Symphony of Echoes: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Two
Symphony of Echoes: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Two | Jodi Taylor
The second book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone s cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary s Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don t call it time travel these historians investigate major historical events in contemporary time. And they aren t your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets. The Chronicles of St. Mary s tells the chaotic adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriotsDirector Bairstow, Leon Chief Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many moreas they travel through time, saving St. Mary s (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea. In the sequel to "Just One Damned Thing After Another," Max and company visit Victorian London in search of Jack the Ripper, witness the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, and discover that dodos make a grockling noise when eating cucumber sandwiches. But they must also confront an enemy intent on destroying St. Mary san enemy willing, if necessary, to destroy history itself to do it. Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a "New York Times" bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors."

Another fun romp with the folks from St. Mary‘s! This time we travel to Whitechapel, look for Do-Dos and visit the court of Mary, Queen of Scotland. As usual there is drama, intrigue, tension and comedy.

My third and final finish for #MarvellousMarch

A bad guy is fiddling with the timeline, killing and destroying history. St Mary‘s to the rescue (after a raucous dodo hunt as a stress reliever and team building exercise). Our heroine, Maxwell, and team head to Scotland to ensure events happen so the Queen loses her head and find the bad guy. Is history set right? I‘m looking forward to book 3. Hilarious, dramatic, a little of every genre—history, sci fi, romance… such a rip-roaring good time ⬇️

So I messed up my graphic and this is actually my #BookSpin - sounds about right for my month so far.

I‘m really loving this series! This is the second book in the St Mary chronicles. I love all the places in history they go. I already have the 3rd book, so I can‘t wait to pick it up. A plot line kind of confused me where I didn‘t understand exactly what was going on, but it kind of resolved itself.

These books are perfect when you need something fast paced, fun and not too serious. The characters are quirky and loveable, but I swear there was enough plot for 4 separate books here! I would have happily read an entire novel about the Jack the Ripper episode which took up all of 2 chapters...

Well for a book two it wasn't that bad. I had a great time reading about Max and company on their madcap adventure through time. I was a little over the romantic angst but I love the world and the characters so it was still a fun read. I can see why everyone who talks about this is so fond of it.

Forgot to post my #bookspin update last weekend. I love these books! There‘s just always so much going on. Great when you just need to turn off and enjoy some action! This is the second in the series. I think the order dictates that I read 2 short stories before the next book but I found the last short to actually be quite boring so considering jumping ahead. Anyone read Jodi Taylor?

The constant nemesis Ronan is back and that is after encountering Jack the Ripper, witnessing the assassination of Thomas Becket, Max and Leon being sent to a spa for the rich and famous and then having to travel into the future which is always problematic.
Not quite as irreverent as Jasper Fford but pretty damn close.
3.5/5 Stars.

I found some pacing & timing problems in this second installment of “The Chronicles of St. Mary‘s,” which is especially unfortunate for a book that revolves around time travel. But, I‘m willing to forgive anything because the cast of characters is so, utterly charming. The audio narration‘s fab (it‘s the only reason I‘m hanging on to my Audible subscription), & the historical personages visited, fascinating: Jack the Ripper, & Mary Queen of Scots!

rmaclean4 This is such a fun series!! 5y
monalyisha @rmaclean4 I love it so much. I also hate it because I genuinely did want to cancel Audible. 😅 5y
rmaclean4 Have you tried Scribd? 5y
See All 9 Comments
monalyisha @ramaclean4 No...🤔 Tell me more? 5y
rmaclean4 @monalyisha half the monthly cost and "unlimited" books. They do slow your roll near the end of the month. Lots and lots of audiobooks as well as ebooks. Tons of new releases. The app can be slow to load at times...but that could be that my saved list is ridiculously long. The game changer for me is that you can adjust the reading speed, which is a must have. 5y
monalyisha @rmaclean4 I'll have to check it out! I usually do just fine with the MA & RI library consortiums, along with Hoopla -- but this is the one series that I can't find at the library (given the giant “Only from Audible“ advertisement plastered along its front). Is it weirdly on Scribd? (edited) 5y
rwmg @monalyisha @rmaclean4 The books are on Scribd, but not the audiobook versions. 5y
monalyisha @rwmag Okay. Thanks. I rarely do e-books (unless I'm traveling, or desperate, or Stephanie Burgis neglects to publish a print version of something 😉) but this could still be a helpful resource! (edited) 5y
monalyisha Note: I forgot to mention, too, that this second book is interesting because of the ethical dilemma(s) presented. Max has a professional duty NOT to interfere with history, & to make sure that things play out the way they‘re meant to, *and* she has a duty as a woman to other women to prevent pain, trauma, & victimhood. The problem is not solved — but it is touched upon, & its complexity & her complicity acknowledged, in a sad & nuanced way. 5y

‘A Symphony of Echoes‘ is the second book in The Chronicles of St. Mary‘s, a series about a team of time traveling historians. In this adventure, they actually interact with history instead of just observing, but at the risk of creating a paradox (If you alter history, you alter the present/future.)

Not the best writing (Transitional bridges do not seem to be the author‘s forte) BUT individual scene work is very good and it‘s all FUN 🙂

I enjoyed this 2nd installment in the St. Mary‘s series, but not as much as the first. The first was a little all over the place, but pulled it together. This was just all over the place. Several digressions were fun but didn‘t seem to fit, so I found myself not paying attention to other digressions that turned out to be important. And I‘m still bothered by a scene with Bothwell & Mary Stuart...😕 But overall it was fun & I‘ll read the next one!
