Murmuration | Tj Klune
post image
Pickpick

A concept reminiscent of existential therapy; death, meaning, isolation, and freedom, with prose that dives between the dissonance of reality and unreality and that heady sense that the past is the future, Klune explores the philosophical/scientific debate of nature vs. nurture with an evocative twist, thus inbuing the story in subtext; memory, introspection, testimony, and reason while balancing the social benefits of knowledge vs. autonomy.

Giovanni‘s Room by James Baldwin!

I've been pining for this book to be adapted into a movie ever since I first read it. The knowledge of a secret screenplay squirrelled away somewhere in a London flat penned by Baldwin himself only made the notion more desirous.

Forever holding out hope!

eskoch28 I LOVED this book! 4d

Crisped + Sere | T. J. Klune

Pickpick

A tale of human endurance, madness, fervent self-observation and redemption, with a Whitman-congruent dichotomy plucking at the prose, comes an MLM romance set against a post-apocalyptic backdrop, switching between present tense and hallucinatory insanity that the past is the future with a kind of staccato, frantic ease, blurring the edges between reality and unreality. Mind-bendingly cinematic, and without doubt, Klune's greatest work to date.

eskoch28 Phew what a cover! 4d

Gay dystopian fiction. Frantic, almost delirious prose. Characters that are all insane. A man who only goes by the name of Cavalo. A mute cannibal. A loyal dog. A robot succumbing to insanity. The bees inside Cavalo's head invent voices for his canine companion and the aphonic cannibal. Ghosts haunt his mind. What's real? The scrape of a knife and a kiss. Despite every attempt he makes, Cavalo can not ignore his feelings for the cannibal for long.

Dead Happy | Josh Silver

Silver truly upped the ante in this thrilling, evocative sequel to HappyHead. I consumed it in a mere three days. The stakes are higher than ever as a group of teenagers seek those coveted nonpareils: happiness, affirmation, resilience, though a series of increasingly dangerous, morality diminishing tasks, teaching obedience and epicaricacy to the most desperate to please. Blind faith in a twisted system leads into even murkier waters. Incredible.

Misery | Stephen King
post image
Pickpick

My first foray into the genius that is Stephen King, and he had me gasping, grimacing, recoiling; a whole phantom locomotive of emotions. The palpable pity for Paul Sheldon was consuming. The descriptive writing was stomach-churning and oh-so good. Palahnuick's use of the word "rubbernecking" springs the mind; the inability to look away from a road traffic accident, though in this case, one can't look away from the page despite its grisliness.

MrT This was also my first SK in 1988 And my ultimate favourite from him. I've read it every few years since then and have 5 different copies which include the 2 first edition hardcovers from UK & US 2w
emmasm08 @TheIntrovertedDodoBird he is a genius ! 2w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @MrT Wow! Dare I say, you're his Number One Fan? It's honestly going to be hard for any of his other books to beat this one! I'm thinking of The Shining or Under the Dome next. Would you recommend either of those? Those first editions must be your version of the holy grail! 2w

TheIntrovertedDodoBird @MrT Absolutely amazing! Thank you for the recommendations. I'm going to slowly work my way through all of his books. I'll read IT with major trepidation. I'm terrified of that clown! 2w
KathyWheeler Misery is great, but weirdly I‘ve only read it once. The Shining is a classic. I also loved its sequel, Doctor Sleep. Under the Dome is good, but I had some issues with it. 2w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @KathyWheeler It's definitely one to re-read (probably repeatedly... it's so good!). I'm watching the TV adaption of Under the Dome, and I'm curious, especially since the novel might tie up loose ends and delve deeper into the story, maybe? I only realised today that The Shining even had a sequel. I'll definitely be reading those two soon! Anxious but determined to get through a Stephen King classic (I'm usually a baby when it comes to horror!) 2w
KathyWheeler @TheIntrovertedDodoBird I started the tv adaptation of Under the Dome and was enjoying it, but, for some reason, I didn‘t finish it. I‘m also going to recommend 11/22/63 — it‘s amazing and HULU did a good job with the miniseries. 2w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @KathyWheeler It's very good. This is my third time watching it now. Oh, I had absolutely no idea 11/22/63 has been adapted for TV. I've never read the book, but I love the premise. I plan to read and watch both now. 2w

My infinity star read. This book is the equivalent of a comfy pair of pyjamas, something I slip back into whenever I'm ill or anxious or possibly both. What's not love about an asexual stoner hipster and an idiosyncratic curmudgeon living platonically ever after together? It has all the feels, laugh out loud moments, and harbours the only miscommunication trope that I've ever enjoyed. I've basically read (and reread) all of Klune's books now!

