🎧 The cover got me. I found myself trying to adjust to the story from the get-go,. I‘m not huge into WWII era steampunk. The story suddenly picks up, makes sense, explains much & takes off like a shot!
Enjoyed. I‘d read a second book.

Thank you Sarah for the birthday gift! I‘m so excited and really appreciate your thoughtfulness! @TheAromaofBooks
This was a fantastical reimagining of WWI. In this #Steampunk version there are the Darwinists who have learned to create new hybrid animals that are part machine like the leviathan airship that is part whale/part zeppelin.
Prince Aleksander of the Austro-Hungarian throne is on the run. Deryn Sharp is a teenage girl pretending to be a boy so she could join the Britsh airforce. War is just starting to break out & already they are in trouble.
I came hesitantly, but from the first page action and adventure had me rolling along with the story. Battles between fabricated creatures and futuristic machinery were mind boggling. It was Star Wars in Europe at the beginning of WWI. And, did I mention that Churchill and Charles Darwin's granddaughter are foes? This #dieselpunk ROCKED!!!!! #BBRC @LibrarianRyan #SeriesRead2022 @TheSpineView

I found this to be an interesting world in which some countries go all in for steampunk and others go all in for genetic engineering. There‘s also a fair bit of alt-history WWI. I found Deryn and Alex to be engaging POV characters but my only quibble is that I feel like this ended very abruptly.

Had a good reading week because I managed to finish three books. I was not truly disappointed with any that I read.

My plan is to move on to my library books and earn those sweet raffle tickets with the summer reading program. I'm putting all my tickets in the Cricut prize pool.
This book was a good alternative history. It‘s a steampunk-like alternate history of WWI told by the POV of heir to the throne of Austria and a soldier in the war, a girl posing as a boy. I don‘t usually like men writing women characters but despite a few missteps he did well. This was a quick read and interesting and I could see a YA reader loving it.
I feel bad about this quote:( I mean I know this is a fake story and non-existent animal but I hate any time animals are hurt. But I‘m especially vulnerable because I lost my favorite chicken to the dogs last night 😢
“The Austrian horses glinted in the moonlight, their riders standing tall in the saddle, swords raised. “ #firstlinefridays @ShyBookOwl

In true steampunk tradition, this story is a blend of possible futures and an alternate past. I found Leviathan a creative story and especially loved the beasties he created. Also enjoyed the detail of Keith Thompson's illustrations as a bonus.
Sundays are for reading! Loving the illustrations in this edition.
The game tonight was so good I didn‘t even spare a single thought for the in case of emergency book in my purse.
Reluctantly I will rouse myself to feed the family

Absolutely loved this fun, steampunk book. The concept of machines versus fabricated animals was fantastic and very unique. It was a lot of fun and I think it was a great way to rework the telling of WWI. The characters were fun and so easy to like. Can't wait to read the next two books! And also, gorgeous illustrations!
Really digging this book so far! Love the concept of fabricated beasts and the gorgeous illustrations!
What made this a 4 star book for me was the narration by Alan Cumming. He was an absolute delight to listen to. I enjoyed all the ideas thrown together in the Clanker-Darwinist machinery/beasties. It was fun to imagine the Leviathan, bats and all. But I felt that Deryn “Barking Spiders” seemed a lot younger than the 15 she is meant to be. She seemed more like 11, 12 at the most.
Overall, it was action-packed and exciting. A fun listen!
Listening to Alan Cumming read while having some steelcut oatmeal with raisins and freeze dried strawberries 🍓
Making waffles while Alan Cumming reads to me 😀
So I recently downloaded this audiobook for #booked2018 - #steampunk. But really it was because it‘s read by Alan Cumming.
Who are your favorite audiobook narrators?
My #JuneTBR contains quite a few rereads, but to be fair, it‘s been over a decade since I last read them (Oh gosh, I feel old). @Jess7 #ReadingResolutions
Historical fiction and steam punk. Fun read and having Alan Cumming as the narrator added more fun.

The idea of a steampunk, alternative history of WW1 intrigued me to pick this last weekend at the library. The story is develops with the Central Powers, known as Clankers, using mechanical war machines, opposed the Allies, known as Darwinists, that fabricate genetic creatures. The concept was neat; but I would say that the story didn't fully grab me enough to pick it fully but i liked it more than a so-so. I would be willing to read the next one.
Rainy morning in San Francisco. I work a half day today before heading to the airport. Not a lot of #freshairandsunshine in store for my today. However this is what awaits me in Inverness. Starting this audiobook on my walk to work based on a recommendation from @Christinak #marchmadness
Meh. I liked it okay, but it never grabbed me, and I don't feel a pressing need to know what happens in the rest of the series. Also, slightly annoyed at Deryn's need to 'curse' 'adorably' every other line. Also, even more annoyed that, of course, she's falling for the other main character. Doesn't seem at all necessary.
I will say that Alan Cumming's reading was gorgeous, of course. I love him to bits.
This awesome YA trilogy is an alternative steampunk version of WWI. AND the audiobooks are read by Alan Cumming! If you are on the fence about audiobooks these are relatively short and can be enjoyed by the whole family. #awesomeaudiobooks #marchintoreading
Not the best but better than so-so. Speaks to the adventure loving 12 year old boy in me, the same one that came back from the cinema one night in the late seventies using the force and breathing heavily as if through a respirator. Loved every minute of it in a nostalgic kind of way.
For today's #seasonsreadings2016....I don't read a lot of steampunk, but I *do* read Scott Westerfeld, so this title immediately came to mind when I looked at today's prompt. 💕
Two #steampunk tales on my TBR, and that time I went steampunk for #Halloween! I have Leviathan on audio with Alan Cumming narrating - looking forward to his voice for hours! #seasonsreadings2016
p.s. Not pictured but an awesome steampunk vampires book is Anno Dracula by Kim Newman!
I'm a moody reader, and I wasn't really in the mood for this, but I read it for book club.
I thought the illustrations were distracting, and as a librarian I think it's harder to sell it in the stacks with illustrations that make the characters seem younger than the story reads.
I also wanted to know more about how it was for a girl masquerading as a boy, but I don't care to hear it from a male. The book was entertaining, but overall meh.
Against all odds I'm enjoying that one of the characters is regularly referred to as a "lady boffin".
