KAO I‘d never heard of this book or the author, so it‘s all brand new to me! I looked it up online to find the original publication date to be 1929. (My paperback copy didn‘t have that info.) Meanwhile, the repetition of “Glad it‘s not mine” makes me smile. More to come on that, for sure! 1w

Crinoline_Laphroaig I had to finish before Thanksgiving, I didn't want to be reading with family here. My reaction was WTF? That's it? 1w

lauraisntwilder While the ending is unexpected, Steinbeck was setting us up for something like that the whole time. It's another example of how the poor are only able to rely on other poor people, to the point of sacrificing their own comfort or propriety. There are no strangers anymore and everyone is family. I think Rose of Sharon is glad for something good to come from her heartbreak. Just my take. What a book!!! 1w

Bookwormjillk I had remembered the ending but not the scene with Uncle John and the baby. That hit me hard this read. Also reading this made want to try to do better about my bitterness towards my husband‘s cousin living in my basement 😂 Thanks as always @BarkingMadRead looking forward to starting something short tomorrow. 1w
