Great Gatsby (Classic)
Great Gatsby (Classic) | F Scott Fitzgerald
One of the classics of twentieth-century literature, "The Great Gatsby" is now available in a definitive, textually accurate edition. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan has been acclaimed by generations of readers. But the first edition contained a number of errors resulting from Fitzgerald's extensive revisions and a rushed production schedule. Subsequent printings introduced further departures from the author's words. This edition, based on the Cambridge critical text, restores all the language of Fitzgerald's masterpiece. Drawing on the manuscript and surviving proof of the novel, along with Fitzgerald's later revisions and corrections, this is the authorized text - "The Great Gatsby" as Fitzgerald intended it.

A long overdue reread. I can‘t believe this would be on any high school reading list because what would a teen relate to in this novel?

I can‘t say I enjoyed Fitzgerald‘s writing style, but I did enjoy examination of Nick‘s loss of innocence about humanity and the American promise of infinite progress.

Ruthiella I think it works for high schoolers in that the themes are pretty easy to get and write an essay about. 3mo
willaful It\'s one of the few required books I actually enjoyed. The Scarlet Letter, now there was a ridiculous choice.

My kid\'s English curriculum was so much more interesting!
3mo
Tamra @Ruthiella yes to the themes, pretty universal. But I‘m thinking the writing style & the fact the MC is 30 wouldn‘t be enjoyable. 3mo

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that‘s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . .And one fine morning-

4✨ I remember reading this in high school, but not quite understanding/remembering how it ended. As an adult I think I was able to absorb more of the story with understanding. This story is short, but it is expertly crafted. It‘s about love, loss, sacrifice, jealousy, bad decisions, and unlikely friends. I‘m glad I decided to do a reread.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘ve been thinking I should do a reread of this soon as well. It was my most hated book that school made me read, but I feel like I would probably have a better understanding/different attitude about it now. 12mo
TheLudicReader I think this is one of those books that needs a re-read. I didn‘t even like it until I‘d read it three times. Now …I think it‘s a beautiful book. 🤣 12mo
Ruthiella I also read this first in high school and appreciated it more on a second read. 12mo
mandarchy This is an interesting conversation. I reread it and still didn't like it. Maybe I harbor too much shame about alcoholism. I'm still not sure why it's such an important read, but I'm not willing to give it a third try. 😂 11mo

This was definitely one of the best classics I've read. I'm trying to determine what and how I feel about the story. It definitely impacted me. My mind is turning it over and over. Tragedy of course. Misguided love. Depravity of human nature. Triumph of the soul. All these things. 3 words: I loved it. Read it

This was my first time reading a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald so i wasnt sure what to expect especially since the reviews for it over the years are very up and down but i have to say i did enjoy it even tho the first few chapters came off repetitive but overall the connection for the story came together beautifully. Genre: Classic
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,".

First, Gyllenhaal is a surprisingly adept celebrity narrator. 🤩 Knowing the story of how this book wasn‘t popular until it was mass printed for soldiers in WWII, I can see how the setting and hypermasculinity of Buchanan and Gatsby made this a hit. I can see why many high schoolers, myself included, relate to the gossipy elements of this story. That said, as an adult, this is just okay. It‘s been way over analyzed for a mediocre book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

CBee I really didn‘t like this when I read it in school 🤭 2y
