I read this for Bookwyrms Book Club, my newly-minted fantasy book club for kids at the library. It‘s based on “The Reluctant Dragon”, a short story by Kenneth Grahame (which, admittedly, I‘ve never read). It was super sweet — basically “Ferdinand” made mythical, about a cultured & sensitive dragon who would rather read, paint watercolors, play the piano, eat creme brûlée, and put on plays than fight. The kids all loved it! ??

So. Much. Fun. I downloaded this ebook for the kids to listen to in the car but since it was read by Alan Cumming, really it was for me. He was such a delight to listen to, especially when he voiced the delightful dragon (who likes poetry)!

Simply marvelous! Alan Cumming is such a great narrator! It almost felt as though I was inside of a Jim Henson movie at some points! Highly, highly recommend!

This is my 2nd year teaching 3rd grade and doing this book as a readaloud, and I think it will become one of my regulars. My kiddos LOVED this book. Every time I had to stop reading for the day I got a collective, "NOOOOO! ONE MORE CHAPTER!" There is a bit of violence (talk of killing dragons, swords, etc.) but this story, full of heart and humor, is about not judging people (or dragons) before getting to know them, friendship, and being yourself.
