Started out strong with plenty of character-building and the panic Billy and his wife feel over his very rapid and unnerving weight loss. Then it got v-e-r-y boring for the middle part, before it picked back up near the end. I mean, I really struggled with the middle part, but the end was worth it.

Not one of my King favorites, but it definitely felt like Stephen King. Up next #readingStephenKing: Cycle of the Werewolf. Going into it 100% blind!

It's difficult for me to parse my feelings on this one. Thoroughly unpleasant characters abound, coupled with copious amounts of racism and stereotypical depictions of the Romani people. At its core, the story is interesting enough, especially with the debt it owes to 1956's The Incredible Shrinking Man, for which King has expressed his love. Despite that seed of potential interest, I left this read with feelings of lingering distaste. 2/5

I was watching Jake & Fine talk on BookTube about Stephen King‘s Bachman books when this one came up. I enjoyed this one so I found an inexpensive used edition to cover & add to my library. There‘s a little shelf wear but it‘s usable. 😁 August purchase.

Yes, I‘m a cover snob (usually). So is younger son. I ordered Thinner from Book Outlet but the cover (left) was not 1) what was shown on their website and 2) not in good shape (should have been sold as a scratch and dent at a lower price). I expressed my disappointment, they refunded me partially, and I used that refund towards a reasonably priced first edition (5th printing) from eBay 🙂. We‘ll keep the PB as a reading copy for now.

ValerieAndBooks I read this long ago, way back in HS, but as a mass market PB I no longer have! 3y
Ruthiella Excellent compromise. If you collect an author‘s work, I think it‘s a good idea to invest in hardcovers. 3y
Leftcoastzen Love the original Thinner cover. I wish all vendors would post photo of the actual book you are getting, many people looking for a specific edition of the book. 3y

ValerieAndBooks @Ruthiella as long as they‘re affordable , for sure 😊 . When I was looking at Thinner on eBay, I was shocked at some of the prices for “Carrie” 😳. At the very least, find/get a cover that we like 😂. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen Right?! Sometimes it‘s like the lottery. As far as Book Outlet goes, I know not to have high expectations as they‘re a bargain/remainder outlet, but the two factors (cover and condition) combined irked me. 3y
Reggie I kind of really like the one on the left vs the one on the right. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie I‘d be happy to send it along to you if you don‘t mind it already being slightly beat up! Let me know. 3y
Nute This very same thing happened to me when I was looking for a particular edition of Sense and Sensibility. I was overjoyed when I finally located it. Couldn‘t wait to order it. Then when I opened the package...🤯😤😡 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Nute how frustrating 😡! Hope you were able to return it without any issues. 3y

A fantastic story, King does it again with his excellent use of dread. Right from the beginning, the reader understands what's going to happen but how will it end?

This book was an excellent read that I started early on a rainy day and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Billy starts losing weight and doesn't know why. As the story unfolds we find out Billy has been cursed, but he isn't the only one. 💀

I'm back! ?‍♂️

Billy, a overweight lawyer who one night while driving home runs over an gypsy woman, he's brought to trial but is acquitted because he's friends with the judge. While leaving the courthouse, an old gypsy man brushes his hand on Billy's cheek and whispers "thinner." From that moment onwards Billy starts to rapidly lose weight until his clothes are falling off him, I'll leave it there - that's all I'm going to say. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Curiouser_and_curiouser I read this 30 years ago in high school. Loved it. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Curiouser_and_curiouser I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, have you seen the movie adaptation? I've yet to watch that, I love watching the adaptations after reading a King book. 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Hi @TheNeverendingTBR possibly but if I did it was years ago. Yes, I'm always chasing movies or series of books I've just read. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Curiouser_and_curiouser A couple of my favourite adaptations of Kings work would be the TV series of 'salems Lot from 1978 with David Soul; that was just perfect and captured the atmosphere of the book perfectly. Another one would be the adaptation of the short story '1408' I recommend both! 🙋‍♂️ 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @TheNeverendingTBR oh wow! They sound like great recommendations, I'll make a note, then I'll have to get hold of the books before I do any watching. Thanks so much! 4y

What can I say? It's a King novel. There a few parts in there that I felt didn't need to be there, but I think we can all agree that King usually does that; it doesn't stop us from getting the next one, does it? Lol. This book is great. The ending, I felt, was phenomenal. I had a different thought going through my head, so I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. Definitely a 6 out of 5.

I watched the movie for this years ago and have been meaning to read the book ever since. Like many of Stephen King's stories, the book went more in-depth than the movie. This is one of the books he wrote under the pen name “Richard Bachman.“ At one point in the novel a character even said something along the lines of: “This sounds like a Stephen King book.“

So... Ladies and Gents, I have a question.

I've started three books, but because of school, I stopped all three. I want to focus on one at a time and finish them now that I'm done with school. Can you help with the order, please?

Thinner by Stephen King
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Fear the Sky by Stephen Moss (audiobook narrated by RC Bray)

The poll ends at 2:17pm Central time.

Thanks!!!

vivastory 1) Slaughter-House 5 2) Thinner 3) Fear the Sky 5y
sprainedbrain I would go by page length. Shortest to longest... that‘s how I get things done. 😂 5y
TheBookAddict 1- Fear the Sky 2- Thinner 3- Slaughter- House 5 5y
KennethTolesJr @vivastory @sprainedbrain @TheBookAddict So, I took what all three of you said into consideration, and it actually comes out to being Fear the Sky, Thinner, then Slaughterhouse-Five. This is because Fear The Sky has the least amount of pages left to be read, which means it has two votes for first. Then, Thinner got two votes for second. Thanks Peeps!! 5y

Not a favorite. I'm bummed because I loved some of his other books he wrote as Bachman (Running Man and The Long Walk were both excellent). This was a little boring, the main character kind of bland and unlikable, and a lot of the actual action happened "offscreen" and was described later.
Oh well. They can't all be winners.

“Just that one word, sent on the wafting, cloying sweetness of his breath. ‘Thinner.‘ [T]he old Gypsy reaches out and caresses his cheek with one twisted finger. His lips spread open like a wound, showing a few tombstone stumps poking out of his gums. His tongue squirms between them and then slides out to slick his grinning, bitter lips.”

BarbaraBB This is the one he wrote under a pseudonym I learned from @TrishB yesterday. I wonder why? I‘m not such a SK fan but this sounds interesting. 6y
LiterRohde @BarbaraBB He was writing more than his publisher was willing to put out (one book a year) so he wrote as Richard so he could publish more books. I believe he published 4 books as Bachman he had previously written but not yet published, and then wrote and published Thinner as Bachman, before killing him off (being found out). King then “found” two more books after Bachman‘s death and published them posthumously. (edited) 6y

Doing a read through of King‘s work is a task. He‘s not my favorite author. He has some great books. Annnnd he has some dogs. This is in between. There‘s some great storytelling and there‘s some very lazy plot holes. It‘s that book where you just think, “why would you do it that way” the whole way through. Not feeling more complete having read this.
