1/5 ⭐️ you can tell it‘s based on Dahmer. All-around strange.

Inspired by serial killer Jeffery Dahmer, this book is written from the perspective of a man obsessed with having his own zombie sex slave. Written in a kind of journal style. It was interesting and different, but I couldn't get into the style of writing. If you can't get enough serial killers, and don't mind some graphic content, then check this one out.

TheLudicReader It always takes me a while to settle into the way Oates writes, but when I do I generally like her books. 6mo

While I enjoy a thriller, classic horror and “scary” books, I refuse to read a book that is filled with graphic and intense violence and physical abuse.
This story of a serial killer is the one and only book that I deliberately decided not to finish.

I wanted something shocking, and this absolutely delivered. A short read, and writing style takes a little time to get used to. But I‘m astounded at how well Joyce Carol Oates wrote the mind of a sex-obsessed serial killer. It‘s jarring, how believable her writing is here.

Also, I can 1000% see Jeffrey Dahmer in this story, especially after seeing the Netflix show.

Thank you so much for the recommendation @tjwill - I was truly horrified by this!

DivineDiana I never #DNF a book, with this one exception. Much admiration for Joyce Carol Oates, but the horrific details were too upsetting. (edited) 1y
tjwill I‘m glad it was what you were looking for! @DivineDiana I probably would have stopped too but I really wanted to know if there was justice served for what he had done. You have to be in the right mindset for it. JCO definitely has a way with embodying a character, even a disturbing one. 1y

Got until May 1st to figure out enough ways to say "it's boring" to fill a book club.

Michael_Gee What. Boring? 1y
khooliha @Michael_Gee I just didn't like this one! It was too repetitive for my taste. 1y
Michael_Gee @khooliha omg. I thought it was so disturbing. Fuck u til u “bleed blue guts” is a line that fascinates and haunts me. I thought her detached voice really worked for this story. Ugh, it‘s so gross and upsetting! How was your book club discussion? 1y
khooliha @Michael_Gee Some people were really into it, disturbed in the way you were. I think I was well in the minority on this one. 1y

4-18-22: My 37th finished book of 2022! I really didn‘t enjoy this one. The subject matter is disturbing. We are in the mind of Quentin P. He is on probation for sexual misconduct with a minor. He is trying to find someone to be his “zombie”. Someone who will do his bidding without complaint. While being a caretaker for a boarding house, he comes up with deviant plans to achieve his goal. Not my favorite Oates novel. ⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣3️⃣7️⃣

This was very disturbing. This won the 1995 Bram Stoker Award for best novel and I can see why. Oates based this off Jeffrey Dahmer. The whole book we‘re inside the mind of serial killer Quentin P. who just wants to make someone into his own personal zombie. This was on par with Jack Ketchum for me. I will be reading more Oates. Sidenote- this is my first library book in over a decade. Which is funny because when I opened this book, I thought👇🏼

Reggie Oh great, a crazy person had it before me. And technically I was right, because the main character, Quentin, doodles or adds numbers on the pages of the book as he‘s telling you his story. Lol 3y
Simona Have you read 3y
Rissreads This sounds great! Stacked! Who doesn‘t like a little bit of crazy! Were their doodles of gruesome stuff like knives dripping with blood and similar stuff or boring mundane doodles? (edited) 3y

