The Third Volume in the Epic Dark Tower Series The Waste Lands "In 1978, Stephen King introduced the world to the last gunslinger, Roland of Gilead. Nothing has been the same since. More than twenty years later, the quest for the Dark Tower continues to take readers on a wildly epic ride. Through parallel worlds and across time, Roland must brave desolate wastelands and endless deserts, drifting into the unimaginable and the familiar. A classic tale of colossal scope crossing over terrain from The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, Insomnia, The Talisman, Black House, Hearts in Atlantis, Salem s Lot, and other familiar King haunts the adventure takes hold with the turn of each page. And the tower awaits...." Roland, The Last Gunslinger, moves ever closer to The Dark Tower of his dreams and nightmares as he crosses a desert of damnation in a macabre world that is a twisted image of our own. With him are those he has drawn to this world: street-smart Eddie Dean and courageous wheelchair-bound Susannah. Ahead of him are mind-rending revelations about who and what is driving him. Against him is arrayed a swelling legion of foes both more and less than human...."

Books finished in March include Four Past Midnight, The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, Needful Things, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, and Nightmares and Dreamscapes. My March pick for my #readingbracket2023 is, perhaps predictably, The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands!

The Waste Lands might be my favorite entry in The Dark Tower Series. It feels like the true beginning—the team is assembled and Roland can focus on his quest again.

King‘s world building here is fantastic; so many themes and objects that become a major part of the storyline are introduced. The final section in Lud is so well structured and perfectly paced.

And we can‘t forget about the introduction of Oy—man, I love that little billy-bumbler.

There is a scene in The Dark Tower III where Jake dreams he meets a young Eddie wearing a yellow shirt that says “Never a dull moment in Mid-World.” And I thought to myself: ‘I bet someone has turned that into a real shirt.‘

A quick Google search later, and sure enough, someone has! I found this on TeePublic. There were more designs, some that were just text like the book describes, but I‘m partial to this one with Shardik the bear.

Pikathulhu There's no way I'm not picking one of these up. Amazing find! 2y

This is a great story and an exciting continuation of the series. Thankfully, I read this series many years after it was written, as this book ends on a cliffhanger. Those who read it as it was being written had to wait five years to find out what happened to Roland and his ka-tet. How frustrating must that have been? #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

TrishB It was very frustrating! I read them as they were published, a long time from beginning to end. 2y

“Several months have passed since The Drawing of the Three, and in The Waste Lands, Roland‘s two new tet-mates have become trained gunslingers. Eddie Dean has given up heroin, and Odetta‘s two selves have joined, becoming the stronger and more balanced personality of Susannah Dean.”

As always, The Dark Tower series remains the pinnacle of King's ability to create strange and fantastic worlds, beloved characters in whose welfare the reader is deeply invested, and spellbinding narratives that urge the reader to turn the page without delay. The Waste Lands is one of my favorites in this series. The lead up to Jake's drawing is some of his best writing, and the ka-tet's escape from Lud is intense. A Key, a Rose, a 5/5.

My second journey to the Tower is proving more enjoyable than the first and that's something I didn't think was possible.

I think this is the book where the series really starts to come together. The foreshadowing I'm noticing on this re-read is creating suspense for me even though I know what's ahead.

King's ability to spin a story never ceases to amaze me.

If you haven't read this series yet do yourself a favor and add it to your TBR.

Well, i finally got some timd to finish this. Held up obviously due to the Christmas craziness.

I loved revisting my favourite book of The Dark Tower series.

Cool new characters.

Previous characters becoming more developed.

He just brings the characters to life in this one in my opinion, i can feel their emotions and it turns it into a intense page-turner.

The ka-tet has grown ever so stronger and the Tower is closer than ever..

Finished It! #doublespin for October! I enjoyed meeting Blaine the Pain. Sorry that didn't happen until the end of the book. Blaine is obviously depressed. Perhaps because he's a monorail bullet train, not a steam engine as pictured on the cover! I'm enjoying these books even if they aren't ever going to be my lifelong favorites. Something about Stephen King's authorial voice just bugs me too much to really get into his books.

🎧 I loved this book as much as the last!

Months have passed, Roland's Not dead 😝 Eddie & Susannah have trained to be gunslingers.

During Roland‘s last interaction with The Pusher in 1977 New York he altered ka by saving Jake‘s life & ending The Pusher‘s. In Roland‘s world Jake has already died, twice.

So now Roland & Jake exist in both worlds. They share a connection and both have two sets of memories driving them crazy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy Eddie, Susannah & Roland must find Jake and pull him into Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Beam to the Dark Tower.

Along their journey they come upon the ruins of a city called Lud & get caught up in the rival gangs of the Pubes & the Grays.

👇🏻
3y
Twainy To escape Lud they will need to wake Blaine (the Mono) who is a totally insane train that has a passion for riddling. They‘re in a pickle. Stump Blaine with a riddle or the suicidal AI known as Blaine will kill them all.

Charlie the Choo Choo (a children‘s book I previously reviewed here) is highlighted in this book.

5🌟 This is still likely my favorite book in the entire series. This was my first time reading it since I finished the entire series years ago (when the last book originally came out), but my third or fourth time overall. I think I enjoy it even more than I used to. Choo choo...Blaine is a pain...

The last thing I wrote about this book was more of a negative than a positive, however people began to rally around the book saying how great it was so I dig my heels in and read from page 356 to page 700 in under a week, boy am I glad I did! I ended up really enjoying this story and I am starting the next book right now. I will say that the middle of The Wastelands drug on a lot and was rather boring but redemption came in the end.

I‘ve been reading The Dark Tower series and I‘m on book 3 so far and halfway through it. I have to say this book is a chore to read at this point. I‘m not sure if I‘m the only one with this issue but as someone who always has a need to finish a book/series...this has been rough. (Also, sorry for the “book abuse” photo. I like these pocket sized books because I literally keep them in my back pocket so they tend to get a bit wore out.)

In celebration of Stephen King's newest release, If It Bleeds, i'm ranking/reviewing all ten books of his that I've read.

4. Wastelands
At 800 pages, Dark Tower book 3 definitely has some fat on it, but it wears it on top of a mass of narrative muscle (kind of a weird analogy, but whatever).
