and even my good mood from all the mountains and hiking couldn't make me enjoy it. The book started out beautifully, lots of humor, an interesting antagonist, but the middle went downhill. Two- dimensional supporting characters, predictable plot, and one of those "forget it ever happened" endings. Ugh! I gave it a so-so because the first half really was funny.