TieDyeDude Nice! Thanks for the recommendation. It's so cool that you found your identity through this book. I think I came across the concept in a psychology magazine or something, but I always identified with Jughead's seeming lack of interest in dating 😅 It has been nice seeing increased representation in the past few years, though (well, an increase from nothing to occasionally something). (edited) 3w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @TieDyeDude It's awesome how we all find our identities in so many different ways. Representation is so important. I just hope ace rep becomes more and more prominent (I think I've read most of the good stuff now). I wish I had these books in secondary school when I was at my most confused. Yes! Agents of Winter | Ada Maria Soto
post image
Pickpick

A nostalgic reread treasured for the much needed comfort it brings. Soto captures the deeply eloquent, vulnerable inner life of her characters perfectly, penning a novella built on the foundation of enduring affection & a no-frills storyline where my favourite couple take a vacation to NYC, face childhood ghosts, shady art dealers & eat a great deal of food. A novella that, for me, feels like that small contented sigh breathed right before sleep.

Bailedbailed

I'm certainly in the vast minority of people who did not enjoy this book - I even opted to #hailthebail with little under a hundred pages to go as I found myself skimming whole paragraphs. I found the constant ping-pong of trump cards between the characters tiresome, all of whom I found obnoxious and unlikeable to the point of being exasperated by them. (1/?)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird There's no denying that Torrey Peter's is a superb writer, a worthy winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction on the merit of her skills as an gifted wordsmith and storyteller, penning a flirty, humorous story that's somehow dark and empowering in equal measure, but the pacing issues had a tendency to pull me out of the narrative. I found the chapters placed in the present far more engaging than the ones exploring the past. (2/?) 3w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I wish Katrina's POV was explored in greater detail as the only POC in the novel. Narratives revolving around motherhood (or parenthood, in general) aren't something I find myself reading. However, I did appreciate that motherhood was explored through various realistic avenues and especially appreciated the concept of the three-parent family and, more importantly, trans motherhood. (3/?) 3w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I found myself totally absorbed at the beginning, but my attention eventually waned and fizzled out entirely. I posed the question: Are you invested enough in this story to care about the conclusion? Unfortunately, I wasn't, and I'm of the mind that life is too short to force yourself to finish books you are not particularly finding engaging. (4/?) 3w
See All 6 Comments
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Despite my criticism, Peter's has created something extremely original, and I especially loved how the novel didn't take an overly political standpoint and explored trans life in the distinction between 'being trans' and 'doing trans'. Here's hoping this is the rise of more trans voices being heard through literature 🏳️‍⚧️. 3w
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Don't be dissuaded from checking this novel out for yourself, though, because it might just become one of your new favourites 🩵🤍🩷. (5/5) 3w

A spy novella without the usual espionage & histrionics, replacing melodrama with a chaste love story between a demisexual analyst & insoluble asexual secret agent who vanishes on a covert op, leaving an almost empty apartment & a library full of Arthurian-obsessed children in his wake. Truly puzzled of the adoration this novel receives. The purple prose diminishes any appreciation for a talented wordsmith. The philosophical spiel feels unbearably trifling. The springboard for colourful debate is undermined by the upper-class plight one can not muster sympathy for, until the whole novel feels nauseatingly indulgent, with a cast of interchangeable, shallow characters. Another writer churning out insipid, frivolous pieces of lit.

Glitterland is a romance with a twist. Rather than focusing on the fuzzy feelings associated with the genre, Hall explores the "ugly" parts of the human psyche; the miserly, the selfish, the egotism, the self-sabotage, penning painfully human, imperfect characters. A novel so accurate to the experiences of a person with mental health issues, that it's impossible not to see yourself, scattered & eloquent, across the pages. Heartbreaking & healing.

I slammed my head into the pages of this book so many times out of pure frustration, and that was the incentive I needed to #hailthebail. The first instalment had pacing issues - everything was happening too damn quickly - which irked me, so it's like a cruel twist of irony that the opposite is true for the sequel - the sloth-like pace was mind-numbing. And the main characters brother - I hate him, I hate him, I hate him! (1/3)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird Any love I harboured for the other characters and curiosity to where this adventure was heading was unceremoniously devoured by my dislike of him. There's only so many times a person can handle his woe-is-me attitude before they throw a book across the room. (2/3) 1mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Whether the reader is supposed to feel sympathetic to his plight or outright hate him, I'm not sure, but the more chapters his POV consumed, the more my hope faded of reaching the conclusion. I have absolutely no idea why we were pulled out of the narrative of the extremely likeable main character for that sob-story-misery-guts-wannabe-hero *rant over* (3/3). 1mo

