Under the Whispering Door
Under the Whispering Door | Tj Klune
Under the Whispering Door is a contemporary fantasy with TJ Klune's signature quirk and charm (PW) about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the ferryman he falls in love with When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead. Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village. On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo. Hugo is the tea shop's owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over. But Wallace isnt ready to abandon the life he barely lived. With Hugos help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed in life. When the Manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days. By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune's signature warmth, humor, and extraordinary empathy. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Finished this past the deadline due to not feeling so hot but I don‘t regret pushing through. This had a slow start and elements did feel repetitive and predictable but overall, this was a heartwarming read. It was clear the author was in a place where he needed to get this down for their own personal reasons. #AuthorAMonth

Meh. Although it‘s not tagged as such, this read like a YA romance. And since I dislike both YA and romance, it was a tough slog. I liked the beginning but then it bogged down and felt very drawn-out and stuffed with platitudes that were trite and cliched. But at least I finally completed a book for this year‘s #AuthorAMonth. So that‘s something.

willaful I like both YA and romance and I bailed on this. 😂 2mo

I found out some truly distressing/heartbreaking news this week (I'm fine, my family's fine), so I binge read this book to soothe my heart. I have been extremely fortunate in my life to not have experienced much deep loss in my life, but this book healed my bruised heart in ways it's hard to explain. I can't overstate how much the descriptions of death made me feel better. Highly recommended.

Something about their books that just works so well in audio format! Moving on to “The lightning struck heart” now…. Let‘s see if this next one also makes me ugly cry in parking lots 😂

Death positive and LGBTQ+ centered novel with exponential main character growth. Wallace finds himself at his own funeral only to be brought to a tea shop in the middle of nowhere to come to terms with dying and find his purpose in death. Book was a little slow moving in parts but definitely gives the warm and fuzzies now that we‘re going into fall.

Truly phenomenal and my favorite book of the year by far! It makes you think a little more deeply about life and death, and the characters are so well developed. Another heartstring-pulling, found family tale from TJ Klune. While I didn‘t love it with the intense ferocity with which I loved House in the Cerulean Sea, I still enjoyed the slightly irreverent tone & the quirky, charming cast of characters which made it feel familiar. Death & grief & the great, unknowable beyond are complicated topics to broach. That this book hits upon them with such undeniable warmth is enough to make it a pick for me.

I sobbed for the last 40 minutes of reading this book. I can‘t say enough about it. It‘s a journey of grief, of new beginnings, of discovering the meaning of living, written in a beautiful way, that is also funny and so very heartwarming. The Barnes & Noble special edition, with painted ends, is beautiful to boot. I have a book hangover now. ❤️💔

This is the second TJ Klune book I‘ve read, and he‘s become a must read author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ❤️📚

Wow. I stayed up late finishing this tonight because I just could not stop. And did I ever cry! I haven't cried this much over a book in a while.

To be entirely honest, there was one slower part in the book that got almost too philosophical for me, but it passed, and the story really, really pulled through in the end! Just beautiful!

This does a good job showing the beauty of living a fulfilling life. And while there aren‘t many jokes woven into the tale, Apollo the ghost dog is sure to make a few readers laugh. This is for those who are looking for a lighter read about life after death, and quirky characters who try to do their best to help people cross over.

Went to see TJ Klune at the Manchester Library. It was such a great evening! He had so much to talk to us about, and was an absolute sweetheart 💕

Bought a couple of books from the Queer Lit stall (they were the hosts), but these were the ones I got signed 😊🌈

Now I'm even more excited to dive into his other books!

Lizpixie So jealous! We don‘t get many authors touring in Australia, we‘re too far away for most to bother. Those that do only do major cities & us outer suburbs are left out. Only one I‘ve seen(that‘s not aussie themselves)is Karin Slaughter who came to Picton Library a few years ago, still don‘t know how they got her there🤷🏻‍♀️I have a few signed T.J.Klune books from Waterstones but none personally signed, lucky you. 1y

Oh my, how sweet of an embrace this honest book has been for a second time. I felt a pull towards one of the fictional homes that won my heart not so long ago & concurred to the whim immediately. My soul needed the safety & relief of the poignant storytelling within. It was cleansing & sweet. I laughed. I cried. I found pieces of myself scattered & constructed into impossibly tangible sentences. Beautiful in every way. I am now an honoured guest.

I loved Klune's first book, and enjoyed this one less. The character development of the main character felt rushed. But, that aside, I still had a good time reading! All the supporting characters were lovely, the world was fun, and it had moments of catharsis. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, emotional read (strong themes of grief/death) with a soft landing.

TheBookKeepers I enjoyed this one too, but agree it isn‘t my favorite of his. But I‘ll try anything he writes bc his characters are so adorable 🥰 1y

I have to say this book paints a pretty picture of death. A better life after death, the door that doesn't discriminate anyone, a second chance at being a better being.

A lot of reflective speeches between character, although I have to say that there's quite inactivity between chapters it certainly pays off in the end.

An emotional roller coaster. A pick for me. 3.9 ⭐

I absolutely adored “The House in the Cerulean Sea”, so I had high hopes for Klune‘s “Under the Whispering Door”. This was definitely a heavier read in terms of content matter, however Klune did a beautiful job with his writing and exploring the concept of death. Overall, I loved the characters, story, and the witty humor was spot on.

I'm not crying. You're crying.

This book has a different take on purgatory than I've seen. Very grounded. If you take away the trappings of the world, can you be a better person? Can you grow? Imagine if scrooge died and the ghosts only visited him afterwards. It's kind of like that, with lovable characters all around. In a way, it's also a lot like the house in the cerulean sea, only it's more emotional. At least it was for me.
