3✨ I‘ve been wanting to read this series for a really long time. I started it when I first got it, but put it down for what ever reason more than 20 years ago. A boy and a Black Stallion get shipwrecked forming an unbreakable bond. Heartfelt and worth the wait. My main complaint is the horses name is “The Black”, and it‘s similar to other horse racing series I have read. However, it may very well be older than those other stories. #Roll100

Finished my final #middlegrademarch read last night and I really liked this one. I loved the relationship between Alec and the Black. I wasn‘t much of an animal or horse person as a kid so I don‘t think I would have liked this as much back then. Glad I finally read it.

TheBookHippie I liked it too. I didn‘t love it like Black Beauty -but as a younger reader -I can see the love of it. 2y

This was a fun adventure about a young man who bonded with a horse. I enjoyed it throughout! The lead-up to the race and the race itself made the book for me. I thought the "live coverage" of the tv/radio commentator was really well-written. And, of course, the ending was just as a reader would want it to end. I think this story would appeal to any kid, no matter how old. #ChildrensClassicRead2023 4/5⭐️

I‘ve not read any horse stories as a kid, I can say I‘m not a horse person. This book started off well, promising of adventures, even though there‘re incidents of stereotypes and many coincidences. Maybe reading it as an adult, I find the story lacks emotions and the characters unrealistic. I guess a horse-loving person, especially a child will like it, especially the bonding between Alec and ‘the Black‘.

I feel a special bond with author Farley since we both had uncles who passed their love of horses onto us. My Uncle Ninny(b&w pic)taught me how to ride when I was a kid & always laughed when I‘d have conversations with his horses! Farley received so much mail, he set up The Black Stallion Club to connect with his young fans. How cool is that! Here‘s a vintage button(eBay photo)that Farley designed in 1949.

I‘m sure I must have read this as a horse-crazy kid, but I don‘t remember much about it. I do have two related books in my library, including the edition that @TheAromaOfBooks posted about. (Unfortunately, the cover is somewhat the worse for wear.)

(Nicky insisted on being in the photo, because he‘s as big as a horse. 😹)

I never went through the horse crazy phase that some of my friends did, and I never read this as a kid. I think I appreciated some aspects more as an adult comparing certain details to what I learned about this era of horse racing when reading about Seabiscuit. Things work out a little too conveniently, but that‘s what made it such a fun listen today as I worked around the house. 🐎

Easily on my Top 10 Childhood Favorites list; I read this one over and over again growing up. I actually owned the beautifully-illustrated Big Black Horse originally, which ends when Alec and The Black make it home, so the first time I read the full novel I was astonished to find that the story continues with the epic match race. Is the story full of coincidences and basically impractical in every way? Yeah, absolutely, but it's still a fabulous ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) story that combines two of my favorite childhood-story-tropes: wilderness survival and HORSES 😂

Repost for @TheBookHippie

#CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2023 MARCH 🐴🐎

In 2019 I decided to read a new to me,
or long forgotten by me, children‘s classic daily.
One story per month every morning with my coffee.
I read a few pages, or a chapter, depending on which book I am reading and how long it is so that I have it with me every day. It has been pure zen.

Day 4: To say that I loved this book and reread the whole series multiple times does not adequately explain my feelings for The Black Stallion. This is the actual book that I read as a child. I will never get rid of it. Those endpapers were the inspiration for making and exploring equine art and I credit this book for igniting my lifelong love of horses and horseback riding.

Suet624 This book and Black Beauty were my favorites as a kid. Read them more than once. I ended up as an adult purchasing several horses. 3y

#20series20days - Day 4 - no particular order - I LOVED horse books growing up and read The Black Stallion over and over again. When my dad started working in Columbus ("the big city") sometimes we would take these magical days where we would all ride up with Dad early in the morning & hang out at a Tim Horton's playing cards & eating doughnuts until the main library opened. Then we would spend the entire day just browsing the stacks and it ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was MAGICAL.

Anyway... all that to say that that was when I discovered that there were MORE Black Stallion books! I've collected some of them over the years, but I have to admit that as the series went on, I didn't care as much for them. Some of the later books are just plain weird. Farley himself went through some big life tragedies, and it comes through in his later books where it seems like some huge catastrophe hits Alec in every ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) book. But the original book remains one of my favorites, and I also quite enjoyed the next few books, where we find out the origins of the Black and eventually see him & Alec reunited.

NB: Also pictured, some of Eleanor Estes's delightful titles & the name badge from my first van. ❤
4y
LeahBergen I read a few of these as a kid (and some Estes, too)! 4y

CrowCAH The other books are similar to the first. I just love the connection between the Black and Alec! 🐴❤️ 4y

My #funphotofriday of my first "adult" book isn't so fun but a strong memory. I was ten and my friend who was thirteen loaned me a Christian fiction book, I forget the name, it was a story about a girl who was raped. I'll never forget my discomfort. Nor will I forget when her sixteen year old brother saw me reading it. He said "Aren't you a little too young to be reading that?" I answered "Yes." He gave me his copy of the Black Stallion to read.

SusanInTiburon Great post! Sounds like a real act of kindness. 8y
Jess_Read_This @SusanInTiburon It really was! He used to make my life miserable with teasing. He was always in some sort of trouble. I think that's why this memory is so strong for me, because he behaved in a way that was so unlike him. I think I was also surprised to learn he had read anything! 8y
