rubyslippersreads Charley Grapewin, who played Grandpa, was also Uncle Henry in The Wizard of Oz. 5h
BarkingMadRead @rubyslippersreads that‘s so cool! 5h

Bklover Noah is such a sad character. And poor Uncle John, living with all that guilt. At least we have Grampa to lighten things up! 4h
willaful @Bklover yeah, kind of fascinated by trying to diagnose him. What a strange story. 3h
willaful Anyone notice how much they call things “her“? We still do it a bit in English but not nearly so often. 33m

ElizaMarie I hate this! How true it is to swindle and cheat people. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig So what do we call these chapters that don't follow Tom Jobe but give overview of the world of the story? 1d
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig that‘s a good question! We definitely need a hashtag for it! 1d
willaful @TheAromaofBooks LOL!

Spider Robinson has a story about people doing good in the world and the form they choose is to sell actually good used cars!
1d
dabbe @Crinoline_Laphroaig @BarkingMadRead Here's a few hashtag suggestions for the parts that don't contain the Joads but contain history:
#wrathsnack #grapeless #joadfree #dustbreak #dustdetour
1d
BarkingMadRead @dabbe omg I love these! Especially #wrathsnack 🤣 1d
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Snack as in “gotta have more knowledge!“ 🤣 23h
lil1inblue @TheAromaofBooks I was laughing a bit, myself. 😅 20h

Crinoline_Laphroaig I was so glad the Turtle was safe! And then the poor rabbit. That was enough. I stopped reading and will start with tomorrow's chapter. 2d
ElizaMarie @lil1inblue me too!!!! I think I‘d be super bummed if I pushed through this one 2d
Bklover 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢👍 2d
lauraisntwilder Don't know what I did to deserve reading about that pig in this chapter and a scene with leeches in it in a different book on the same day. 😳 2d
Bklover 🐇🔥🍽️👎 2d
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder are you reading both of those books with me? 😳 2d
lauraisntwilder @BarkingMadRead No! Definitely wasn't blaming you in any way. I'm reading The Ladies of Missalonghi. Did you read about leeches yesterday, too? My sympathies! 1d
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder I‘m reading the Body, they made the movie Stand By Me based on the book, and there‘s a scene with leeches 1d

KAO This chapter makes me so sad. Such helplessness in the face of devastating loss. 3d
willaful This kind of infuriated me because it made me so aware of history rhyming. These books are full of accumulated wisdom and yet we keep doing the same things over and over. Reading it at this very moment in history really drives it home. 3d
See All 20 Comments
SamAnne @willaful exactly. We continue to relive it. One of my clearest memories of high school is our amazing English teacher have us read this. Context: redneck timber town highschool mid-80s. All of us were “whew glad that doesn‘t happen anymore.” And then she showed us a documentary on the plight of orchard workers in CA in relatively current times. Have never forgotten. (edited) 3d
willaful @SamAnne I'm glad you had such a good teacher. 3d
BarbaraJean @willaful My thoughts exactly. All the bank stuff. All the faceless non-human/inhuman entities. All the shifting of blame. 😡 (edited) 3d
dabbe @willaful @SamAnne Same here! 🧡🍁💛 3d
lil1inblue @willaful 🎯🎯🎯 3d
lil1inblue @SamAnne What a powerful lesson. And what an amazing teacher. 💓 3d
SamAnne @willaful @dabbe @lil1inblue Raise a glass to Eleanor Dinkins. She terrified me at first. Then I loved her. And what a treat to get to know her when I was an adult. Even in my conservative red neck timber town, what freedom our teachers had to teach us! The 80s. Now I raise a glass to all the teachers out there doing the difficult work under difficult circumstances. I always thought it would get better, not worse. 3d
dabbe @SamAnne I always took it as a compliment when I student would tell me that I terrified them ... at first. And I always waited for the magic word “But“ ... music to my ears! Here's to you, Eleanor Dinkins! 🍸 3d
ElizaMarie This chapter gutted me. @davbe - I am sure you are one of those teachers people still talk about :) @SamAnne you are right back when we were in school I felt teachers were able to be so much more truthful now- it‘s walking on egg shells 2d
lil1inblue @SamAnne Here's to Eleanor Dinkins! 💓🍸💓 My Ms. Dinkins was Mr. Joe Locascio. Teachers are so amazing. 2d
lil1inblue @dabbe I think I would have loved having you as a teacher. I can see hints of it in the buddy reads you host. 💓💓💓 2d
dabbe @ElizaMarie In both positive and negative ways! I didn't anoint myself as #crabbyabbe for nothing! 🤣🤣🤣 2d
dabbe @lil1inblue You are too kind. I can sometimes come across as too teachery! 🤣😍🤣 2d

