This started strong for me, but then some of the dialog and characterization was bothering me. Also, does he understand how little 7 yr olds are? So sadly DNF‘d. Another book off of my #Roll100 list!

A soft pick for this #roll100 read (I was really torn between pick & so-so) - I was really into it at first, very reminiscent of NOS4R2 / IT / Stranger Things - but I felt like the author was pushing his agenda a bit too much and also really needed a better edit as there was far too much repetition.

What‘s that thing called when your TBR pile/stacks/shelves/mountain is already out of control (or under just the right amount of control by which I mean it hasn‘t fallen over & crushed anyone) but you see a bunch of books on sale & simply can‘t resist adding to your already teetering pile of books waiting to be read? Because it me. Picked up all of these on steep discount. The signed copy of the tagged book was a surprise. And the TBR pile grows…

Just finished this chonk. I couldn‘t stop til I got to the end. Some mixed reviews here, but I enjoyed it. Gave me a few weird dreams, which can be fun. Very imaginative story about overcoming demons within. The end left my imagination reeling. Some spots were maybe over the top & some people said it‘s too long, but to me it was worth every word. Hope there‘s a movie someday. Perks ended up as a great film adaptation, this one is so different tho.

For such a long book I found this very atmospheric and it really kept my attention. I liked the classic horror tropes (otherworldly deer that aren‘t deer, the forest at the end of your garden, the dreams) done very well. I will say (I dont think this is a spoiler?) it took some unexpectedly very Christian turns. I guess that‘ll make this look better or worse to different readers but I found it neutral, just surprising

Dnf it. Couldn't do it. I was halfway, and I had enough. Maybe someone else would like it, but it was just not for me.

ElizaMarie I can see how this would be a #DNF book. I enjoyed it but... it took a bit part of me to muster through some of it, then it would get better, then a lull and then better. But I was determined! Ha. Hope your next book choice is a great one! 2y

Well, hmm. This one was really good for the 1st half. It told a story about a boy named Christopher & the strange fixation he develops on The Mission Street Woods. I was hooked as the past & present events began to merge & Christopher's experiences became more alarming. I loved the evolution of the supporting characters. The 2nd half of the book took a religious turn & I lost interest. But I had read too far to DNF. ⭐⭐⭐Maybe it's too smart for me?

JackOBotts I have to agree with you; I struggled with the back half as well and just slogged through to the end. 2y
Reggie No it‘s not too smart for you, it was too long and nobody dies so there are no stakes. I had a similar experience with this when I read it. I was just glad it was over. 2y

Finally finished my May #bookspin and I really enjoyed it! My reading has really taken a hit this year; I need to get back into a rhythm with it again which is why this chunkster took me even longer than normal.

That said it was creative and it had some interesting twists. I loved a lot of the characters and all the nods to the Pittsburgh area was fun being that‘s my hometown

This is the first book I‘ve read that genuinely scared me enough I had to stop reading after EVERY PAGE. I was able to pick out a few quotes:

“We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.”

“Adults dont remember how powerful they are because somewhere along the line, they were shamed for their imagination.”

“Everyone gets an ending. Whether or not it‘s happy is up to them.”

“Heaven and Hell are not destinations. They are decisions.”

They best word I can think of to describe this book is…”alright”. I was a little worried going in after reading some of the reviews, but the religious aspect wasn‘t as overwhelming as I expected. Could it be 300 pages shorter? For sure. Every time you think it‘s wrapping up…something else happens. Gets kind of repetitive, but overall a decent read.

I really loved the first 200 pages or so. Crisply written, eerie, engaging. But then it just kept…going. And when the final act arrived, I lost all immersion (especially when some of the twists were revealed). It‘s well-written, but didn‘t end up working for me in the end.

Reggie This book could have been 300 pages shorter and it would have been good. 3y

A perfect spooky read for October, I devoured these 700 pages in two days. With hints of Stephen King and Stranger Things, the creep factor is high and left me shaken over and over again. As a lapsed Catholic, the small town of Mill Grove was achingly familiar to my own hometown; weekly CCD and the questions of morality and redemption could have come from my own childhood. Even when the book veers into intense religious allegory, I was hooked. 5⭐️

For the first time in ages, I finished 2 books in a single week, and this weighty tome was over 700 pages, so that was no small feat. I really wanted to like this book. I was expecting a horror novel that spoke to the human experience, and was stoked when I noticed metaphor within the story, thinking it would cover spiritual issues as a whole. Sadly, it turned into a thinly veiled Christian-only allegory, which really isn't my thing.

What approach do you use when tackling a chonky book? I want to read these so bad but the idea of holding a book with that many pages for days makes me feel some type of way...

