This should be viewed as a quintessential piece of feminist literature due to its early depictions of societal views/stigmas toward women's mental health. In this unforgettably powerful and important story our narrator, a paradoxical woman, gives a first hand look into her daily life living with mental illness. This is definitely one of those narratives that takes time to dissect, evaluate and discuss. I highly recommend you give it a read.

I just couldn't get into her writing. It was like H Rider Haggard - she spent the first 17 pages of a short story setting the scene and it wasn't exactly riveting stuff... it was literally about wallpaper... not for me at all

Ruthiella Yup, I was also less than impressed by this. Good to know it‘s place and importance in literature, but I didn‘t enjoy it. 3y

Creepy in a way I didn‘t prepare myself for as I decided it was sensible to sit down and read this alone in my home in the middle of the night. I didn‘t think it possible for a written story to evoke fear in me in the same way as a film or a game but this short story absolutely horrified me- and that was before I started unpicking the commentary! A brilliant piece and new personal favourite, I won‘t be forgetting this any time soon.

This story is always so incredible every time I read it. The imagery, the writing craft, the unreliable narrator, the reflection of the time period, the creepiness, the perfect rising action, climax, and resolution in one final page, my goodness it‘s the perfect story! Highly recommend to ANY reader since it‘s so versatile in what a reader can get out of it.

Creepy, haunting...

This short story from a 19th century feminist was a poignant reminder of how misunderstood both women and mental illness have been throughout history.

Cosmos_Moon_River Love this vintage cover! I had to read this back in HS, but want to revisit since it was just referenced in Mental by Jaime Lowe that I am reading now. Have it in a short story compilation TBR. (edited) 5y

The Yellow Wallpaper remains one of my favorite short stories, and I am equally disturbed every time I re-read it.

In the midst of moving with her husband, the narrator cannot help but stare at her yellow wallpaper. Something is wrong with this paper and just gets worse with every page.

The color. The smell. And wait... is there a face behind the paper? A woman trying to get out?

Loved the downward spiral into pure insanity. Five stars!

BookwormM This is an amazing short story really evocative 6y

Ok, #ScreamsByMail folks, I have done a bit of research on horror novels written by women and discovered these. Any preference? Read this short story in 1 sitting. It is the story of a woman's descent into madness following the birth of her child and the subsequent enforced rest. She is taken to a country house to recover and spends most of her time confined to a room with horrid yellow wallpaper. The description of the room makes me think what happens to the woman has happened in the past. A creepy, thought provoking read.

Copwithabook This goes down as one of my all time favorites. I‘d love to see someone make it into a movie! 7y
Cosyreader Great story - I reread this the other week and there was a short bio accompanying it. I was sad to learn that she went through this in real life (confined to her room for weeks after giving birth) because people didn‘t understand or tolerate post-natal depression 🙁 7y

I know Serial has it but it's missing the intro and the italics.

I had curtains as a child which belonged in the nursery with the yellow wallpaper. Hours spent tracing those lines. Such busy flowers!

Out of the three short stories I read this month this one is my absolute favorite. Nothing like a little insanity and horrid wallpaper to make you fall down a sinister rabbit hole. With many symbolic touches to the ideals of feminism this story escalates with each page and by the end has you wondering if you are apart of the yellow wallpaper.

A good fast creepy and disturbing read--just two issues on Serial Reader. I'd been meaning to read it since reading 'The Evening Spider' (the book tagged below) that also featured a 'rest cure' for what was likely postpartum depression that pushed a woman into madness. I'm glad I finally worked it in--Gilman was definitely ahead of her time. 👍📚

This is a haunting story.
A cautionary tale, if you want, with elements of Gothic suspense the story describes a women's downward spiral to madness brought on by neglect and a forced separation from what she can call hers as her husband ignores her and the problem and her daughter is cared for by someone else.
The story is so well written it becomes timeless considering how some are still being treated this way.
