Not my cuppa.

This was assigned for Romance Book Club, and there wasn't any romance.

Vampire hunting is not my thing.

I read this, but I think I've learned that I don't have to read something just because it's assigned. Life's too short to read books that do nothing for you.

**The post-it notes are there so I have examples to support my (correct) opinion at the meeting

I decided I want to start the Anita Blake series; I guess I didn‘t realize this series started in 93! That‘s pretty cool 😅

5feet.of.fury You are in for quite a journey, I think she‘s up to 29 books 2y
Cailey_Mac @5feet.of.fury I really am but I love a challenge 😅 2y
5feet.of.fury @Cailey_Mac I was wrong it‘s 32 🤪 but I binged the 1st 20 pretty quickly about 10 years ago, and then I‘ve been current since then. Totally doable. I‘m just along for the ride at this point. Started the newest today! Haha 2y
Cailey_Mac @5feet.of.fury omg that‘s awesome! I‘m enjoying it so far, I‘m soooo curious where the storyline can go over so many books! 2y

Bk1 of #AwesomeAugust #readathon was done on Monday but I completely forgot to post! The 1st in the Anita Blake,Vampire Hunter series, I read it while #audioknitting. It‘s slowly getting there,I‘m not the worlds fastest knitter by a long shot. The book is always a great read, Anita is a zombie raiser in St Louis & vampire executioner on the side when she‘s forced to look into vampire murders by the city‘s head vampire. #BookspinBingo #Litsycrafters

TheAromaofBooks I do love browsing yarn at the craft store, even though I never seem to crochet as much as I think I will!! 2y

Calling it a night on my #AwesomeAugust #readathon Day2. It‘s 1.30am Sunday morning here & I‘m going cross eyed trying to knit so I think it‘s bedtime for me. Decided to go with a Slytherin colour choice for bubbas blankie, thanks to a suggestion by a fellow #litsycrafter (can‘t remember who though🤷🏻‍♀️)& the fact his mummy is a slytherin. Yes I know the greens wrong but it‘s the thought that counts right? Night y‘all🥱 #audioknitting #zzzzzzz

Tamra I think it‘s a beautiful combo! 2y

Got in a few hours for the #AwesomeAugust #readathon by #audioknitting to the 1st Anita Blake novel. This series is a bit of a “guilty pleasure” for me(though I think the term should be abolished for books. You like what you like🤷🏻‍♀️)I don‘t read many romance books but this series starts off more as a crime book that happens to have hot vampires in it(and scary ass ones too). How‘s your readathon going? #audiocrafting #slytherincoloursnext

5feet.of.fury The early ones were so good, they do go completely off the rails… I still read them though 🤣 2y
Tamra Seeing yarn now makes me as happy as books! 😃 What are you making and how do you like that yarn? I‘m looking for a cotton that is soft, but absorbent enough for kitchen use. 2y
Lizpixie @5feet.of.fury me too😋 2y
See All 8 Comments
Lizpixie @Tamra I‘m knitting a cuddle blanket for my grandson. I‘m liking the yarn very much, it‘s the first time I‘ve worked with cotton so there was a learning curve but I‘ve got the hang of it now. It‘s soft enough without being too soft, not sure of the absorbency though. I‘ve liked it enough to buy Fiddlesticks Superb Big for a shawl I want to knit next. It‘s an anti pilling acrylic but it‘s sooo soft. I‘m a bit of a yarn hoarder too🧶🧶🧶 2y
Tamra @Lizpixie oh I can see why! 😅😆 I‘ve liked working with cotton so far. It‘s just a tad sticky so it doesn‘t tend to fall off the needles for me, but that could be the brand. I‘ve just ordered some Dishie cotton yarn from Knitpicks. 🤞🏾🤞🏾 Dish towels are the perfect learning projects for various stitches! 2y
Lizpixie @Tamra I found that switching to metal needles helped tremendously with the movement of the yarn. I started on Knit Pro Symfonie wooden circular needles & had trouble so switched to Chia Goo metal needles & haven‘t looked back.👍 2y
Tamra @Lizpixie good to know, thank you! 2y
Andrew65 I agree, why should it be a guilty pleasure. I love a good romance, and what would be termed Chick Lit! A great start time 👏👏👏 2y

Started the Anita Blake series. When were these originally written?! She‘s talking about pagers and having her answering machine for only a short period of time 🤣

These were definitely what I was looking for. A bit like the female version of Harry Dresden but a bit sexier. Also all the creatures are known and not hidden.

This was definitely a quick read and I have about 20+ more I can read 🤪.

HeyT If I remember this series correctly it jumps the shark when she went through her divorce and suddenly hated the character she modeled on her husband but it‘s been a looooooong time since I‘ve read this series 3y
PuddleJumper These get really bad, really quickly. The first few are pretty good then they become badly written porn 3y
HeatherBlue I felt the same way @PuddleJumper !! Another good paranormal romance series I read after I had to leave this one was the Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur ❤️ 3y
See All 10 Comments
Laughterhp @HeyT @PuddleJumper Oh no! Well I guess that‘s good to know. I‘m on book 2 right now and it‘s been good so far! We‘ll see when I change my mind. 3y
Laughterhp @HeatherBlue I‘ll check that series out!! 3y
Bookishlie It‘s amazing until about book 11 or 12 then it starts to go by 12 it was pushing it. I gave up by 14. I keep thinking I‘ll restart it. But the first dozen I loved. 3y
Bookzombie I still pick these up on occasion. They definitely aren‘t as good as the earlier ones, but I enjoy them. I have book 16 on my TBR for hopefully this month. I sometimes think about just going back to the beginning though. ☺️ @HeatherBlue I also enjoyed the Riley Jenson series. (edited) 3y
Laughterhp @Bookishlie Oh that‘s good to know it starts to get bad at book 11 or 12. I was thinking it would be a waste of my time to continue the series if it got bad at book 4 or 5. 3y
Laughterhp @Bookzombie I will be sure to lower my expectations as I move on and if I continue past like book 10. 3y
HeyT Looking at goodreads I think the divorce was around book seven and eight but I gave up at book ten. 3y

