#IndelibleMoments #Grace published in September of 1956 , it rocketed up the bestseller list.When this edition was published in 65 it probably was the bestselling paperback of all time.It was banned , it‘s a book you hid from your parents! It was a film , it was a TV show .I read it as a youngster and definitely hid it from my parents.😂This old paperback in nice shape.

This read led to a very interesting conversation in one of my book clubs this week. So many things to discuss in this book: characters, economics, religion and more. We even discussed zoning laws because of this book. I can imagine that it was quite scandalous for the 50s (when it was first published).

I adore the 1960s show Peyton Place and this has been on my TBR forever. I decided to grab the #audiobook when I saw it was narrated by one of the show‘s cast members. I sped through this 16-hour audiobook. It‘s quite scandalous for the time period and was on banned book lists for awhile. It‘s small-town drama at its finest and imo is a great character study. It‘s a bit different from the show, which is set in the 60s. The book came out in 1956 ⬇️

Wow! I understand why this book was so scandalous but the racism and sexism made parts of the story difficult to enjoy.

“You wonder too much about Peyton Place,” said Mike. It‘s just a town, Allison, like any other town. We have our characters, but so does New York and so does every other town and city.”

I think that‘s what I loved about this book - a typical New England town but the author shows us the secrets behind closed doors and how those secrets weave the people in the town together. I now need to read the sequel.

I think my favorite part of this book is imagining the scandal it caused in the 50‘s. I‘ll bet this is one book EVERYONE wanted to read. This is a pick for me, but just barely. The racism bothered me, and the old men talk I found annoying. Story was fascinating though and I‘d definitely be up for the sequel!

Like @Cinfhen I found a lot of these scandals different than I expected. I‘m giving it a so-so because, while it‘s a pick for unputdownability, it‘s a pan for some of the extra-sordid stuff. Also, I‘ll never get over what happened to poor Cordelia! 😢 #peytonplace My ebook didn‘t have an introduction, but I‘d certainly like to read this one by India Knight.

The copy of this I bought from Thriftbooks came with the sequel. Any of you going to read the sequel??? I think I just might!!

Managed to finish this book today. Not at all what I expected - I always assumed the secrets of Peyton Place were petty & tawdry BUT this was a whole different can of worms!!! I can imagine the scandal this book caused in the 1950s similar to the scandal To Kill A MockingBird must have caused. Fabulous characters who felt like real neighbors you‘d meet walking down Elm Street. Kudos to the author for making this book feel modern 60 years later.

Once I started , I couldn‘t stop. ❤️💫😭. I‘ll say no more till we are all finished.

I‘m really enjoying this book! It‘s a good blend of innocence & evil and just enough spice to keep the pages turning. I didn‘t realize it‘s set in the late 1930‘s it seemed more “modern”. Day 6 of #requiredreadingredo I don't think I was ever banned by my parents from reading a book, which is awesome! So I am going with a book that my grandma told me was seriously banned when she was growing up. After reading it, I totally understand why. A lot was going on in Peyton Place!

In this wonderful vintage book shop today. Found this book and had to have it. It was the first adult book I ever read. I was 11 or 12 at the time. I took the book out of my mums book shelf and hid it in my dolls cot. I read it lying under my bed. I‘ve never seen a copy before so just had to have this one! The shop was wonderful. The smell of old books. Bliss. @MrsMalaprop

“Indian summer is like a woman”. Whether you agree or disagree on how woman is defined, this is certainly a memorable opening to Peyton Place!

I actually was thinking of Metalious‘s description recently— we‘ve been having an Indian summer for a while (finally a good rainy day today)!

After 12 hours of reading, I finished my second book. My family is extremely bored but I loved this book. It seems that small towns gossip about the same sordid things now that they did in the 50's. #24in48

Who among us likes #VintageEditions? A bit of a bragging post as @BookBabe & I have begun the long and pleasurable process of acquiring older books. #FirstEdition "Peyton Place" from 1956 ?!!! One of our local bookstores/binderies has a whole room of vintage books. One series that I want to acquire soon is the entire original Tarzan series first editions. They're asking $40 per volume, but, oh, to own those and live with them ???.

I started "Peyton Place" out of curiosity-- what would have constituted shocking when it came out? Yes there are trigger warning issues in this book in addition to a few (mild by today's standards, IMO) sex scenes; but Metalious also shocked in that she exposed class differences and attitudes in a part of America (New England) that NE'ers were unhappy about her exposing. Very good novel and it'll stay with me for a long time.

Immersed in "Peyton Place". There's all the things here that made it scandalous back in the 1950s: sex, incest, drunkeness, jabs at religion, and and. But such keen and observant writing throughout! Only have done about 4 hours of this #24in48 #readathon thus far but still having a great time trying.

Going to take a break from SPQR (p. 71) for Peyton Place. Did not plan ahead for snacks but coffee is my current "snack"! #24in48

What an opening line...."Indian Summer is like a woman. Ripe, hotly passionate, but fickle, she comes and goes as she pleases so that one is never sure whether she will come at all, nor for how long she'll stay.

You know how all the promos for Grey's Anatomy involve an explosion, a big emergency, BIG DRAMA every week? This is that in an old-school potboiler with sex, scandal, deceit, incest, suicide, an illegal abortion, and...it's not Proust but it's a hella compelling story and pretty well written.

So this is the physical pile which is literally "books on the nightstand," but there's also a larger virtual "pile" on my Kindle. Don't judge me for the Debbie Macomber; sometimes I like to see what all the fuss is about, and it was a quarter at a yard sale. #TBR Tuesday.

Continuing my retro kick by listening to this one. I was born too late to have read it when it was scandalizing the world, but I'm very curious about what constituted "racy" in 1956.

TBT - I read them while staying with my grandmother when I was about 12. These are the actual copies ❤️ The cover prices are 75 and 60 cents :)

A well read copy with so many security tags that I wondered if people in Indiana skip the checkout line altogether.

Only on chapter two of Peyton Place and I'm already in awe of Grace Metalious's deceptively simple writing style and skill for choosing just the right word. #writinggoals #newenglandlit #americanclassic