ElizaMarie GEEZE that former preacher! Ha! I loved his rationalization of his sex life :) We aren't too far in, and again, I am going in blind, so I have no clue whats going on, but its odd. I am looking forward to keep reading and exploring where the story takes us! 4d
BarkingMadRead @elizamarie I‘ve started it but not finished it, so I‘ll be curious in a little while 🤣 the writing is beautiful but it‘s such a sad story so far! 4d

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm glad nothing happened to the turtle. Anymore turtle meaness and I'm out. 4d
Bookwormjillk This was the only assigned reading in High School I actually finished. I‘ve read it a few times since. But since I have a Swiss cheese brain when it comes to what I‘ve read I don‘t remember the details. 4d
Cuilin Ok I was this 🤏 close to DNFing but something happened when he started talking about being in prison that made me interested. Especially the guy who returned because life was better in prison then out. Sticking with it for now. 4d
willaful I was fascinated by this chapter. I think the Preacher's take has a lot to be said fo it.

But I'm so worried about the poor turtle! Even if he's meant for a pet, I fear he wil wind up food.
4d
dabbe Jim Casey. Initials JC. Just like ... 🧐 4d
SamAnne @dabbe could catch. Yes. I enjoyed this chapter. Oh that poor turtle! 4d
lil1inblue @willaful I, too, was intrigued by the preacher's viewpoint. Especially when combined with the JC initial observation that @dabbe pointed out! 4d
lil1inblue I'm way too invested in the turtle. 4d
Bklover @Crinoline_Laphroaig @lil1inblue I agree! This turtle business is making me crazy. 4d

Cuilin I‘ll admit it, I‘m glad this was a short chapter cause I‘m not yet connecting with this book. 5d
lil1inblue #youarenottheonlyonestressingoveraturtle I gasped audibly when he got hit. 5d
BarbaraJean I was SO invested in the turtle. Relief when the first car missed him. Shocked when the truck swerved to intentionally hit him! Relief again when he made it across. I‘m going to need future turtle updates, Steinbeck. 5d
SamAnne I‘m looking forward to this reread. I‘ve also been doing a slow read of East of Eden. I‘m on a 6 week road trip and have traveled through southern Central Valley, the orange groves, Visalia, where Steinbeck traveled and spent in before writing GOW. 5d
SamAnne And I loved a chapter devoted to the trials and tribulations of a turtle. Perseverance! 5d
lauraisntwilder I tried to read this once WAY before I was ready and didn't finish. It's been so long that I'd just about convinced myself that I made up the turtle chapter! I've since read and enjoyed East of Eden, so I should give this one another try 5d
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder would you like me to add you to the tag list? We are reading a chapter a day, and the first few were very short! It would be easy to catch up 5d
willaful So shocked! People, ugh. 5d
willaful I guess it makes a great metaphor though. 5d
Bklover Poor turtle. 🐢 but he‘s hanging on! 5d

