#Two4Tuesday
@TheSpineView

1. Three meals that scream autumn to me: A. Chili and cornbread. B. Grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. C. Sloppy joes.
And for dessert for every meal: pumpkin pie! 😂
2. Tagged and in the pic above.

Consider yourself tagged, and join in the fun! 🧡🖤🧡

This is a peculiar book. I think Updike has a way with descriptions for sure & might have been a little in love with his own talent there. I'm honestly unsure what to make of this- feminist? Completely anti-feminist? Is it a sardonic satire?
IMHO This novel merits much more rumination & yet I don't really want to because the story itself was actually just meh. Is the film better? Maybe.
(we've figured out climbing! Dear lord, send help! Haha)

Just started and it saddens me though does NOT surprise me (which is even sadder) that at 5'8“ and 160lbs Alexandra is considered “plump“ with multiple references to this. This bothers me for many reasons one of which is the fact that many don't even have a conception of what that looks like. I'm pretty sure anything about 120 for a woman is considered plump, not considering any other factor. Stupid.

There were parts of this I… nearly enjoyed? The description of the town was nice and some of the magic. But EVERY woman on EVERY page was having her weight and bodily functions described in truly bizarre detail. I‘m not sure if John Updike has a) never met a woman or b) only met women he truly truly despised and sort of believed were just fat messy automata??

I appreciate some of the writing of this, and I‘m glad I finally read it - so for that it garners a barely there so-so rating from me. When Jenny came in past the half way point I finally became more interested in the story. Before then, as I‘d read I‘d just think, ick.

Librariana I've never read the book or watched the movie... but I'm hoping to resolve the latter and not the former 😉😁😊 2y
marleed @Librariana Good luck! I‘ve wanted to read this for a long time and I‘m glad I read it even though I‘m certain it will never be a reread. In some ways it reminds me of the way I felt when reading Lolita. 2y

It's time. Spooky season has officially begun.🎃🎃🎃Break out the pumpkin spice lattes (And turn on the air. Let's be reasonable. I still live in Alabama🥵). Good. Interesting characters and concept but it didn't draw me in as much as I thought it would as it didn't really get going till the third part as it was spilt into 3 volumes. Even though this is full of witchy goings on and you do want to see how it plays out, it does feel dated.

#Penquin

Started the tagged book this morning and found this ticket inside as I bought from a library sale. Love the movie, hated the book

1. I am a reality tv junkie. The trashier, the better. Jersey Shore, Love Is Blind, The Circle, 90 Day Fiance.....just to name some recent ones 😄

2. You have NO idea how grateful I am that tomorrow is Friday 😂😂😂

If you're reading....you're tagged!

45% and I'm really surprised I was able to cringe for this long.

The only thing I even came close to enjoying about this book is that the Witches are actually Witches. Horrible, miserable witches.

This book just makes me feel dirty....and not in a happy way.

I finished this up while in KC this weekend. It‘s the first John Updike I‘ve read. I had seen the wacktastic film adaptation, which is very little like the book. It looks like this book is terribly unpopular but I thought it was a pretty decent little satire on the expectations society piles upon women, particularly in generations past.

This was my first Updike and perhaps it wasn't the best one to start with.

I was bored through this entire book and disliked all the characters.

Anyone an Updike fan? And if so, which book of his would you recommend?

While I need a #RhodeIsland book for #ReadingUSA2019, I just can‘t with this book. It meanders back and forth between long, dragging passages, casual racism, and heavy misogyny. There are better options out there, so no thank you.

#Riotgrams - Book You Never Finished: This is the only book that I never finished for reason of dislike. There have been other books that I got distracted from or I ran out of time or I had too many other things happening at the same time. But I bailed on this book because I didn‘t like it. It‘s been years. Sometimes I think about it. Sometimes I feel bad about it. Sometimes I wonder if I should try again.👇🏽

Nute Then the memory comes rushing in...this was a terrible experience. Reconsideration...I don‘t think so. 6y

Chellebearss I also started this one and put it down. Which really disappointed me as I went to a lot of trouble to find a copy of it ☹️ 6y
Nute @Trashcanman I enjoy reading your comments about Dickens. Okay, so here goes our new budding friendship, I like Dickens and his books. He‘s long winded, but he wrote for serials so that might make sense. I‘m trying to remember your specific dislikes. Anyway this is my absolute choice for a book that I‘ll never try again. I don‘t even think that I own it anymore. Is that good news?🙄 6y
Nute @Reviewsbylola @Chellebearss It was a long time ago for me as well. Every now and then it crosses my mind out of the blue. I don‘t why, because I don‘t ever plan to try again. 6y