Any tips? Tricks? Hacks? How do you mentally prep to tackle a chonkster?

Twainy I‘ve read & own 3 of those hard covers (BOTM) and I‘ve also gotten the 3 audiobooks from the library. Thank you Libby. I tend to do a mixture or I‘d never finish them. Multitask with the audio all day and relax at bedtime with the book. 4y
Prairiegirl_reading Chunksters are scary!! I usually plan one a year! I‘m trying to be okay with the idea of slow and steady but that never works for me. However, The Heart‘s Invisible Furies doesn‘t read like a chunkster. It moves pretty quickly and it‘s so good. I say start with that one. 😄 4y
Prairiegirl_reading @Twainy yea I agree a mix is helpful. 4y
See All 18 Comments
JamieArc I just plan on it going slow and being okay with that, while I read other faster books as well. That being said, Hearts Invisible Furies and The Poisonwood Bible definitely didn‘t feel like chunksters while I was reading them. You might be pleasantly surprised! 4y
Scochrane26 If it‘s a good story, it won‘t seem as long. Poisonwood Bible is one of my all-time faves—I was surprised at how chunky it looks in your pic. 4y
rsteve388 I try to read, one large book a month. Early on in the month helps.cause it gives me the rest of the month to read other books. 4y
Johanna414 I'm going to heartily second the above recommendation- see if you can get your hands on the audiobook from your library and then go back and forth between the two however works for you 4y
xicanti If I know I won‘t find the story too gripping but I‘m still interested enough to read it, I tackle the book in chunks: another 100 pages or so every time I finish something else. If the story‘s so gripping I can‘t bear to pit it aside but I also can‘t stand the hand pain from holding such an unwieldy tome, I see if the library has an ebook I can borrow and I read that copy instead. 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve read all but Imaginary Friend! I too have #PageCountPhobia but I promise, when a book is great the pages fly!!!! I highly recommend all 4 😍agreed, audio helps to keep it moving and engaging. I‘d start with either Hearts or Bible...both are in my top 10 ❤️Happy Reading!!!! 4y
Reggie I try and run through them so that way I feel invested. Oof, Imaginary Friend, some of us were divided on that one. Good luck!!! 4y
MicheleinPhilly I‘ll usually reserve a weekend or vacation day to begin. That way I can tackle a good portion and become fully invested before real life and responsibilities intrude. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Different people find different ways work. I feel I must be invested in the story to keep me moving. Or be disciplined to read a chapter-a-day. Or do a buddy read so can encourage each other to progress. I loved the John Boyne btw. Good luck! 4y
sb3626 See I would say I try to read it in 50 pages increments and then to the end of a chapter after that but I‘ve had the Goldfinch on hold for awhile so I know I need to get back to that 😅 4y
NikkiM5 I pick the date I want to finish the book, then divide the number of pages by the number of days until the selected finish date. Then I have a tab-type bookmark showing what page I should read to each day. And I move that tab the required amount of pages every morning (even if I didn‘t read the required amount). Lol sounds complex when i type it out 😅 4y
Freespirit I chip away at it. Maybe a chapter a day. I usually have another book on the go to take in my handbag. Good luck 👍🏼 4y
FlemingGirl I switch between reading and listening to the audio book. I always start reading so that the narration doesn‘t unduly influence my perceptions. Then once I have a chapter or two down I will listen while driving or while my hands are busy doing something else. Big tomes go fast this way. 4y

What. A. Trash. Heap. Sorry but this was a mess. It started out good but quickly tanked in the middle. I was 40% done thinking “how have I got this much left?” I was disgusted by calling the ONE Native American woman a Sq*** to only referring to her as “the Hot Indian” This was some Christian novel disguised as horror. If you aren‘t into women being treated like crap and written as “saints or whores” and preached at, then skip this one. Long asf 2

I know this has mixed reviews but I liked it. It's long but in a good way. The characters are young but that adds to how unsettling it is. It's creepy as hell and well worth the read. I listened along and the audiobook is fantastically narrated.

There was some repetition that got on my nerves and the ending was....well he went there and it's not my favourite twist but I still loved it.

This is completely different from Chobsky‘s debut novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower but still has the great writing and great character. I could not put this behemoth of a book down. I was so hooked with the storyline and the characters along with Chobsky‘s writing style. A lot of characters but you can easily decider who is who.

39% in and I finally decided to bail after reading a ton of reviews that said it only gets worse. The beginning was gripping in a Stranger Things meets Stephen King sort of way, but then it just drags on. It also has an unrealistically mature main character who is also a seven year old boy. Yes, I realize the book itself is unrealistic in many ways, but this part in particular didn‘t need to be so unbelievable.