TheAromaofBooks When I read this several years ago, I remember enjoying the not-story chapters even more than the story chapters. I think Steinbeck's writing is so beautiful. 1w
dabbe Oh, this novel. My heart weeps not just at the story of the Joads but at Steinbeck's sublime writing. 🩶🖤🩶 1w
BookNAround I love that so many people like this book so much. It 100% is not for me (I loathe it). In fact, no Steinbeck book I‘ve ever read has been for me (I do still have high hopes for Travels with Charley though). 😂 1w

Ok #hashtagbrigade here is our 2026 schedule! A chapter a day for all but the Count of Monte Cristo. Since the chapters are shorter, we will do 3 a day. Anna Karenina is our very first #hashtagbrigadesidequest and we will start her on February 1, a chapter a day, alongside whatever other books we are reading at the time. I‘ll post again in December to see who wants to read Shirley!

Quick question for the #hashtagbrigade
The votes are still coming in, but the top 2 right now are both chunksters. How do we feel about that? The tagged book will take almost 4 months to read a chapter a day, and Anna Karenina has 239 chapters! Would everyone be willing to do Anna Karenina alongside whatever other books we are reading? Maybe start it in February as its on buddy read? Thoughts? Ideas?

See All 31 Comments
SamAnne I‘d be fine with that! Both are on my TBR for 2026 so I will be reading both anyway. 1w
JacqMac That works for me. I always read them alongside my other books anyway. 1w
Ruthiella I think a bonus read along would work….otherwise we end up reading only two books in one year as a group! 😜 But that said, I‘ve already read AK and probably won‘t participate either way. 1w
mcctrish I‘ve already read Anna and I am committed to the Count 1w
rubyslippersreads I‘ve always wanted to read Anna, so any way we do that is fine with me. 1w
BarbaraJean Alongside other books sounds great—but also I‘ve read both so I‘m not sure if I‘ll join for either! Although a re-read of Anna is tempting… 1w
Cuilin I‘ve read both, probably will skip those. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I've read Anna. It's on my classic that I never have to read again. But I'm in for the Count. 1w
Seabreeze_Reader Along side other reads might work better? I might be in for The Count. (Edited: I just bought an audio version 🙂👍) (edited) 1w
Bookwormjillk I'm up for it if you are. You do all the work. I'm just along for the ride. 1w
Bklover I‘ve read both, but would love to reread either alongside the regular monthly book. 1w
Bklover @Ruthiella 😂😂🩷 1w
Deblovestoread I love the side quest idea. Def in for count and might give AK a reread 1w
BarkingMadRead @deblovestoread ohhhhhh we may have to make this a new tradition! 1w
willaful I've read both so may sit it out, not sure yet. 1w
dabbe I'm not sure how long the chapters are in these chunksters, but if they're short, we could read more than one chapter a day as well. I'd be happy to help plan that out (similar in a way to how we read BRIDESHEAD REVISITED). I've read AK and will probably sit that one out, but count me in for the count! 😍 1w
quietjenn I also support the idea of side quests, although as has been noted you are doing the bulk of the work so I trust you! Will likely skip Anna ... 1w
julieclair I read Anna this year so will skip that, but I‘d like to read the Count. 1w
kwmg40 I'd like to do a reread of Anna, but I'll probably skip Count, as I'd read it quite recently. 1w
Librarybelle I think whatever works best for you! I‘ve also recently read Anna so probably would not join that discussion, but I do want to read Cristo. 1w
CoverToCoverGirl I‘ve tried Anna several times, not for me, but would by for the Count. 1w
DieAReader I think I‘d skip the Count this time around but am game for Anna whenever works best😏 1w
eeclayton I've read them both and will most probably skip them this time. 1w
jenniferw88 @dabbe some Count chapters are longer than others, if I remember correctly. @BarkingMadRead count me in for the main ones (possibly), but I'll sit Count & Anna out, as I've read them before. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t mind taking a long time to read books (as long as they‘re out of copyright and I can get a free download. I‘m unlikely to want to read two #hashtagbrigade books at a time. 1w
lil1inblue I love the side quest idea! I'm not 100% sure yet on either - it will kind of depend on some other challenges. 1w
Tineke I want to read Anna Karenina, and want to read along. I'll follow along as long as I can do both books ( if there's a book next to it). Otherwise I'll drop one. 1w