I found I was dumped into the story, no beginning. I am not fond of the main character. The characters were empty, no substance. This is the first book I have read of this author. I think she should go read Kim Harrison's books. #NSR221 Horror Supernatural genre. @Nessavamusic

Nessavamusic I agree! Though very influential to urban fantasy, she‘s not my favorite. Her books haven‘t aged well. 3y

This was almost a So-so for me. It lacked the character development that I crave so much. Lots of action and the plot was good. Yet, I never connected to the character. I wish the editor had used a heavier handing the editing process. There were a few scenes that could have been deleted because they didn't do much to further the plot. 3.5ish⭐ #screamathon2020 @4thhouseontheleft #Scarathon2020 @StayCurious #TeamHarkness Points = 26

Leniverse I read several books in that series many years ago. I never connected with the MC either. But I did like the stories and some of the side characters. But eventually the books became 60% sex, 30% angst/guilt about sex, and 10% plot, and I still didn't care for the MC, so I abandoned the series. 4y
TheSpineView @Leniverse Thanks for the info. It just confirms my decision not to read further into the series. 4y
Fr3NcHtOaSt Only read that one in the series and I liked it but just couldn‘t never pick up the series after that no matter how many times I‘ve tried. 4y

I have always been a fan of Anita Blake series since I was a teenager. Re-reading it now I can see a lot of flaws in terms of writing style: repetitive use of words, simple sentences and basic vocabulary. If you are willing to overlook that, the book still offers a lot of fun if you love vampires, zombies etc. On the plus side, the simple expressive ability of the writer makes for a quick enjoyable read.

Lizpixie @BGam only if you find one in a pawnshop! @ljuliel This particular one is about 12yrs old and while it doesn‘t hold charge as long as it used to, it still holds it long enough to finish a 20+hr audiobook. 5y

My partner and I finished this last night and jumped right into book 2 in the series. We both thoroughly enjoyed this one. Lycanthropes, vampires, zombies, could you ask for anything better?

Marilyncjackson Oh just a warning these get really heavy on the erotica after the Obsidian Butterfly. I loved this series but haven‘t followed it in a couple of years. It was so nice to be reminded of the badass Anita Blake I fell in love with so many books ago. I read this for comfort, but rediscovered how great this series used to be. Just a brave woman with a bunch of guns and an attitude against vampires, shapeshifters, zombies and ghouls. Definitely left me wanting to reread the rest of the series...at least until the relationship stuff overwhelms the badassery. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I was introduced to this series when I was in middle school (probably too early for romance novels but I don‘t care). Anita Blake is bomb she‘s a badass who raises the dead, helps solve paranormal crimes, and deals with vampires like it‘s no big deal. As the series progresses I like it less and less but the first like 10 books are so engaging and pack full of mystery and paranormal beings and situations. After the sixth book sex is the big focus.

I love that I found this series so many years ago in high school, it just kept getting better as the series progressed. I own basically all of the books in multiple formats. I can't say how many times I have read this book over again just to see the difference between the beginning and current characters. The series does getting smutty but I read erotica so it doesn't change my feelings on the series. Fantastic start with great characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was fun, action-packed, and better written than I thought it would be. Unfortunately nonsensical plot points, the lack of in-depth world building, and the sarcastically obnoxious main character got in the way of my full enjoyment of the book. Also the ratmen rapists and the fact that Anita had to kiss people to pretend to be their lovers multiple times. It‘s very indulgent but overall it kept me entertained until I finished.

Crystalblu Honestly, the series gets worse as it goes along. I am far from a prude and I was over all the super over the top sex. 7y
Lylah @Crystalblu gosh even the plot? That‘s disappointing 🙄 I‘m not a prude either but I can‘t make myself read smut 7y

Lylah @Crystalblu what a bummer!! Do you have any recommendations for better series in a similar genre? Every time I try one I‘m disappointed by the quality... 7y
Crystalblu Hmmm, I started reading the Anita books because they were billed as an X rated Buffy and I told ya how that ended 😜 but, I did really enjoy the Sookie books aka, True Blood. And, different but still fun is J.D. Robb‘s In Death series. Happy reading! 7y
Lylah @Crystalblu haha yeah, it definitely wasn‘t buffy in any way! I‘ll check out those (from the library in case I hate them haha). Thanks for the suggestions! 7y
Christy2318 Try Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (the first 3 or so are a little weak & there is a rape plot point I don‘t care for BUT book 4 on are great & Mercy is a fantastic character. Also the Others series by Anne Bishop is really good. 7y
Christy2318 I almost forgot The Sentinels of New Orleans series by Suzanne Johnson. Book one is too reminiscent of Sookie Stackhouse but after that they are great. I‘m especially fond of the historically undead pirate, Jean Lafitte. 7y
Lylah @Christy2318 I tried out the first Mercy Thompson book! It was decent but not great. I don‘t know if I can sit through two more before it gets good, haha. I‘ve had Kate Daniels on my TBR for a little while but haven‘t gotten around to it. Thanks for the suggestions! 7y
