Bastard Out of Carolina
Bastard Out of Carolina: A Novel | Dorothy Allison
69 posts | 149 read | 98 to read
The modern literary classic that has been compared to To Kill a Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye. "As close to flawless as any reader could ask for." -The New York Times Book Review The publication of Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina was a landmark event. The novel's profound portrait of family dynamics in the rural South won the author a National Book Award nomination and launched her into the literary spotlight. Critics have likened Allison to William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Harper Lee, naming her the first writer of her generation to dramatize the lives and language of poor whites in the South. Since its appearance, the novel has inspired an award-winning film and has been banned from libraries and classrooms, championed by fans, and defended by critics. Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family-a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective. When her stepfather Daddy Glen, "cold as death, mean as a snake," becomes increasingly more vicious toward her, Bone finds herself caught in a family triangle that tests the loyalty of her mother, Anney-and leads to a final, harrowing encounter from which there can be no turning back. Now available in a twentieth anniversary keepsake edition with a new afterword by the author.

Dorothy Allison died today. As if this week hasn‘t already been enough. Former Carolina girl, rambunctious out and proud lesbian, powerhouse writer. I was fortunate enough to meet her and hear her lecture twice. She was an inspiration to many. She will truly be missed.

ImperfectCJ I had not heard about her death. Her writing was so influential for me in college and my 20s. 1mo
plemmdog @ImperfectCJ me too. I grew up in a lower middle-class family in South Carolina and to see her mention local landmarks and to give voice for so many meant so much to me and countless others. A true pioneer 1mo

Well this was devastating. An excruciatingly heartbreaking look at child abuse, told from the child‘s point of view. Very graphic.

It‘s also a tale of poverty in rural South Carolina in the 50‘s-60‘s. Unfortunately I don‘t think much has changed since then for those born into this kind of situation. Opportunity to get out of this sort of life is not easy to come by.

Soubhiville Update on our situation: a huge portion of Austin and really a lot of Texas is without power and some without water. We lost power and water at our house on Monday evening. On Tuesday afternoon we moved ourselves and the cats and dog to a friend‘s guest room where they currently still have water and power. The local authorities have warned with more incoming storms more power outages are almost guaranteed. TX can‘t deal with this kind of winter... 4y
Soubhiville But we are currently safe and warm, fingers crossed for the next couple days. I hope others in this mess are fairing ok. @Eggs are you alright? @Sg1224 @alysonwrites @jpmcwisemorgan @Julsmarshall ? 4y
MatchlessMarie @Soubhiville I‘m in San Antonio and I feel you. It‘s so ridiculous and frustrating. I don‘t have a car at the moment and buses aren‘t running either so I‘ve had to walk in the snow just to try to find groceries but hoarders are emptying all the stores. Stay warm! We will get through this somehow. 4y

Leftcoastzen The situation is horrible in Texas . Hoping things improve soon.No way to be prepared for such an extreme winter event.Stay safe. 4y
Scochrane26 Stay safe, Texans! We are supposed to be getting 5 or so more inches of snow today in Ky, so I‘ll still be home. At least we are slightly more prepared, but we haven‘t had this much in several years. 4y
MyNamesParadise I hope everyone is staying safe and I wish you well! I think I remember seeing a Lifetime movie based on this book. 4y
Librariana @Soubhiville, you were the first Litten I thought of in the Texas area (I don't use Litsy as frequently as others so am sadly not as familiar with the locations and all) and wanted to come check in. Thank you for sharing an update as to your situation. Hoping y'all are continuing to stay warm and coping with this weather! 💜 4y
Librariana The majority of our family (mine and hubby's) are in El Paso and central Texas where they've been experiencing the blackouts, lack of heat. We're up here in Washington state and know we've grown accustomed to this type of weather... to road conditions, etc. Which is why we worry about our loved ones 😔 I know for y'all this is completely different and was glad to read you and yours are safe at a friend's house. Keep us posted, please 💕 4y
Julsmarshall We are safe and have had power through much of this but we seem to be the exception rather than the rule. Worried about friends and family and we just need this storm to pass already. Sending prayers to everyone else experiencing this storm. 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve never much minded being without power as long as I had a way to stay warm, though admittedly I‘ve never had to deal with it for long. But without water?!? That‘s so bad. People can get into trouble so quickly in that circumstance. My heart goes out to the people there dealing with that. I‘m glad you have a safe situation to be in and I hope it remains that way. 🤞🏼 4y
dariazeoli Glad you have a safe place to stay right now. Thinking of you and all the other Texan Littens! 4y
Bookzombie I‘m glad to hear you are all safe. We have been fortunate to not lose power or water so far. I did try to brave the store today to pick up a couple of things and the store I found open was picked over. Stay warm. I hope this next round is not so bad. 4y
Eggs @Soubhiville Had no power/internet so went to stay w my daughter and fam in Georgetown 4y
Soubhiville @Eggs I‘m so glad you had someplace to go. We stayed in Round Rock with a friend. Are you back home now? We got home last night. 4y

This very rarely happens in Texas! I‘m just North of Austin and we have 4-6 inches, depending on where you measure since it‘s fluffy drifting snow. And it‘s cold enough it didn‘t melt today at all. Even our grocery stores have closed!

I spent the day wrapped in blankets with this book. So well written but so sad! There‘s no way I‘m driving tomorrow, so I‘ll probably finish by then.