ElizaMarie Do y'all think the creature would have spared Elizabeth if he didn't marry her? Victor is so selfish. I think he knew that the creature will kill her, and didn't do enough to protect her. Like maybe getting out of her life, it's not like he seemed super excited about getting married anyway. 2w
Bookwormjillk And yesterday I was so sure everything would be ok 😣 2w
dabbe You destroy the only thing the creature will love; then YOU get married and think you'll be all happy? THEN you let her go off to bed on her own? This is where one has to suspend their disbelief just a tad. 2w

Ok #hashtagbrigade here is November‘s book! If you want to join us for a chapter a day, drop a comment below. But remember, my hashtags are often ridiculous and always chapter spoilers, so read the chapter before you read my post each day! Everyone is welcome! I have two groups of tags, one for the individual book, and one for monthly reminder list, so be sure to let me know if you need to be on one of my lists!

SamAnne @BarkingMadRead I‘ve read a lot of Steinbeck but weirdly not East of Eden! Loving it. 2w

dabbe @BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk Those are the dark Romantics for you ... all the angst. Angst everywhere. Run and hide in bed. 🛌 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Frankie basically confessed when he saw Henry! He‘s lucky the judge didn‘t take it as such and was willing to dig. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig What's with this guy always falling into a fever when something bad happens? Is this the male equivalent of a Regency heroine catching a cold and almost dying every time she gets caught in a bit of rain? 2w
Sparklemn @Crinoline_Laphroaig Honestly, it feels like half the book has been Frankie moping around in bed. 2w
ElizaMarie Victor's fever = man cold. Like wow buddy.... He is TOO much with the drama. CLEAN up your mess!!! It's like, he should be hunting the creature down rather than hiding and letting the creature kill everything/one he loves. 2w

peanutnine Frankie needs some impulse control. He really should have come up with a plan before revealing to the creature that he wasn't going through with the new creation, instead of letting him go off and wreak havoc (again) 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Oh, now he decides that he‘s not going back on his word? 🙄 I think the description of him dropping the bag of body parts into the ocean was the creepiest part of this book so far. 3w

ElizaMarie I‘m kinda glad he is paranoid. He really needs to think things through before he does them 3w
dabbe Gee, what could he be paranoid about? A creature on the loose? A wife he has to make so the creature won't kill anyone else? No one to tell this to? Though one may forget that this entire story is being narrated by Walton as Victor is telling him his story. Why won't he tell Henry? I think Henry might understand. Might. 3w

Clare-Dragonfly “Make another one of the people who horrified and disgusted you” doesn‘t sound like the greatest plan, but I guess the creature didn‘t think of “treat me like a human being and introduce me to other people as one so they‘ll get used to me,” and anyway I don‘t think Victor would go for that after the creature killed William. 3w

KAO @TheAromaofBooks I take it back! The description of mysterious, misty paths in the mountains of Switzerland in this chapter seems ideal for the setting here! (My limited experiences in the Swiss Alps have mostly been glorious summer days where it was hard to let dark thoughts take up any space in one‘s mind in the face of such grandeur!) (edited) 1mo
KAO I confess that I‘m flabbergasted that the creature has such fantastic thought processes and linguistic abilities!! All from the transplanted brain? Can‘t wait to learn more! 1mo
See All 12 Comments
Bookwormjillk @KAO that‘s what I thought too! I didn‘t expect such an eloquent creature! 1mo
dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 1mo
Sparklemn @dabbe Can‘t wait to hear the creature‘s sad tale. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - I guess any setting can be good for a bit of a horror story if it's stormy enough 😂 4w
dabbe @Sparklemn IKR? It's a doozy. 🖤 4w
