Chasing the Boogeyman
Chasing the Boogeyman | Richard Chizmar
The New York Times bestselling coauthor of Gwendy's Button Box brings his signature "thrilling, page-turning" (Michael Koryta, author of How It Happened) prose to this story of small-town evil that combines the storytelling of Stephen King with the true-crime suspense of Michelle McNamara. In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman--and he's playing games with them. For a once peaceful community trapped in the depths of paranoia and suspicion, it feels like a nightmare that will never end. Recent college graduate Richard Chizmar returns to his hometown just as a curfew is enacted and a neighborhood watch is formed. In the midst of preparing for his wedding and embarking on a writing career, he soon finds himself thrust into the real-life horror story. Inspired by the terrifying events, Richard writes a personal account of the serial killer's reign of terror, unaware that these events will continue to haunt him for years to come. A clever, terrifying, and heartrending work of metafiction, Chasing the Boogeyman is the ultimate marriage between horror fiction and true crime. Chizmar's "brilliant...absolutely fascinating, totally compelling, and immediately poignant" (C.J. Tudor, New York Times bestselling author) writing is on full display in this truly unique novel that will haunt you long after you turn the final page.

Could this be the book that finally breaks my interminable slump? I dunno. I read it over the course of two days. It‘s a novel that reads like true crime with the author recalling a string of murders which happened in his hometown the summer he was 23. I thought it was excellent and a total page turner and it‘s been a l-o-n-g time since I‘ve said that about a book.

I wasn‘t actually planning on re-reading this one, but I decided that I would best enjoy BECOMING THE BOOGEYMAN with it fresh in my mind! And though I did remember who is arrested in the 2019 portion, many of the details felt new to me and I greatly enjoyed the blend of fiction with fact in this true crime format that makes for a quick and genuinely thrilling read! Looking forward to seeing what will be covered in the next book!

Clever, suspenseful horror fiction written in the style of true crime. Who Is the killer abducting teen girls & posing them in the quiet spots of the author‘s real, seemingly safe home town? The author wraps his own true story of life as a young writer living with his super nice parents into this eerie page-turner. True-crime-style photos of the fictional investigation add a fun touch. 5 stars. #serialkillers #TeamSlaughter #31by31 #scarathalon

Enjoying this serial killer novel rolled into clever fiction in the style of true crime. The writing is so good that the murders of teenage girls in the writer‘s real small town seem believable. Thanks to the review by @vivastory I gave this hybrid a try. I‘m glad I did. Chizmar tries something new by blending his real 1980s small town Maryland nostalgia with a fictional tale of serial murder (complete with convincing period-style photos). The characters are bland, even the nonfiction ones, but the mystery is very creepy. I wanted an innovative ending and was left dissatisfied, but overall this novel nails that special true-crime “feel.”

vivastory Yeah, this one left me wanting more. I saw recently he was working on a follow-up. I might be intrigued to read it just to wrap it up but I don't know if I will lol 2y

I really enjoyed this! It's a fake true crime book that's full of staged pictures and "facts" but is also full of real things from the author's life. There's a serial killer terrorizing Richard's hometown and the cops can't catch the killer. Richard writes a book about the Boogeyman's victims and their families.

Very interesting concept for a book. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this, and to be honest, I hope true crime fiction becomes more popular because this was such a thrilling read.

It didn't have as many horror aspects as I thought it would, but it's definitely still a creepy read.

4¼⭐
While I found this to be quite clever at times, it did have some moments that were slow, where the author went off-topic and just talked about the town and all its mundane happenings. Although, I‘m sure that some would find that actually makes for a better story. Either way…I wouldn‘t discourage anyone from giving this a try, you totally should just for its unique-ish storytelling style. ⬇⬇⬇

AudiobookingWithLeah There are accompanying pics with the audio, I‘m assuming the book has the pics as you go along with the reading of it, on audio there all just there together. So, I suggest not looking at them until after you finish listening, otherwise, the ending will be spoiled. The pics actually feel like real crime scene photos and they really bring the story to life. 3y

Mehso-so

Unpopular opinion, but I found the majority of this boring. There were some good parts, but I feel like there was so much unnecessary info-dump that I ended up skimming those parts. There was one part that gave me the creeps but that was it. Giving a so-so for that creepy part, the parts about the victims (morbid?) and the chapter with the interview with the Boogeyman.