Perfect for fans of TJ Klune's, The Extraordinaries, and X-Men (with more LBGTQ+ rep), Infinity Son is an urban fantasy with lots of moral peril and magical creatures! It's a little predictable, and unfortunately reads more like a Wattpad story, though my biggest complaint is that the pacing issues had a tendency to pull you out of the action as everything was happening too damn quickly. I just wanted to scream, WAIT, WHAT? so many times. (1/3)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird Honestly, you let your thoughts wonder for even a second, and someone has been kidnapped, or a major plot twist has come and gone in a sentence. Also, I can't help but feel that the story lacks the heart I usually associate with Adam Silvera's writing. And confession, a few of the characters made me want to throttle them (is that terrible of me?). (2/3) 1mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I'm not majorly invested, but since I already own the next instalment, I'll probably finish the series. Underwhelmed, but I think the world-building is super neat, so kudos on that, Silvera! I shudder to think how there was anything to edit at all - it ended precariously (cliffhanger not well executed), and again, those pacing issues were frustrating. (3/3) 1mo

Boy Erased: A Memoir | Garrard Conley
post image
Pickpick

Boy Erased is a heart-wrenching memoir about nineteen year old Garrard Conley's experience after he is outed by his rapist in college to his Baptist parents and subsequently enrolled in a Southern Arkansas conversion therapy program called Love in Action where he is introduced to damaging methods and idealogy to "cure" him of his sexual orientation. How a parent could inflict this on their child is beyond me. (1/?)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird I've watched the satirical Cult Classic 'But I'm a Cheerleader' and the equally poignant adaption of this novel, but reading the inner narrative of a survivor of conversion therapy is another thing entirely. How is this happening in almost every US state? How are LGBTQIA+ people still being failed by politicians? How are parents subjecting their children to these heinous "methods"? (2/?) 1mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird It breaks my heart that Conley is just one voice in an ocean of the voiceless who has experienced this kind of trauma. I found myself frustrated by various online reviews that attempted to minimise Conley's experience by the number of days *8* he spent in Love in Action and thought it was erroneous that so many people had opinions on how he should tell his own story, claiming that his crisis of faith and relationship with god should have (3/?) 1mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird taken a back pedal in favour of concentrating on the inner dialogue of his sexual orientation. Perhaps I'm feeling overly protective of him after experiencing his past alongside him by reading his memoir. Harrowing & raw, it might be an extremely difficult topic to read about, but I think it's important for everyone to hear Conley's voice. As a queer person, I know how lucky I am to grow up with a supportive, liberal, atheist parent. (4/?) 1mo

TheIntrovertedDodoBird [added my favourite piece of art to the collage, We Two Boys Together Clinging, by David Hockney, albeit humble and crude in style, yet politically, it also inspired my favourite poem by Walt Whitman, and I was reminded of it while reading Conley's memoir] 1mo
JenniferEgnor Saw the film adaptation on Netflix. Infuriating that this is still legal in a lot of places. 1mo
peanutnine So heartbreaking. I don't know if I could handle reading this one, it makes me sick to think of the abuse inflicted by parents on their children 1mo

I have officially entered my poetry era! Focusing on LGBTQ+ feminist and/or political poetry; a bleary-eyed insomnia-fuelled Internet search inspired a vast love for Zoe Leonard, who penned I Want a President in 1992 for an LGBTQ+ magazine when - queer activist & poet - Eileen Myles announced that she was running for the presidency of the US as an independent candidate against Bush & Clinton.

TheIntrovertedDodoBird What's startling is the relevance Leonard's poem still has today, especially when it was erected on the High Line, Manhattan, in the 2016 presidential elections. Leonard said that she probably wouldn't write this exact poem today as her views on identity politics have changed, but I just find it incredible - not the mention shocking - that the relevance is just a poignant in 2024! Diving into her artwork next! 1mo

My favourite, and I love the ambiguity over the interpretation (I rarely agree with historians when it comes to most topics on literature and poetry, and this time is no different) 🤍🤎.

Pickpick

A dream-bending, riotously queer fantasy that is glorious in every way. I'm here for all of it; evil sorceress drag queen, tropes glore, YA nostalgia deftly wielded into something both familiar and innovative, LGBTQ romance, villainous monologues, dream-logic! I mean, what's not to love? I just want to throw confetti at it and recommend it to everyone within shouting distance! Exploring the subconscious with a super relatable protag! Love it! 🌈🎉

TheIntrovertedDodoBird Plus, it's one of the prettiest books on my shelf! Kudos to the cover designers whoever they may be! 🌈🎉🏳️‍🌈 2mo