Tamra Enjoy! 4y
Soubhiville Also, can you see how mad Sietje is? She hates getting her dainty white paws cold and wet. Plus it‘s deep enough she has to squat into it. Poor pupster. 4y

A friend recommended this classic to me a while ago. Excellent, upsetting and important are three words I‘d use to describe it. Semi-autobiographical fiction that felt very real, authentic and honest. Powerful and traumatic. Thank you Dorothy Allison 🙏.

#3books #thatmadememad

It‘s ironic that I really liked all these books but in certain ways they all made me mad!

The ending of Lovely Bones ruined the whole book for me and made me roll my eyes.

Crazy in Alabama had a few characters that I wanted to throttle and the social injustice of course is rage inducing.

Don‘t want to say too much about Bastard Out of Carolina because it‘s a spoiler but if you‘ve read it, you know what I mean.

Extreme content warning for anyone wanting to read this book! Without spoilers there‘s multiple Sexual assaults, read with caution. This book follows a girl growing up in South Carolina, it deals with class issues, abuse and other societal issues she faces. Bones mother was 15 when she was born, this sets the stage for how the towns folk treat her. The book goes through her life from birth to about 13 I think.

Yes, it‘s traumatic and distressing in places with depictions of abuse (physical and sexual). However, this is a must-read, given that it is a semi-autobiographical novel as well as a #bannedbook- we owe it to the author to allow her message to be heard.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever been so devastated by a book as I was at the end of this one. I‘m still thinking about it weeks later. I can‘t stop telling people about it either-it was so good and yet I hesitate to recommend it. It‘s about the titular bastard, a young girl named Bone who is growing up amid a rough but mostly loving extended family, tormented by an abusive stepfather. An extremely tough read but a very very good book.

Honest and raw portrayal of Appalachia through the eyes of a young woman. There are certainly difficult moments to read through as this book focuses on childhood abuse and her longing for escape, but Allison doesn‘t hold back from the beautiful or hideous moments, telling the tale of an often forgotten and misunderstood culture, full of impossibly strong people and their compelling narratives. #queerauthors

I just answered a question on Jeopardy about The Jungle and classified it among my top three most disturbing reads. And of course that got me wondering...what are other Littens most disturbing reads? #disturbingreads #LitsyAfterDark

Erinreadsthebooks I read The Jungle in high school and Bastard in college. Definitely not feel good reads 😨 6y
Kaye I must like disturbing reads because #1 and 3 are some of my favorites. 😱 6y
See All 14 Comments
Leftcoastzen I‘m with @kaye disturbing but among my favorites! All three! The Jungle radicalized me at a young age. 6y
cathysaid @Owlizabeth So would you suggest reading it or is it stuff nightmares are made of? Clearly I‘m drawn to disturbing. 🧐 6y
cathysaid @Erinreadsthebooks That was the same timing for me as well! I often wonder if that timing affected the impact. 6y
cathysaid @kaye @Leftcoastzen I can‘t say any are “favorites” but I also don‘t regret reading them. If they affected me so profoundly, then I feel the authors were successful. I think part of my issues are with my respective ages when I read them, but also I think I simultaneously identified in some way while also being repulsed. I just know there are scenes and descriptions in all three which I‘ll never forget. 😞 6y
Leftcoastzen I agree 6y
Reagan Bastard Out of Carolina 😢 I gave it away after I read it and then I was so mad because it‘s a book I need to own. I‘ve never read The Jungle 😬 (edited) 6y
cathysaid @Reagan-reads I suggest The Jungle if you are starting a fasting diet or would like to lose twenty pounds within three days. It‘s my understanding that the formation of the USDA was heavily influenced by the novel. 6y
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read any of them and now they sound appealing. What does that say about me 😳😉? I definitely think the age you read them is important. My most disturbing read I read in high school too. It is 6y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB Ok that description sounds like it could seriously mess with the adolescent mind! And while I found the ones I mention disturbing, I still think they are worth the read. Just know I preface that suggestion with a myriad of trigger warnings = animal cruelty, graphic violence, molestation, rape, sexual assault...and those aren‘t all. 6y
BarbaraBB The Jungle is on the list of #1001books so I‘ll get to that one sooner or later. Bastard has been on my mind for a while too! 6y

If you have trigger warnings, stay away from this book.

It's such a heartbreaking, challenging, but necessary story. It's one of those that you're glad it's told because it gives visibility to people who have experienced childhood rape and abuse, but you're sad that anyone should have to go through that. You're sad that story HAS to be told. It'll break your heart and shatter your soul, but it's such necessary read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Ruth Anne "Bone" Boatwright has a tough life and rowdy kin who fight hard but love harder. Mama has a string of heartbreaks that break her down so when Glenn comes along, it seems a gift. Bone and her sister are told to call Glenn "daddy" but young Bone knows what he says and does are things daddies don't do.

This is not an easy book to read. At all. It wasn't as violent or graphic as I had expected based on some descriptions, which was nice, but those scenes were incredibly difficult to get through especially once you remember how old Bone actually is (I kept thinking she was WAY older). There's some nonsense and parts I skimmed a bit but overall, it's a powerful story about choices, abuse, poverty, desperation, family, love, survival, and humanity.

LindsayReads Oh man. Agreed. Except I might suffer from the reverse situation--I just remember the last third! 😭😭😭 8y

This is actually dessert and not my entire meal I swear. It is just a lot prettier than the uninspired salad I threw together tonight. This book is one of my all time favorites so here is #mealandbookilove #17booklove

These are the books I'm committed to for February. I also hope to for in some recommendations from @Josie but these three are a lock.

Josie I got you, boo! ❤ 8y