Reggie @Simona I haven‘t. Is it good? 3y
TrishB Great review 😁 3y
Reggie @Rissreads it becomes disturbing because if you didn‘t know who he was they would just look like kid drawings but because you DO know who he is they seem menacing. 3y
Reggie @TrishB Thanks! 3y
JudeCC Sounds AMAZING! I LOVE when they are inside the mind of a character!! Thanks for sharing!! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Interesting..doodles on the margins as the mc narrates! 3y
batsy Reggie, I'm interested in the seemingly benign doodles that are actually menacing in the context of the book that it's in. Kinda creepy! Feel like that's the start of your meta horror novel 💀 3y
DivineDiana I am a fan of Joyce Carol Oates, and have had the pleasure of attending an in person small event at a local bookstore for her. That being said, this book is the only one in my entire life that I DNF. It was that disturbing for me. (edited) 3y
Cathythoughts Great review and absolutely stacked 👍 3y
TNbookworm As always a great review 👍🙂 3y
Simona Not so disturbing as Zombie sounds, but still very uncomfortable read. It was my one of favourites from last year. 3y
Bookzombie Yes! This could be shelved right next to The Girl Next Door. 3y
vivastory I don't know if you have read her short story The Doll-Master, but that story is something else...I'll have to check this one out...I also recall liking this collection of novellas by her 3y
Reggie @WJCintron @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy the doodles are made menacing because he has this “oh gee golly me” thing going on until you realize he‘s drinking, on quaaludes and about to kidnap someone, and has his ice pick for a lobotomy ready back at whatever place. And before it became a joke for them to be the kidnapper‘s official vehicle he actually drives a white van around with an American flag decal and a “I brake for animals” bumper sticker. 3y
Reggie @DivineDiana I don‘t blame you. It got rough, and I love horror. 3y
Reggie @Cathythoughts You just became a new grandma again, Cathy. Don‘t read this one. ❤️ 3y
Reggie @TBbookworm Thanks! 3y
Reggie @Bookzombie Yes! The whole back half of this book, the lead up to Squirrel boy, I was kinda squirming the whole time. 3y
Reggie @vivastory I‘m definitely gonna read more of her but this one was, uh, a lot. I‘m gonna have to give her some time before I come back to her. 3y
Cathythoughts @Reggie Thankyou ❤️. I won‘t read it 3y
Cathythoughts Thanks Reggie X 3y
readordierachel I'm stacking this, but I'm also scared to read it. I can do creepy, but gruesome is hard for me. Maybe when I'm feeling brave 😆 3y
Reggie @readordierachel this is the book that if I were a parent and my kids were playing outside, I would have done that Hispanic thing parents do where I would have run outside and yelled at them as if it were their fault and told them to get inside the house but it would have been because it was the book. And then they would have grown up resenting me because they had no idea why I was always mad at them and they vowed to be different parents but👇🏼 3y
Reggie enough time goes by and then they have kids of their own and one day they yell at their kids out of misplaced concern and care and then a lightbulb goes on. Lololol 3y
readordierachel Bahahaha 😂 3y
Centique Ha! I love your comment about taking it out on your kids. I‘m sure I do something like that after I listen to a scary news story or something. This book sounds FREAKY. I will give it a miss but a respectful nod of the head to it as I pass by 😉 3y
Centique PS didn‘t we talk about her book We Were The Mulvaneys years ago on here? That book made me so angry. 😡 (edited) 3y
Reggie @Centique yes, this is totally not your book. And yeah, I went to go look up that chat and you said you wanted to give those parents a piece of your mind. I like the spicy takes. I still want to read the Tartt and the Franzen because of your comments. Lol, someday, Paula. 3y

Another creepy, Dahmer inspired work. While it still had its gorey moments, this one seemed focused more on streams of consciousness, how they changed while the character was on different substances, and in relaying his past crimes and planning his next.

I‘ve got time for one more horror/scary/creepy book before #Halloween so I‘m diving in.

This novel goes inside the head of a fictional serial killer, but it‘s based on notorious real-life killer Jeffery Dahmer. And while JCO is super hit or miss for me, I really love what she did in her reimaginings of Marilyn Monroe and Jonbenet Ramsey, so I‘m pumped.

Oates succeeds brilliantly in getting inside the head of her Dahmeresque serial killer narrator, and if her intention was to de-glamourise the myth of the serial killer I think she is to be applauded. Q is a repulsive, deluded loser whose presence we quit with a shudder of relief. Some fairly graphic and stomach-churning scenes of male rape and torture. Not really my sort of thing but I can admire the skill with which she brings it off.

A highly disturbing book - it put me off my lunch today.
Oates‘ not-so-fictional take on Jeffrey Dahmer, this book puts you inside the mind of a psychopath. The drawings were particularly eerie, reminding me of things I‘d read/seen in Psych classes/in internships.
I‘m left wondering... if Quentin (Dahmer) had been allowed to explore his sexuality with no judgment, no guilt, would things have turned out differently for everyone?

A quick (and disturbing) morning read thanks to #ravenmail postal book club!

I had no idea what this short novel would be about, as I didn‘t read the synopsis and just started reading. It is fast-paced and a fascinating look into the writing mind of Joyce Carol Oates. She wrote one of my favorite novels of 2017, and I am beginning to see a trend with her and I like it. A lot.

If you want to be swept away by a sociopathic serial killer, dig in.

I am afraid of Joyce Carol Oates. How did she ever think to write such a disturbing story? It's as if we were watching the most frightening Criminal Minds episode exclusively from the point of view of the obviously deranged stalker/serial killer/rapist and could not turn off the television. I am still shivering. And yet, I really liked this book.

CouronneDhiver Does it have anything to do with zombies? Or is that more of a metaphoric title? 8y

Easily the scariest book I've ever read (I also read this one for a class in college...God, I miss college). Oates sat in on Jeffrey Dahmer's trial, and this book is largely based on him. If you're interested in serial killers, I highly recommend. Just don't read it at night.
