Hearts In Atlantis
Hearts In Atlantis | Stephen King
Stephen King, whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974, the year before the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, is the first hugely popular writer of the TV generation. Images from that war -- and the protests against it -- had flooded America's living rooms for a decade. Hearts in Atlantis, King's newest fiction, is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War. In Part One, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror. In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest...and confront their own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast. In "Blind Willie" and "Why We're in Vietnam," two men who grew up with Bobby in suburban Connecticut try to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era in an America which sometimes seems as hollow -- and as haunted -- as their own lives. And in "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling," this remarkable book's denouement, Bobby returns to his hometown where one final secret, the hope of redemption, and his heart's desire may await him. Full of danger, full of suspense, most of all full of heart, Stephen King's new book will take some readers to a place they have never been...and others to a place they have never been able to completely leave.

Going into this all I knew was it had a Dark Tower connection, so I wasn‘t sure what to expect…

…but it wasn‘t this.

The DT connection isn‘t the main reason to read Hearts. I think people forget how well King does Literature, and he doesn‘t fail to impress here with his wisdom and the way he so deftly captures the idea that memories can both hurt and heal. It masterfully displays King‘s depth and range, and I consider it amongst his best works.

This is such an odd book to review. Taken individually, all five stories are stellar. The problem is the connective tissue, which runs extremely deep, and turns those five stories into an interconnected whole. That whole is disjointed, ranging from a book-length story that delves deeply into The Dark Tower mythos, to the other four, which primarily concern themselves with the Vietnam War. An odd duck, but it has heart; I still give it a 4/5.

1966: Hearts in Atlantis - Wow. Like any student of history, I've spent more than a little time considering what it must have been to be alive and vital in just the right place in a momentous period of time. Nothing I've read has ever managed quite so successfully as Hearts in Atlantis to connect me to the experience of being a collegiate male in the midst of the Vietnam War. Another standout, and another 5/5.

1960: Low Men in Yellow Coats - I can't believe I'd never read this story, which could have been a small book release in its own right. As tragic and fraught with omens of impending doom as this story is, it's lovely to witness the growing friendship of Bobby and Ted as they bond over their mutual love of books. The significant ties to and expansion of the lore of The Dark Tower makes this an absolute must-read for any fan of King's work. 5/5

As a devoted fan of Stephen King, I have been buying all of his books when they are published for a few decades. When I purchased this book, ages ago, I didn‘t think I would like it very much. Instead, I really liked it! Check out my blog at https://abookandadog.com for my review, pics of cool promotional dog tags and SK Funko Pop, and movie trailer.

KathyWheeler I liked it better the second time I read than I did the first. 2y

I really hate giving a King novel anything but a stellar rating. 😕

The first story connects back to the Beam, and it was by far my favorite. I think it set the bar too high for the remaining 4 interconnected stories.

King's look into the Vietnam war and how it changed people was fascinating, but in the end I'm not sure I'll remember much in a few weeks.

This was not a favorite of mine of Kings..I truly wasn‘t sure what I was reading half the time and wasn‘t aware it was 5 stories in one that intertwined. It took me over a month to finish this hefty book. Although the writing is good as always, the story just didn‘t do it for me 😟

tokorowilliamwallace Yay, one of the few Stephen King I've finished and remember liking. 2y
Bec_lectic @tokorowilliamwallace did you ever read 11/22/63? That is my absolute fav King book 😊 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @Bec_lectic I haven't. Currently I'm gunning for both The Tommyknockers (quality nostalgia vibes and characterization) and Cujo (slice-of-life era context! with the ad men sub plot). I'd probably need to find a thrifted copy in a paperback edition. Is there a lot of conspiracy theory rambling and detail-oriented text in it? If so, a greater chance for me to like it. 2y
Bec_lectic @tokorowilliamwallace definitely some detail-oriented text but not much on the conspiracy theory. It‘s a story of potentially rewriting history through time travel. It‘s a hefty novel but I read it in 5 days because it was so good. I have yet to read Tommyknockers or Cujo. They are on my list! 2y

I‘ve always been a huge fan of Stephen Kings writing and non horror books. Don‘t forget he wrote Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. An effort was made to make this into a movie but it barely touched one third of the book. Not even Anthony Hopkins could save it. The book is five linked stories full of stunning writing and page turning suspense. I also loved 22/11/63 and Revival the ending of which he said scared even him 😬

Cathythoughts That‘s quite a recommendation 👍🏻 stacking. 2y

This came highly recommended from a friend… yet I‘m almost 200 pages in and it‘s not holding my interest at all. Being only my second Stephen King novel I‘m giving it a go.

tjwill It‘s been a very long time since I read it (around when it was first published), but I seem to remember that it switches to another storyline and then you can start to see how they connect by the end. Sorry you‘re not enjoying it, but maybe it will start to improve for you when you get to the next part. 3y
PrezBookster @tjwill Thank you! I hope so too! It just seems that in 200 pages I should have gotten more from the story by now. 3y
AmandaBlaze I believe this book was written after King had a near fatal motorcycle accident. It has a different tone than any of his other works. 3y

Another one down in my #expandeddt reading. 🤗

I wasn‘t super stoked about this one (probably just because of my #bookishpeeve ... that I HATE movie tie in covers🤯).... buuuut, I really enjoyed it. Especially the first 2 stories. The Low Men details really provide some context for the Dark Tower series.

I‘m also really enjoying the reading-outside-with-a-blanket weather 😊

Y is for Yellow. Whether it's men in Yellow Coats, a store with Yellow in the name, or an iconic Yellow raincoat on a kid, it's hard to deny that King obviously has a connection with his works and the color yellow. I've always wondered why he chose yellow. Maybe someday I'll ask him if I get the chance.

"Hearts are tough, Most times they don't break. Most times they only bend."

Well my little heart is pretty bent out of shape over this collection. No body writes the innocence of childhood like Uncle Stevie. The language in here is beautiful. The stories are magical. The characters, dare I say, are full of hearts. I didn't want this book to end. Good thing there's a movie to tie me over. I have a feeling I'm gonna re-read this at some point. ?

KathyWheeler Have you read the Dark Tower series? 7y
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Read The Waste Land right before this one. Will I find out more about "The Breakers" in the 4th book? 7y

EricQiao @KathyWheeler Good to know! I'm so glad all the books in the series are published. No waiting for the compulsive. I shall read on! 7y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao I remember when King was hit by that van and very seriously injured; when I first heard the news, my first awful thought was, "Oh no! The Dark Tower isn't finished!" Listened to the entire series recently-- it was nice to not to have to wait for the next book. 7y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao I know! Neil Gaiman saying "George R R Martin is not your bitch" is all well and good, but what if something happens to him before he finishes the story?! 7y
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Ha-ha! In an interview with Stephen King, Martin said the creepiest thing a reader sent him was a paperback of Misery. I reckon that reader was responding to Gaiman. Like saying, "Yeah, tell that to Annie Wilkes." ? (edited) 7y

A tough prompt today, but I'm going for the title story in this collection. I failed an accounting test because of this book. I wasn't going to do well anyway, but I read this for hours instead of studying.
